Hope you have a great Christmas too reded78.
Let you know I get on. Think the off piste introduction will be good. Hopefully I'll get to try a little bit next week.

I saw a couple of workmen lifting something big and heavy out of one of the grand Mott cable cars this morning, after which they closed it up. Also saw a couple of piste bashers going up the grand motte piste. Don't know if that means anything?
From the grand huite chair you could see where the snow has folded up and isn't really stuck to the mountain, if that makes sense.
Great day's skiing though, not a cloud in the sky and the snow held firm all day despite it being quite warm

It's been a glorious few days here in Tignes. Snow condition is deteriorating and we could do with some flakes soon. Forecast is looking good for some more snow tomorrow and into the weekend. Should make for a great week for anyone planning on getting here for the new year!

cavershamlad, Amen to that. Could definitely do with more snow to fill in some of the gaps and open up some more off piste for those who are that way inclined. Having said that though the pistes are in pretty good nick and the weather is beautiful.

stewart woodward, Mostly I would agree with you. Certainly I have had a very good day and could ski everywhere I wanted to. However there are definitely a few places with grass showing eg at the top of the cut-out from Trolles that takes you down towards Paquis and Chaudanes. And at the left hand side of Bluets (as you go down) there is a completely bare strip about five metres wide running along for a hundred metres or more right next to the piste. Like I say, nothing to give you a bad day but a sign that some more snow would still be a good thing.

Same here, the snow is great but there are patches appearing all over Tignes and Val. I'm sure tomorrows dusting will make good of it all. I've not been on Fontaine Frois today but in my experience that's one run that seems to suffer the most... anyone got info' on it's condition?

Tricky day. When the sun occasionally broke through it was lovely but that wasn't very often. It's been snowing pretty much all day, sometimes quite heavy but mostly light stuff. Around 3 pm the wind got up and it was pretty strong off the top of Palafour. The best part of the day was a few runs up and down Grand Pre around 1130-1230, followed by a full descent of Orange in a white out that was a bit less pleasant.

Sitting in the apartment in Le Lac watching the snow ploughs doing their thing only to have the road completely covered with snow within 15 minutes. I guess this morning will be spent more in the cafes than on the slopes - who knows what the afternoon will bring.

Loads more snow overnight. Hope there are a few more lifts and pistes open today. Yesterday Chaudannes stayed open all day but the runs down to Brev and Boisses were closed due to avalanche risk. Made Bluets a touch crowded. The section between Boisses and Brev was lovely, but oh, the Brevieres chair is slooooow.

Still snowing this morning, the view from Le Lac is very chocolate box cover. Can't wait to hit as many slopes as possible for our last day ...... Tignes as always delivered one of the best ski weeks!

32 - 50 cm of new snow on top of the 20cm we had the day before.
Blasting started at 4.30am to ensure the road from Lac to Boissses was open.
Avalanche risk just gone to 5/5.

A happy new year to all from Tignes.
The snowfalls over the last few days delayed many peopes transfer to resort yesterday with the roads to Bourg, and beyond, closed due to a number of avalanches. The local paper is reporting a car & snowplough being buired by one avalanche but thankfully all the occupants were ok.
Quote: |
Bogusman, Probably about a third of the area was open with no links to Val D'Isere |
When the avalanche risk is high (yesterday 5/5) they 'control' where people can ski by closing lifts which give access to high risk areas. This morning they have been blasting lots to make areas safe so hopefully the links will open. Avalanche risk is still 5/5 !

Just back - last week was brilliant, haven't been back to Tignes since 2000. But am I the only one to be somewhat surprised by how they maintain the slopes ? Not complaining, you understand, but at least last week, they never bashed the reds at all, and often runs got chopped up so much during the day that it led to some challenging surfaces for those expecting blue & green...... Anyone else smile at the top of Borsat? About 100m of fairly narrow, reasonably steep slope, notionally with green poles, but after being skied to buggery deserved red.
Of course all this new snow means that this brave effort will be gone. Hope it returns.....

Terrific day on too little sleep. Biggest challenge of the day was the way the new snow formed moguls anywhere there was a decent amount of traffic and believe me some places had a lot of traffic. But the moguls were soft and nobody seemed too bothered. Best time was between about 1 and 3 when the slopes emptied a bit and you could play with the moguls properly.

with so much snow that's fairly common - in our area (not nearly as gnarly as tignes) we'd expect some parts to get very chopped up, with so much new snow, and when it's very snowy they can't piste them all late enough into the night to provide pisted slopes even early in the morning. NO pisteing is ever done during the day - it's allowed in some places, I think, but I'm happy to know I'm not going go encounter a piste basher in murky visibility on an open slope.

Yebbut these slopes were like this after four days of bright sunshine, they just didn't seem to touch some at all. Not complaining, you understand, probably just having a little whinge about their piste labelling and the effect it has on those who depend on it. I fell in love with the natural half pipe of Santons, I realise that can't be pisted so isn't the same thing, but it is labled as blue which meant that you had to get there really early to get anything like a clear run.

Ham, I like the alpine equivalent of a 'crop circle' down on the lake there. Earth art or alien message?

Sadly the new snow has covered up the art work. Maybe there is another aspirant artist in Tignes.....
Last day today. Weather looks promising. The pisteurs will have had more time to work with the new snow so hopefully a bit less mogulled on piste - for a while at least. Wonder how much we can do between now and 2 pm?
