Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Mind you valley floor to our apartment in Petit Chatel is not much fun after a long ride, and the last 100m has two sections of 10%+!

@DJL, My son cycled up the Grand St Bernard Pass, all along the Rhone valley to Monthly, up the Pas de Morgins but phoned his partner for a lift up the last 1km to our apartment up the hill in La Chapelle!

Have I read somewhere that the precipitation in mm shown on the ensembles actually (in the right temps) produces way more snow depth? Or did I dream it?

@franga, I always use sports2000. It’s right across the road from the main lifts and you can leave you stuff there overnight in a warm room so no need to schlep about in ski boots.

There was a small top up last night, maybe 5cms in Les Gets. Been out first lifts this morning and it was so much better albeit hellish busy and still quite a few pistes lacking enough snow to be pisted. Rain came in again at 12:00.

Hopefully heading to Avoriaz tomorrow.

I booked mine through Alpinresorts with a nice discount and used Jordan Sports, just opposite the Apres Bar. discount code ALPISKI. You can also use their heated store room under the shop.

Was up on Ardent gondola from 0920 this morning. 20 min queue to get on. I *know* it's a peak week but a flow rate of 2200/hr (although app says 2400/hr, weird) feels below par these days... Good candidate for an upgrade.

Snow line was certainly around the top of Lindarets level and people had fanned out and Prolays had no queue once we got up at 0945. Headed up Stade (5 min queue), the T-bar (no queue) and then Fornet. Nice snow off-piste for a couple of hundred metres of fun and fresh turns but soon got heavy and was largely tracked out. Piste itself was packed with a few accidents en route. Best avoided me thinks but hopefully with some more fresh and less crowds that bowl will start to offer more.

Back over on the Lindarets side, the new snow hadn't really made much difference unfortunately - still patchy in places. Soft chop all the way down to the parking - personally I love it, as long as you have some charging gear strapped to your feet!

@under a new name, Fair enough. I was wondering what sort of maths one might go through Puzzled . There has to be a minimum increase of n PAX/hr vs. cost to justify any further "refreshment". It then got me thinking what margins the PdS makes per year and how this is spent/re-invested...?

One thing I would say, is that over the recent 7-10 days, it seems clear to me they've worked pretty hard to keep people skiing. Our hard-earned €s are going somewhere...

Ski Fun Shop, Michaud Sports, Berthet Sports and Jordan Sports have all given my family good service, all nice and convenient for the Chavannes lift.
The only shop we have had a problem with was Intersport who wanted to charge extra for the overnight storage, they did change their minds after a little discussion.

@fatmansan, we don’t go at peak (ie xmas/NY/half term) but on and off through the rest of the season. I can’t really recall a queue at Ardent, so I guess the “business case” would include whether it’s worth spending money on a lift that only really gets busy two or three weeks a year.

Plus maybe it kind of acts as a filter to slow the flow of folk onto the rest of the lift system?

@andy from embsay, I have exactly the same experience as you. We've never skied peak weeks before (I'm only doing it now because we've moved here full time and have family over) and I've rarely had to queue at Ardent, so I get it. With time to kill whilst waiting, I just started geeking out on flow rates and 2200/hr these days seems low, that's all (there are a number of chairs higher up that are 3000/hr, for example). And then I started thinking about investment and where €€€ should/would be spent.

It's at the edges where things make a difference. Peak weeks are when impressions / memories are made for many, and so optimising to ensure they have the best experience possible would seem to make sense in the longer term for the good of the entire area. Such a capital investment would be on a multi-year accrual basis anyway I'd assume and so there's always a way to make the biz case fit...

Which social media accounts are worth following for the PDS area. Heading out in a couple of weeks and am one of those that likes to be prepared and research as much as I can!

On Morzine hire shops, we are planning on skiiing mainly Avoriaz and looking to to use slider/Caribou 2 for its location and storage but any recommendations/advice welcome. Staying next door to the casino supermarket.

Collecting ski passes... Through my unfamiliarity with PdS, I've arranged to collect our passes in LG, when in fact, almost anywhere would have been more convenient. Would anyone know if ANY ticket machine will spit them out? Or will I have to go there? Ta.

EDIT:

From my receipt...

"You can collect your hands-free card 24h/24 from our pick-up box located in front of the main cash desk of Chavannes, or from our tickets machine located in the resort**.
For that you just have to scan the QR code above.

You can also go to one of our different cash desks by presenting this order receipt."

** Do Snowheads think this extends to anywhere in PdS? Or just in Les Gets? Ta

It's not world-ending either way, of course.

@Charliegolf, If you are staying at Encrenaz, there was a small automated ticket machine at the bottom of the chairlift on that side. No idea if you can pick up tickets there but worth asking by email. If there is snow you could always blag your way on that lift and ski down to the mt chery ticket office that will surely suit you out.

Yesterday (30th) was the worst days skiing I have ever had! The powder that lured us out seemed to not have been pisted at all, add in huge crowds and drizzle starting at 11, we ended early for the first time ever!!

The heavy rain overnight seems to have fallen up to the very summit and more than reversed all of that fresh snow, so we may not even bother skiing today. At least we had 2 good days driving over to verbier earlier in the week

Looking more wintry after next weekend, at least from mid-mountain upwards.

Looks like LG is closed until further notice, the current warmth probably prevents them even attempting to scrape up snow onto a few pistes, with no overnight freeze until next weekend.

Do most of the crowds disappear after this weekend, @polo? Hoping for quieter pistes next weekend, albeit up high.

Oh, normally I would agree with you, but when most runs have large bare patches and a thin icy pack underneath, the initial skiers push the power into heavy mougles and re-expose the poor quality piste below. By 9:30am the conditions were horrible again. Especially bad for beginners, I saw a huge number of accidents on the busy blues.

@andy from embsay, yeah for sure, school is back on the 3rd, and although the Swiss tend to have big numbers here the first week of Jan I expect many will head home early.

Having said that any weekend can be busy these days, especially with fresh snow. Your best chance for a quiet weekend would be one where it’s cold and stormy……bliss
