Normal new years day today with very quiet slopes until mid morning.
The pistes are in great shape and some of the offpiste has transformed a little giving some decent runs but you have to be careful of rocks. Most of the itenary routes are not open due to lack of snow but can be skied with caution. AV risk is currently 2/5
Hopeful some snow Monday evening
Happy New year

Small amount of snow overnight and first thing this morning to refresh the pistes and significantly improve the off piste.
Lots of people seemed to be enjoying the off piste but I didn't venture there.
The clouds broke for about 1hr this morning before descending again later. The afternoon was much better and hopefully tomorrow will be better still.
The crowds seem to have gone back to work and the resort is significantly quieter.

The Offpiste was mostly poor.... A light covering of mostly frozen crud. A few patches where it has accumulated nicely. The poor light didn't help.

Well there is weather news! Looks like I may be arriving in snow early next week. The mild benign weather should continue until Saturday as Tignes sits in slack high pressure (all the grotty weather will be over the UK), it will then become unsettled and cooler on Sunday, this cooling will continue into Monday as winter returns above 1400m. Still not the deep cold though. As ever with unsettled weather things may change!
Today will continue as it is now, nice,, but a thin veil of high cloud should start moving in this afternoon. Tomorrow will be mild again with variable amounts of cloud depending on how far the weather to the North comes south, it may be sunny periods or a thicker veil of high cloud. Look out of the window! Friday, glorious and mild, blues skies and sunshine. Saturday looks good as well but the weather is on the way and timings are not precise yet, it may cloud over in the afternoon or it may wait till after dark. Sunday will be a bit cooler and the wind will pick up in the afternoon, particularly at altitude. There will be a mix of snow showers, sunny periods and maybe some longer spells of persistent cloud in the morning. The snow will start to get a bit sleety below the Dam. Monday will be snowy, windy and cold, perhaps a lot of high lifts closed, but confidence in this forecast is not high. The rest of the week currently looks unsettled. Maybe 10-20 cm on Sunday and 15-25 on Monday which would be just about perfect for getting the season going again without causing havoc.

It's been mentioned on this thread previously, but going to put a shout out to La Queue de Cochon in Le Lavachet.
We ate there last Easter and had a great meal. We visited twice over the Christmas Week, once for a couple of drinks during happy hour. For anyone interested, €5 for a pint of Asahi, G&T, Aperol Spritz, Rosé Prosecco and possibly a couple of other drinks. Plus the bonus of some cured sausage and pretzels.
Last Friday we ate there on our last evening. We were tucked away upstairs in a corner which was perfect as we had the dog. A lovely meal. It's €42 for 2 courses which for the quality of ingredients and taste is a bargain.
I'll definitely be back a lot during April when i'll be in the resort for most of the month.

Hi,
Managed to organise a trip to Tignes last week of Jan/ first week of Feb. Very excited now, as it is a really good group, and my wife is a much better skiier now so she should be able to explore quite a bit.
We are staying in an apartment opposite the Chardonnet lift and I just wondered if it ever run? She is totally fine on Pomma's and drag lifts (even steep ones with turns), and it would be a nice way some days to go up and over to Palafour (jumping off half way up), or to get over to Val Claret.
My wife has ski school most mornings so think that it won't be a massive issue as I think we have to walk into le lac as the meet time is before lifts open, and I am happy to jump on a bus to get over to Val Claret.
Also on that note I can't find lift opening times anywhere online for some reason, what time is first life and what time is last lift.
|
|
|
|
|
|
@dorhar, i'd recommend downloading the Tignes app on your phone. That will show you what lifts are open and what times etc.
Unfortunately the Chardonnet lift doesn't show as open or closed, but it certainly wasn't running over Christmas. I don't know the resort well enough to say how often it does or doesn't open.
Most lifts seem to run 0900-1630 or 0900-1645, and again, that info is on their app.

Thanks, have the app but couldn't find first lift/ last lift times (I know condition dependent etc.). Will keep having a look I am probably doing my usual thing of looking straight at it but not seeing it.

@dorhar, always been open when I have been there . Maybe shut to save energy ?

According to the app it says Chardonnet is out of action as opposed to closed. Wasn't operating at Xmas and New Year as others have said

You know it makes sense.

@dorhar, if you open the interactive map, and then click the button to show lifts, you can then click on individual lifts which will tell you their opening hours.

Thanks all super helpful. Feel like they have overcomplicated the app as most lifts seem to be 9-4:30, could have just done what they used to do on the maps with a little thing in the bottom corner giving general times etc.
Think the Chardonnet will be closed, but don't think that will be an issue as I promised to walk with my wife to ski school in the morning, can get a coffee and croissant on the way as there is a Carrefour.

@dorhar, If you go here:
https://bulletin.lumiplan.pro/bulletin.php?station=tignes®ion=alpes&pays=france&lang=fr
You will see all the lift openings for the current day (gentle hint there’s lots of handy links on Page 1 of this thread). This is the system that drives all the electronic boards around resort and is as close to live as you can get.
As for Chardonnet, it may be lack of snow, I see the Almes chair is not showing as well together with pistes Bergerie and Joubarbe showing as closed. They are both normally open, especially as someone who wields a lot of power in Tignes has properties which rely on them to be ski in ski out .

@dorhar,
Chardonnet lift is currently closed. Depending where you are staying it's a gentle slide down to the ski school meeting places in Lac or a 5 minute walk.
Sorry but Carrefour do not sell coffee but there are lots of cafés in Lac where you can get a coffee and croissant.

@dorhar, Theres a wee bakery inside the Palafour building, door is basically next to the Sherpa Supermarket - a lot of the ESF guys get their coffee and cake their before lessons (hence its ideal pre your wifes lessons).

Amazing thanks, I should have not made a joke about going to Carrefour and asked where a good Boloungarie/ bakery is on the way to the ski school, for some reason my brain forgets I am going to France when I go Skiing.
When I have looked at booking group lessons can only seem to find Evolution 2 for Adult group lessons from the 29th so a bit of a walk but lots of chances to get breakfast/ lunch snacks. Again, I am probably doing something wrong so will have another go at trying to find ski schools.
I really love this forum I have always got really good friendly advice, and not been trolled (yet).

@dorhar,
Where are you staying? All the ski schools meet in the same area so anywhere in the Palafour block will be 5 minutes.

My plans were to do an ‘off piste’ course with Oxygene this coming week but it’s on hold due to lack of participants. There seems to be semi significant snow coming. That will put off piste skiing on the back burner for the time being due to avalanche risk I guess? I’m thinking I’ll just shell out for a guide for a couple of mornings when the time is appropriate. Any other suggestions? I think ESF may have something.

@sbooker, there will be good off piste skiing immediately following the storm (and during but you want trees which Tignes is lacking in) you will just need slopes with a mellow gradient that aren't threatened by higher/steeper slopes. Going with the guide before the freezing rises and makes everything heavy (Wednesday?) would be what I would want to do

We found a GoPro near the playground by the Lac and so handed it into the guy at the bottom of the Toviere lift. So if you hear of anyone looking, let them know.

I have (as always) become obsessed with Snow Forecasts and the Weather thread for Tignes....especially after the mild rainy weather.
Not only do different models produce wildly different results - but the same model has been changing almost hourly.
Currently for 6 days:
Bergfex..........119cm
Wepowder.......86cm
SCGN.............44cm
Snowforecast..33cm

Had a quick coffee with a couple of offpiste guides i know this morning. Their comments on popular off piste routes they have skied this week:
Good. Chardonnay bowl, Familiar, tour de Charvet.
Sketchy, pisteurs couloir
Next week should be better still with new snow
