There is a tale of woe in the Telegraph by a family whose son tested positive a few days after arriving in Obergurgl.
Here is an extract:
Drivers in hazmat suits arrived at 7pm to transfer us in an old ambulance with bare metal walls. It was minus 5C or so outside, with no heat in the vehicle — they said the cold was better for the Covid patient! — so my kids were scared and freezing by the time we arrived. [near Innsbruck]
They were treating us like we had Ebola and that drive set the tone.
We arrived at the Clubhotel Goetzen/Edelweiss Hotel, a former three-star hotel being used by the Government to house people with Covid. The radiators in the room were cold and we couldn’t warm up. We had one duvet each and shivered through the night, fully clothed, keeping ourselves warm with heat from the stove in the kitchenette.

@BoardieK, What did they expect the 'walls' of the ambulance to be lined in one wonders...?
As for the quarantine hotel I thought for a lovely moment they meant the Edelweiss in Obgergurgl, in which I would happily be confined for the rest of my days, but in fact it seems like this place.

Still, it's hardly 'Colditz'. I would have expected more resilience and stiffer upper lips from Telegraph readers

not sure if its that one or not but I suppose that unless you are locked in your room (which I had assumed you would be) it could be ok

A little more to whet your appetite:
"Lunch one day was fried cheese, dinner last night a plateful of deep-fried mushrooms, breakfast is rolls and jam. There’s not a single plate, glass or cup in the kitchenette — we have to drink out of the tap".
They also state that this place (the hotel presumably) is filling up with English people and is dreading any more of them testing positive.

For anyone needing a 48 hour PCR done for going or coming home, as I said before ExpressTest at Heathrow (T4 old Long Stay carpark) has a drive in test centre which was dead easy to find and use yesterday, I was in and out of there within about 15 mins. I could have done the T2 arrivals walk in but I thought the queue would be big for that. Better to collect your vehicle then go to wherever for the test I think.
From swab taken to certificate in my hand was 28 hours. They say next day by 10pm so it was within that by about 3.5 hours. Might be handy for anyone living near Heathrow.

Yes when I looked up about the costs involved the other week it just said that each Land is different and it’s free in Vienna!

I bet they didn’t turn the radiator on.
One duvet each sounds standard on Austrian twin beds. How many duvets each were they expecting?
Written for clicks I think!

Ok I’ve read it now, thanks @DidierCouch,
To be fair if you’re taking kids away with you it’s your responsibility to find out what happens if one tests positive, you’re their caregiver. It’s more likely with kids on the balance of probabilities just because they are kids, and they do what kids do.
It was free and they had a refund for their hotel in Obergurgl including the ski hire!
Well I reckon they got off lightly myself.

Tirol also appears to be free from the article.
I expected it to be a Ninja pass horror story but the kids were younger (9). Seemed to be a self-administered test.

It’s not a bad set up really, my main concern was if it was going to cost a couple of grand just to stay in the whole time.

I'd better not copy the entire article, don't want to get the forum in trouble. I've just subscribed for the first time ever (3 months for a £) because we are away in the motorhome for 2 months. Tip; you can read most articles by stopping the page from loading the moment it shows!
However; the dad is a 51 year old city trader and it was the first ski trip for their 9 year old triplets. They were staying at the Bergwelt Hotel who have been fantastic organising ski pass and lesson refunds as well as their room. The hotel also offered them a bigger apartment to be more comfortable in but once the authorities got involved it all went downhill.
They have been able to order in food deliveries and even an electric heater as the radiators don't get hot (nor the water), hoping to leave on 28th. The infected son is in the bedroom, the other four in the (estimate from photo 18x10) common room. But hey, they do have a balcony (and a guard) and the accommodation is free!

I agree. Couldn’t see the equivalent in the UK being cost-free, if it exists at all. Hotel in Obergurgl behaved extremely decently, it seems like.

I can imagine it being a bit stressful with three 9 year olds
I think it’s something to be considered carefully if you are intending travelling with family/youngsters.
It’s a lot easier if it’s just you to worry about (to a degree depending on how ill you get) I got ill in Chamonix once with God knows what and that was very hard work on my own.

Yes very much so, they were under no obligation to refund any of their money. I find they (people with Austrian B&Bs/hotels) are like that though, I’ve not met any stingy ones so far, they’ve often surprised me with their generosity.

The likelihood of ending up in this situation is one of the factors that made up our decision not to go skiing at Christmas. We’re very much worse case scenario type planners. The cost and hassle of pcrs for us isn’t really a big deal - it is what it is. However the ramifications of what happens if one of us tests positive are too great. We won’t be going anywhere that has PCR testing as a requirement - so I suspect we’re stuck here for quite some time.

@bambionskiis, it’s understandable. I’m glad I went and it was straightforward as long as you’re organised but the whole time you can sort of feel this background stress coming off people. The what ifs, etc.
Like I said before it would be better if they said the rules are x for 3 weeks then they might change. Then everyone knows where they are for the next few weeks.
Also if people don’t go because of the chances of quarantine would it make it more likely that restrictions would be eased? After all, it gets expensive not having a busy tourist sector.

Yes I agree, after all, these people on FB etc that say ‘oh get someone negative to do the test to get home’, the only purpose it serves is to make their lives easier and to hell with anyone else. If you’re not prepared to follow the rules do us all a favour and don’t go.

This has to be the most stressful Xmas morning ever! New 48hrs from yesterday PCRs came through with 3/6 errors- name, DoB, & Passport numbers incorrect! Lab shut but thankfully finally got a person to email back who sorted it out. Poor sod must be run off his feet if that’s normal error rate!
Anyway that’s all sorted. Anyone landed in Austria with teenagers so far today?
Good news is we managed to change tomorrow’s Munich Lufthansa flights to April for just extra £6 each.

No need to get someone negative to do the test if that’s your goal. Just wave the swab in the air rather than in your nose!

Is it any wonder the UK has got some of the worst rates for covid infection and death? I’m pretty glad to be in Austria where people are inclined to go along with the rules for the greater good rather than UK where everybody is looking for the exception that means they can consider themselves special and carry on regardless.

@andybomb1, this forum and other social media sites have soon revealed who they are though!
It is still the minority I think…..
Trying to circumnavigate rules just unfortunately prolongs the aggro for everyone else and makes it more likely that more strict regulations come in. But hey, as long as they got their holiday.

@andybomb1, didn’t Austria recently have lockdown due to the smallest % of eligible adult vaccinations in Europe?

@jirac18, yes, Austria had a lockdown. No, they were never bottom of the pile in Europe. OWID suggests they have now overtaken the UK for number of fully vaccinated adults.

@franga, I learnt from my role as a marshal at the local vax centre that those wearing sunflower lanyards were exempt from wearing a mask. I am afraid I don’t know any other significance of the sunflower lanyards, and maybe I should. I soon learnt about the masks/lanyards as they were rather aggressively shoved in my face when I mentioned the possibility of a mask being worn, so always looked out for them.
|
|
|
|
|
|
Sunflower lanyards (hidden disability) have been around since before CoVID, but have been hijacked by some who would rather not wear a mask.
Not that I think masks do much good in practice - whilst they may work in a lab, the way they are worn in the real world leaves me in no doubt that they don’t work as intended (as also seen by the lack of differential rates in the 4 nations when the rules were different).
We’re no worse in the U.K. though - the Austrians are crap at wearing their FFP2 masks too, not being tight around the nose and slipping off all the time. But masks are something that can be easily seen, and governments needed to be seen to be doing something (especially something that they didn’t have to pay for).
But they’re the rules, so I wear one (mask, not lanyard).
