under a new name,
No, skied on Sunday.
Yesterday intended to have a rando but there is nothing with any snow that I havn't been up twice already. Instead walked up, on foot, to the Point de la Croix (the one we did a few years ago on skis). The top is 1850m, no snow, nothing. Truly awful but a nice summer walk.
Came home and had a looooooooong lunch in the Tyrolien with the usual suspects.

zzz, excellent! Feels not a little like '89 and '90 to me, non?

under a new name,
It feels much like that, possibly worse, but saved to a certain extent by the cannons. Rumour has it though that the resevoirs are now dry!
It looks like we are ten days away from any significant snowfall, and even then there is a ? over the freezing level, but that's a long way away.
What is for sure it will be a very poor season for ski de randonée, with the base non existant and the ground now warm, any snow that falls will surely disappear swiftly.
But hey ho, the weathers great and there's always another year.

Just come across these guys on youtube. They upload a weather and piste report from Morzine/Les Gets pretty much every day.
(The date on the link says 7th Jan. Ignore that.... that was 7th Feb)

Hi just about to book a hotel Les Lans in Les Prodains. Am i thinking right that it is to the right of Avoriaz lower down and you can get a lift straight up to the top. I seem to remember sking down a bit to far once and having to cross the road to go back up to avoriaz (rather than walk back up the slope to the chair.
If i am right does any one know if this lift operates into the night so we could use the bars up there or are ther a few bars in Les Prodains?
Thanks for the help. We are looking to book for 26th March

Les prodains is at the bottom where the big cable car goes up Into avoriaz. I looked at booking for there but it seemed an only French kind of place. Very easy access tomavoriaz but not sure what time it is open until. Take your skis and a torch!

Morzine Weather has just released a sunrise to sunset exploration of the skiing conditions in the Portes Du Soleil. There is some stunning shots of the sun coming up and going down over the alps. The snow conditions aren't looking all that bad either!

Rick&powder, thanks for the heads up on that. I do remember the runs being steep.
We are being tempted by Brides les Bains/meribel at the mo thou. Its a tough call, i have skied in Avoriaz quite a few times now and know the area abit better than a bit so I know it will be good, but I/we do like the look of it over there. Any one on here have any reasons why not to go there!
cheers

Hi bigtoe
We are locals to Prodains, quite close to Les Lans, which I've heard is a good hotel.
If you do choose to go to Prodains I'd also look at two good hotels even closer to the cable car, Les Prodanis and Kinkerne.
There is a bar with pool table and table football, pinball, pizzas etc immediately left of the cable car. It is in a hotel/hostel which tends to be used by younger groups. I'm guessing that it might get livelier that the more traditional hotel bars.
If you want to go up to Avoriaz for the night life, the latest times for the cable are advertised as
Mon-Thurs 9pm
Fri-Sat midnight
Sun 10pm
Having said all of that, Meribel is great fun too, though the whole 3 valleys area can be very expensive if you're not careful - be very very careful eating/drinking in Courchevel. The contrast across 3V is huge, one day we had pasta and wine for 15 euros, the next day pizza and beer for 33!
Looks like some fresh snow coming at last, so good luck wherever you go.

Maybe small sprinkles of snow on a daily basis all week? According to meteosuisse.ch!!! Fingers well and truly crossed after negotiating my three six year old beginners down Planachaux today!!!!

Just got back last night after 5 days in the PdS and had a fantastic time and boarded every day in glorious sunshine on excellent pistes. Stayed in chatel and the local skiing was pretty poor and chatel had 2-3 runs open with grass on either side, all very slushy/icy and plenty of mud and grass on pistes with stones chipping away at the board. All the links to the swiss side and super chatel closed. Super chatel had a couple of long reds open with great snow (man made but still very boardable) but not enough to keep you going for more than an hour or so. Again all links closed to swiss side.
We drove to pre le joux and the whole atmosphere changed. Everything looks white and it felt like a proper ski holiday. We skied all round that area and also avoriaz. We spent 3-4 days there and skiied all day. Ok, there was no off piste, some runs had icy patches under the snow but around 70% of the area was perfectly skiable and the pistes were in great shape. In fact i would say for on piste skiing it was as good as any other holiday I have had in ten years. Nothing off piste but a great time was had by us all.
It is a bit icy underfoot before 9.30 am and tended to get sa bit tricky after 4pm on the home runs, i found it quite easy but some of the less confident guys did get a bit anxious and cautious at these times.
If you are heading out you will have a fantastic time i promise you.

It is supposed to snow, but I fear just enough to hide but not cover the rocks. I skied to lunch today and boy was it shite. It's busy now, but not as busy as usual for Feb hols. I skied from Morzine to Linderets via Super Morzine. Some of the pistes on Super M' are now closed and what is open is hanging on by a thread. Without significant snowfall that area will surely close soon. The pistes in Linderets that I skied are largely artificial snow interspersed with large icy patches; not too many rocks however. Anything between the pistes has become too thin to ski now.
I really feel for those coming out for half term, you'll ski but it will not be pretty. Many of the lower local resorts are closing meaning busing to Avoriaz to add to the crowds. Fortunately I suspect many French tourists will cancel due to lack of snow. However it will still be busy.
Good luck.

FlyingStantoni,
I can believe it. To be honest though I'll just stay clear of the mountain until things improve.
On that note, the top of Nantaux (2000m) seems to have had a DUSTING of snow. It still looks green though.

zzz, Where's the snow..........DUSTING on Nantaux - could be a bit of frost! 6degrees in town this morning!
Bang goes our rando in a bit of fresh stuff!
Agree with zzz, not as busy as usual for a "Paris" holiday week......not even a queue at Proclou....
Think it could all change next week UK, Paris other Europeans are off!!
Everything crossed for some snow at the weekend..
