Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Does anyone have any advice for this wkend?

There are 4 of us planning on coming over on Fri evening and staying to Sun evening(from Co. Antrim). 2 of us are keen to get a couple of off-piste lessons if poss, the other 2 have only 1 week skiing so need plenty of blues and reds and maybe a bit of instruction too. I skied Glenshee a few times about 15 or 20 years ago, but that's the total of my knowledge! Is there anywhere we should avoid this weekend for any reason, and is there anywhere that would suit us more than others? Accommodation tips are welcome too.

Thanks guys.

moffatross, It was a cornice collapse/Avalanche I was there on Monday afternoon and it was just being cleared at that time. prior to that the run onto which it fell had been closed. The lift was running but the only piste available was immediately adjacent to the tow.

Thanks icyjock & DaveMcSki, I can't recall seeing avalanche debris so close to a ski lift & piste in Scotland before.

I was at Glencoe on Saturday and there was loads of snow and just as many people making the most of it. Almost unbelievably, we're still mid season with two months of spring skiing to go Very Happy

Early morning haze / high level cloud quickly burnt back to give unbroken sunshine for much of the day at Glenshee. Snow starting firm, quickly loosening up on Carn Aosda and Butchart's, the steep line by the T-bar on Carn Aosda great mid to late morning. Stayed over at Meall Odhar for much of the afternoon, snow was just skiing beautifully there, esp skiers right of the T-bar on the original Meall Odhar run.

^Meall Odhar was the pick of the day, Monday.

^Meall Odhar 'T-bar'. This is where it all begun in 1957 and on a day like Monday it's easy to see why.

^Going up the world, skier on the Carn Aosda T-bar.

That looks quite substantial from your pic, looks like the remaining part could go also.

There had definitely been a wee avalanche at the bottom of Rannoch Glades, just above Mug's Alley at Glencoe. I took a photo on Sunday & I'll try & load it on the computer today or tomorrow.

I've just heard from Cairngorm again, and they are definitely planning to run lifts over the May bank holiday weekend if there's enough snow. Hopefully my comments about people being able to make plans helped! So ............................

I am deffo planning on the trip, I've asked Admin if he wants to make it an official snowheads bash/meet whatever. CALLING ALL SNOWHEADS - plan a 3 day trip to Cairngorm as a bank holiday treat!  You know it makes sense.
You know it makes sense.
It was a beautiful day at Cairngorm today but conditions were very hard and icy on nearly all runs. The top of the Ciste Gully and White Lady are icy but still smooth with nice clean moguls (as usual) towards the bottom, but Aonach Bowl and Ryvoan (accessable via a West Wall traverse) were full of lumpy ice. M1 was the only red I didn't ski but I expect conditions would be similar to Lady but without the moguls.

The Fiacall and Cas runs were also icy with a reasonable amount of frozen crud in places. The M2, however was pretty soft at the top but firmed up towards the top of Over Yonder.

On top, the Ciste Bowl and Fairway are firm but softening and are by far in the best condition of the runs I skied. On the downside, the tow queues were very long due to kids skiing lessons but dropping onto the M2 or Ciste Gully gave access to the West Wall Poma which was very quiet.

Speaking of the West Wall, the icy conditions make it very difficult to ski with the cross tracks from the Ciste Gully to the West Wall Poma.

Hard work but a lovely day on the mountain. If the temperature rises another 2 or 3 degrees we will have some excellent spring snow!

The sun continued to beat down on Tuesday and it should do again on Wednesday, but becoming unsettled through Thursday. Despite feeling warm in the Sun, snow on aspects not directly in the sun is staying very firm to hard packed across the areas. At the Lecht on Tuesday and all runs have a fantastic full fence depth of cover with the fences buried in parts on the mainside and the depth and extent of snow cover on the Buzzard side is phenomenal.

On the main side the snow was hardest towards the Tomintoul end and loosest towards the Cock Bridge end. Eagle runs hade a nice layer of loose granular snow on a hard base, Grouse was hard but grippy, but the Snowy Owl was slicker, esp the steep pitch that was getting scrapped.

Undoubted pick of the day was the Buzzard which had been basking in the sun, holding a high traverse a good distance out North from the top of the tow brings you into a shallow bowl which has a slightly South of West aspect at one side and this had the sweetest snow of all. A good distance out from the tow, very few old tracks thus smooth silky soft snow on a firm base giving great off-piste turns and with a firm base under it, it was not cutting up.

^A grouse watches the action from a snow fence on the Grouse run.

^Base Lodge and nursery slope magic carpet - ideal set up for learning.

^Buzzard Poma, best snow on Tuesday here.

A great bluebird day at Glenshee today. Rock hard in the morning but softened up in the afternoon, and having the guy in the hire shop do my edges (for a mighty £3) really helped Cool

I tried doing a line on the black face up on Glas Maol. It's a lot steeper when you're stood up at the top of it, but I got down after deliberating for a long time. One to revisit with some fresh and forgiving snow on the top!

Here's a slightly dubious phone photo taken from the Coire Fionn Poma looking towards Glas Maol

Yup, it's looking more and more like May skiing: 100,000th Skier at CairnGorm As Scottish Area Looks To Ski In To May which, if I'm not mistaken, will be the 6th consecutive month of lift served snowsports on Cairngorm this season! Very Happy

I think i'm gonna head up to Cairngorm next week, probably thursday. It'll be the first time i've skied there but will mean i'll have skied all the scottish ski centres in 1 season after skiing the Lecht Last week for the first time

It's been an awesome season for me. First time skiing in the alps in Soll and the best season in Scottish history snowHead

Although many of us will have enjoyed May holiday skiing on Cairngorm, how often has it offered any unbroken runs from summit to car park over the years ?

moffatross, Probably not often, however the fact that it's possible to get skiing in May in Scotland is a big plus. As roga, says - let's try to get some southern newbies up to Ciarngorm for that weekend. Very Happy

I'm trying to swing a trip up there for easter, will depend on whether I can blag my father-in-laws place at Banchory as I'll have to drag the family up.

It will also depend on knee op, which hopefully will be a small keyhole job that will be sorted out by then.

I haven't skied there for over 15 years, so not expecting it to have changed much.

Had a good day at Glencoe yesterday. Lower down the snow was getting wet and heavy but the main basin, rannoch glades etc were lovely. In the afternoon I even had a good few runs of Fly Paper which was shut - probably a bit irresponsible of me but the snow was beautiful I couldn't resist.

Lovely soft spring snow at Cairngorm yesterday in marked contrast to the icy conditions earlier in the week. It was quite windy higher up but as soon as you you were below half-way station the Fiacall ridge gave a huge amount of protection to the lower slopes. A magic day on the mountain.

Snow must've been melting a lot recently, 'cos I've just enjoyed two awesome high water runs (and there hasn't been enough rain to account for levels) on the Dee and North Esk (kayaking).

It's looking like a great day of spring sliding on Tuesday, so if you can get up and enjoy it - it's certainly the day to aim for this week as it's becoming increasingly wild and unsettled later in the week. Sad

If you can't make Tuesday, Wednesday might be not to bad in the East, where it's expected to stay largely if not completely dry with semi decent overhead, but the wind will be ratcheting up and is likely to limit uplift Wed. Lecht could be the best place for a Wed slide, away from the very top of the tows, the bulk of the runs will be relatively sheltered from the forecast SW winds. Providing the Wednesday wind doesn't creep above the Funicular operating limit (forecast gusts to 60mph, Funicular cut off 70knots) then if overhead is good the full area could be available off the Funicular and the Carpark Shuttle Bus.

Once again though, Tuesday is really looking like the day to aim for.

Photos from Sat:

^View up Sheiling Gully to the White Lady and M1 Poma. Ride anywhere cover with off-piste steeps on the East Lady and Coronation Wall on the Cas side.

^Possible to get under the Funicular to regain the M1 Poma from the White Lady for the first time in 2 months!

^Don't eat to many pies if skiing this piste!

^Aonach Bowl from the WWP. Full length of the Aonach Bowl can be skied out into the lower Ciste Gully then on to the Carpark via the Ciste Gully giving 2000ft of vertical from the top of the Ptarmigan.
