Went up a bit, then across and down some uber-mogul thing (I have no idea how to ski moguls, especially ones that might sink the titantic should they ever escape to the ocean), then down into Switzerland which was an experience. I managed to go head over heels twice crossing my skis in ugly turns and sprain the bottom of my foot (which i'm hoping will be alright tomorrow) - any tips for skiing in the slushy/icy mud based snow without dying? I'm knackered! |
Err, that'll probably be The Wall you did there toiletduckuk - good choice for your first day

I somehow managed to take in virtually the whole of Morzine / Les Gets today - Chamossiere and Nyon early this morning (quite nice, but every man and their dog on it); the Pleney area mid-morning (ok-ish) and the Les Gets bowl this afternoon (utter mush).
Frankly, there is little to recommend conditions around Morzine / Les Gets - the pistes are thin and mushy; holes are opening up; rocks are poking through and there's general half-term madness on top.
Morale amongst our trainee instructor group is pretty low at the moment. We're supposed to be training in readiness for our instructor course the week after next and we just can't find decent terrain to practice on - the slush isn't great to practise plough turns; nothing is grippy enough to let us practice linked carved turns without risking a very hard landing and the only slopes with decent bumps are blacks - great to ski, but not so great to practice on.
And to cap it off I've just opened two bottles of red wine that were corked; a third that was utter rubbish (something someone had left after renting the apartment last year) and the fourth...I'm just contemplating...

toiletduckuk, it wouldn't be so hectic if it wasn't absolute peak weak - UK and Paris half terms. A time when only those with no choice should go anywhere near the French Alps.
As for how to survive the poor snow without killing yourself; well, you could start with reading the piste map and avoiding black slopes. Last time I was at the top of The Wall (with terrible snow) there were huge notices saying only very good skiers should attempt it. There is also a chairlift down (which I took). So anyone skiing down it in one of the busiest weeks of the year, in poor snow, unless they are very good (and lucky, as others will fall and could take you with them) is asking for it.

It wasn't the wall! I was here last year and chairlifted down that one It's the one where you go up a lift and have only one choice of run, a super mogul red that if you go under the boundary rope gets smaller moguls, no alternate. Not sure of the name, I'll go try looking it up.

Hmm is that the one you get to by getting the Chavanette button lift but instead of heading up to the Swiss border, you instead ski down and right a bit to a chair that you'd think (by looking at the piste map) takes to a red that eventually goes down to Lindarets... but when you get there you find there is no choice but to ski down this bloody mogul thing?

Actually your last post said 65.7cm over the next 7 days so todays forecast is worse and the snow forecast for today has not arrived!
Sorry i am not having a go at you i just think some of the snow forecasts are just too 'pie in the sky' and aimed at generating buisness rather than acurate.
We all hope it snows over the weekend and next week.

No problem - agree they are just forecasts. As someone on here said "it doens't count until it is on the ground!"

Fingers crossed. Speaking purely selfishly, I hope it snows not stop until the day before I get there and then brillian sunshine for the whole week (i.e. everyone's ideal!)

Roy Hockley, we did that when we were over there: we still don't know how we got to it but as we rode the lift up we commented on how everyone was falling over on something that looked pretty straightforward. The we set off and found it was henious icy moguls with very flat light, of course we spent most of it on our behinds!

Quick update from Chatel - I hadn't been out for a week, and wasn't expecting much in terms of good skiing today. However, once I had battled through the traffic chaos and reached the top of the Pre La Joux sector things started looking up.
The run from Chatel to Linderets - odd snow, but good fun!
Mossette/Avoriaz back bowl - great piste conditions and interesting/fun off piste.
The Wall - headed right to the gullys - icy in patches (where you don't want it to be above the cliffs) but managed to make "Fresh Tracks" as the snow soffened and allowed you to dig in.
Crossets - good but getting slushy.
And then home to Chatel at 13.00 to beat the crowds and the slush.
I am over the moon to see how well everything is holding up, and with more snow and (hopefully) colder temps forecast, could be a good week coming up.
The locals are still saying tons of snow in March & April....we'll see.

hmmm...it's now turned back to sleet. Oh well, at least it's trying. it's just less than 2 deg according to my equally comedy weather station on the balcony. i'm at 1250 m so I guess a couple of hundred m altitude could make that difference. PhillipStanton, are you in Morzine at 1000 m?
the chamonix meteo is looking pretty good with talks of 30-40 cm on Sun, 30-40 on Mon, and a very active disturbance crossing over on Thur:
http://meteo.chamonix.com/MetPreE.php
While typing (I type slowly) it has turned back to snow. I don't care if I don't have to clear my steps, as long as the mountain gets coverage.
Cheerio...

Yep, I'm in the village - so at around 1000m. The comedy weather station's sensor is also on a southerly balcony, so does suffer from solar gain even when overcast.
One of our group has confirmed that it's been snowing in Avoriaz.
That Meteo Chamonix forecast is looking rather good. The Snow Forecast forecast has improved as well and GFS is looking good

Can confirm it was snowing at 9am this morning at Le Viking 1550m hard. Not sure what happened after that but hope for all you lucky Le Gets still out or going out the forecast runs some much needed snow in. (as per PhillipStanton it was persisting down with rain in the village).
