We drove out for the week arriving yesterday.
First time driving over in the winter and have to say it was a breeze.
We booked a 1950 train from folkestone, got there early and managed to get ourselves on the 1750 instead. Train not even half full, pet check in deserted except one other, totally different to our June experience.
We got in to France for 1925 local time, and drove until 0100 where we got to an Aire just south of Dijon and slept the night in the van.
On the road about 0800 yesterday, there'd been an accident on the A43 towards Chambéry, so we took the A48 down to Grenoble and round instead. We had a quick pitstop just south of Lyon, and got in to BSM about 1ish, where we grabbed some skis from the Intersport and a shop in Super U, and a chance for the dog to stretch his legs. In to tignes around 14:45, a nice walk round the lake with the dog, and a couple of drinks in the Loop bar before picking up the keys from the apartment.
Roads up from Albertville to BSM were surprisingly quiet, and even more so from BSM to Tignes.
All in all, a far easier journey than we'd anticipated.

The top of la Fornet was stunning this morning. Superb piste skiing. Spent all morning lapping it in tranquility.
Snow was superb there all day. Not as nice further down, but great day

Another Christmas day's skiing to be remembered. March weather in December and pretty quiet pistes.
We decided to adopt a spring skiing agenda and followed the sun around Tignes before heading over towards Val D.
Grattalu had what could only be described as hero snow and the Trolles sheet ice so we had everything!
Tomorrow looks like more of the same.

I see Tignes have recommended not using the blacks from the top of Tov. I guess the pisteurs have been a bit busy on Stewart’s Trolles ice sheet!

Not a problem with good skis, edges and technique don't understand why people ski around on fat skis when conditions are} like they are at the moment.
Saw a young lad slide all the way down from the top path taking out 3 people on the way yesterday. Hopefully they were all OK.
A little fluttery snow at present forecast to become a little heavier tonight. Tomorrow may be fat skis

A slight dusting of snow overnight but nothing to get too excited about. The avalanche scars on Lavachet wall have been covered but no more than 50mm in lavachet.
The next few days look like sunny and slightly cooler which should keep the pistes in good condition.
The slopes will probably be a little busier today as lots of traffic was arriving in resort yesterday.
Have a good day.

Good morning! Hoping for some advice and sorry if this has been done before…
Just managed to swap our ski holiday from Morzine to Tignes, arriving tomorrow and all very last minute. We won’t arrive in the resort until 7pm.
Went to book parking as soon as we managed to swap our accommodation and all the car parks are fully booked. Having never visited Tignes before, I’m stumped as to what to do.
Have read everything I can find online and the Indigo website just seems to indicate that there will be spaces, so go to Lac3 on arrival - but not sure that’s going to be possible at 7pm and/or whether it’ll actually be ok?
Sorry if this is all a bit of a cliche for newbies to the resort but would be ever so grateful for any experiences…
Thank you!

@kcr83, I’m not yet in Tignes, but the Lac 3 office has always been open 24/7 in previous years. After hours it is accessed via the exit of the car park near the barrier. Park behind the Maison de Tignes in the bus station area, leave someone with the car, and walk into the car exit of the car park, the office is on the left. They will then sell you a space somewhere, it may be a permit to park on the street. Then go and have a beer and get ready for hitting the slopes!

@kcr83,
Where are you staying? Currently there's lots of outdoor parking available between Le Lac and Lavachet. You will be ok overnight if you cannot sort when you arrive.

@kcr83, we're parked in Lac 3 this week, and although the sign says full, I can assure you it's not remotely full as long as you go down a few ramps. Drive up, grab a ticket and you'll be fine I think, but check with the office beforehand perhaps? As @chocksaway says the night reception is by the exit which should be obvious on the right hand side of the Maison de Tignes as you look at it from the taxi/bus stops outside.

Yesterday, thanks to the advice on this thread, we had our first foray into touring, with a trip along the Vallée du Manchet and up to La Ferme de L'Arsellaz.
We have our dog here with us this week, and it's also his first trip to the Alps so was a first for him too.
Parked in the Manchet car park, and then set off along the XC tracks, up through the little hamlet and then up the valley to the restaurant.
Snow wasn't fun to ski back down, and the dog stayed really close so we had to snowplough down to the XC track, but we had great fun.
Views were amazing, and it felt like we were miles away from anything.
We really enjoyed ourselves, and would like to do more and more of it, especially as the GF gets more experience under her legs.

@swskier, nice, what dog do you have and did you have it on a leash at all? We’ve got a Saluki that I always fancied touring in Scotland with but concerned that being so skinny those type of dogs feel the cold!

Sounds good @swskier. We've been that way by mountain bike in summer but not been (by ski or bike!) in winter. I don't know the location that you skinned to... Assuming it was low risk terrain for avalanches? Did it take long and would it be a nice ski back in better snow?

Thanks so much for the helpful advice, much appreciated. Was having visions of having to park 10km away or worse. Suitably relieved to hear it should be ok. Will report back tomorrow with an update but that he again in the meantime.

@kitenski, @swskier, that’s a lovely stroll up the Manchet and then left toward Cugnai. Looks like the farm was closed which saved you from the €40 cold cut platter. Our whippet (and golden) had a great time there last year and they were both off the lead the whole way after we got past the XC’ers. Cold no problem at all for the skinny whippet - just a padded coat on. We were more worried about her feet but so far that’s not been a problem.

@kitenski, He's a german pointer, and a bit on the skinny side, so we do take a coat out for him, and we've got shoes on him, as he had sore feet and the snow/ice was hurting him a bit.
@mountainaddict, 50% of it was the XC country tracks, the remainder was a summer road up to a restaurant, all in the shade, so fairly safe as far as off piste goes.
@Grinning, think it may have been you that gave us the idea in the first place? Would have been nice to have some lunch up there, but sounds like we saved a fortune.

€15 a pop isn't too bad I suppose. Might've been nice on Mrs MA's birthday in January but showing as available on only four more days of the season

@mountainaddict,
All runs into Breviere, La Daille and Val D are as you would expect with the recent weather, firm and icy with good patches of softer snow generally at the edges.
Depends on your groups ability if you think this is enjoyable or scary.
As they say the best snow is higher up!

We also arrive on the 7th - this is my first time skiing in January, in the past have always done Easter (albeit other resorts) and never seemed to have issues with the weather. Having watched the YouTube video above the conditions still looked good although it was worrying that there was only a small amount of cover lower down? What is the best snow forecast to follow? Praying for some good snow and no rain before we go |
It's worth saying that skiing all over Tignes and the La Daille and Bellevarde side of Val D'Isere last week (with the rain etc etc) I only came across two or three properly thin spots on piste - notably the bottom of Verte heading to the Funival funicular and on the Petite Col blue from the Chaudannes lift back to Le Lac. We didn't get to Brevieres, but down to Les Boisses was fine.
I don't think any one mountain forecast site can be 100% relied on - things change quickly and can be very local. Snow-Forecast (https://www.snow-forecast.com/resorts/Tignes/6day/mid) and WePowder (https://wepowder.com/en/tignes-le-lac) are worth looking at - with an eye on the weather thread on here for context. The weather last week rarely matched exactly what was forecast

We're in Tignes until Saturday, but not skiing on the piste, just walking/touring with the dog.
Last couple of days have cooled down, but forecast looks to get a bit warmer again on the weekend.
Plenty of snow at resort level, so no doubt its fine up on the pistes.

Well there's a bit of a weather battle on between windy and unsettled weather to the north of Tignes and high pressure to the south over the med. So confidence in the forecast is not high especially after Monday. If the weather pattern shifts either way it could change dramatically. Its still going to be mild for the time of year.
The clouds will thicken this afternoon and light precipitation will start just after dark, the snow rain limit will initially be down by the Dam but could sneak up to 2100 through the night. Tomorrow morning will be cloudy and quite windy at altitude and then light showers will come in the afternoon and persist on and off until late evening. Again it might be sleety from the Dam downwards. The showers may carry on until first light Saturday, or they might not. Saturday should be one of sunny periods and winds at height and reasonably nice for the fireworks, just a few high clouds so should be a good night, the temperature at the Bells should be hovering around zero, so pretty good for watching my council tax go up in smoke!
For those who make it out of bed as 2023 dawns, the weather will be nice, a bit more wind though, so you might need a sheltered terrace for the Bloody Mary. Just a few clouds bobbing merrily below blue skies. Monday will be mainly cloudy and a little less wind, there might be the odd light shower. On current forecasts Tuesday morning should have some sunny intervals, the sky will then fill in for a grey afternoon. Beyond that its all a bit of a lottery.....

@ally12259,
What conditions are you expecting?
The pistes are in good condition, the off piste has improved but its not waist deep!
The forecast for the next few days is a little snow and sunshine so i don't expect the conditions to change significantly.

Last night's forecast snow didn't really materialise except for a few flockons here and there but the forecast for today changed to snow by lunchtime and during the afternoon. Hopefully just a delay of the front coming through.
The viz and conditions were good until about 11am when the clouds started rolling in. Started snowing by 12 noon and hopefully will continue this afternoon/evening.
Tomorrow looks sunny with the possibility of some fresh powder

Couple of inches in Le Lac so far. The Balcony of our apartment looks directly over the main road up in to town, so we've had some great fun over the last hour watching people struggling to come up, and some vehicles being towed up.
Made for a nice break from packing and tidying before we leave tomorrow.

Not sure quite what happened with yesterday's snow. Started off quite promising in the afternoon. I drove down to Bourg about 3 o'clock where the rain was lashing down. Once I got back about 7 it had all passed and at 2100m / VC seemed pretty squelchy.
Today it was a short tour down off Col du Palet and back over Col de La Tourne. Crust everywhere. All altitudes from 2650m downwards and all aspects. Light sillons in many places just below the level of the cols so guessing last night finished as rain even pretty high up.
A super day out nonetheless though having to rely on 'kick turn, traverse, repeat' a fair few times..!
