We have had gale force wind all night here, at 3pm I had to get up to shut flapping shutters and it was 4 degrees in the village. It's been torrential rain since about 6am . Through the murk I cannot identify any snow line on the Dents du Midi yet. Still pouring and dreading looking at the webcams. Looks like 0 teaching on the cards for the foreseeable so I have booked a flight out for a few days.

Also banging shutters here in a windy night in Les Gets, tipping down with rain, 1.4C at 7 a.m.
Going to find some diy projects and get stuck into more reading.

It's trying to snow at the moment, there is the occasional snowy flurry at the Chalet, the temp looks like it's dropping on the wind chill in between very heavy gusts. Webcams showing snow at Rochassons, others haven't been updated as we speak. maybe in a few mins.
forecast says temp will drop through the day, fingers crossed the cloud doesn't clear before the temp drops to a suitable level

Yes it's improving, when I went out at 7.15 it was 7 degrees and now just over an hour later it's 4 degrees and looking a bit sleetier. Fingers crossed again.

It's so good to see everything turning white within a few mins. We were talking yesterday about how everything was so green. BUT now it's all white again, Lovely.

Light cover in Chatel but the flakes are big! Even if we get 10cm or so it will make a huge difference on the lower slopes. Weather outlook thread suggesting lower than seasonal average temps setting in from the 17th...lets hope we get some snow with the low temps. For now this will do, nice to look out the window and see heavy snowfall, couple more hours of this will help out a lot.
Its a shame, the reservoirs are full again and we dont have the temps to produce some fake stuff. Pistes were running really well, best so far this season and heavy rainfall took it right back, yesterday was very poor. More positive now though. Hopefully things start to look up from the end of this week.

Snow has stopped and that looks to be it as the front has now passed to the south of us. For the first time this season we have issued a major edit to the morning forecast. Very disappointing amounts lower down - some of the earlier rain will have been snow higher up - but probably no where near as much as was modelled.

Quelques flocons (snow flurries) in Morzine village this morning. Went up Pleney side towards the Nauchets lift. Best pistes - Violettes and a section of piste B on the way back down. On piste conditions very mixed. Hoping for more snow. Can anyone recommend a reliable meteo (snow / weather forecast)?

Interesting that they are suggesting warmer than average on Friday, most model runs are showing it relatively cold from Thursday

@Feast, Chamonix Meteo is produced by real life humans and very specific to local area taking into account local climate etc. Note also that they are saying milder than seasonal average, not mild per se.

First few runs of the day were great, soft powder on top of an alarmingly thin base that got more exposed by each skier that went over it.
As the day wore on the powder got scraped a bit, but it was all much better than expected, and it was cold enough for the snow cannons to be running in Champery/Crozets.

Heading to Les Gets in 3 weeks and despite the fact I shouldn't be too worried this far out it does concern me that the start to the season has been so poor. Watching the webcams is like watching a horror movie with all of the twists and turns!
Fingers crossed for a big dump in the next week to get this season off and running. Even a few days of low temps would help the artificial snow production!
I hope those out there now are managing to have a good time despite the difficult snow conditions.

Was in Les Gets today. The morning's snow, whist welcome, was wet heavy snow on top of a slushy or scraped base. Best snow was actually lower down on the artificial snow. Lots of sad brown bits. Fun day of course, but fingers crossed more more snow soon.

Some pics of the off piste at the top today. We got some really nice skiing in after work. The snow quickly turned wet and heavy but it was still plenty of fun, maybe 20cm of fresh on the top 200 vertical or so. At the base there was pehaps 2 inches, up to 3. However the freezing level had not dropped fast enough and so the lower slopes have improved but not by much at all.

If the snow arrives later in the week and during the weekend we will no doubt be getting back into the off piste if conditions are safe enough. Cant wait to ski some more off piste, hopefully some nice light powder, today was more spring like snow, which I like but it is January after all.
It was heavy and sliding quite easily today at convexity'. However we were skiing near bushes and staying away from any large exposed faces whilst skiing smaller single pitches. Not very safe out there yet but we did not encounter any problems, skiing slopes which we know well and approaching with caution. Hopefully things will get into a more consistent trend soon and allow the snowpack a chance to stabilise.
Piste conditions, up top were decent. Lower levels still slushy in parts with puddles from the rain late last night.
Overall, still a great day for work and a thoroughly enjoyable ski afterwards.

Updates on piste conditions would be good. We've skied the grand massif today and it was really quite good on piste. Might drive up to Morzine and head towards Avoriaz and beyond tomorrow - depending upon any reports you nice people send

Very, very, very icy base. As in ice. Not hardback. I spend 4 hours skiing with my children and their school today and the return this afternoon was horrid, thankfully the kids are good enough to ski the off piste at the side but so many people with no control or ability to stop careering down on ice. Saw two nasty accidents involving bare heads onto very hard snow. If I didn't have to go up with them tomorrow, I wouldn't.

Spent yesterday skiing around Avoriaz and between Les Lindarets and above Chatel today and have to say the pistes are in amazingly good condition considering what nature's provided so far this winter.
Was expecting just ice and crust but while there are patches of ice around the snow on top is still fluffy and only seen the odd patch of slush - though not been down too low yet.

Really that bad? Which resort? The GRand Massif normally reflects the PDS and it was really quite nice here today. Anything above 1600 was OK

First full day today and to be honest was pleasantly surprised. Yes there is a lot of ice but also some great pistes. There is still some light fluffy stuff to be found on the easy to reach off piste inbetween the pistes and only spend any time on the pistes to reach these area. Was even akin to skiing in the Yorkshire dales on thin snow on grass on the Swiss side. Tbh I had a great day

Having had a couple of days off, cold, flu-ey type stuff, we thought we would stay local and have a quick ski around Les Gets and have to agree with @MeMyselfandI, that it was not very pleasant. Huge patches of ice after all the rain and we abandoned pretty quickly thinking we would leave the patches of snow that are there to people who have not many days here and went for a walk with snow shoes over above Ancrenaz. Will try Chatel side tomorrow.
