dennisp, we usually stay in Les Gets till around 14th or 21st (dates off the top of my head not at all specific) April. By that stage we are getting ourselves up to Avoriaz very first thing - we ski for two or three hours and come back - enjoy the sunshine and eating on the terrace, watching the garden re-appear and go down to the lake, or eat at Montriond lake. I am sure that others carry on for much longer in the day than us - I just like the snow first thing when really hard and don't like it once it gets slushy. Then again we have had friends arrive right at the end of March and had lots of new snow for them.

dennisp, I've been out the last two seasons at that time and it's been great, people who have been here for 10+ years would say that there's a high liklihood it'll be shite. I skied Avoriaz the end of the first week it opened and LG first week, I had loads of fun doing both and there was very little snow. In a nutshell, they're pretty good at making the most of what there is around here but you could miss out in which case there's still loads of stuff to do (IMO).
mheadbee, I'm at about 1200 in LG, had very heavy, wet snow yesterday afternoon after watching the Les Perrieres run get washed away and have woken up to about 7-10cm of fluffier stuff on the drive. May head up this afternoon if the weather is good enough for the kids to go to ski school so can report back after that if you'd like.

I am not due out for 4 weeks and all can change, I just wanted to make sure that absolute downpour was countered by the preceding snow. If it had been washed away and not replaced I could have been stuck to this thread for two weeks watching the warmer weather wondering if we were going to get another dump before I got there. Looks like its still in good shape so avoiding any more big rain falls all should be good and well.
Many thanks.

How easy is it to get from Les gets to Avoriaz without a car?
I have stayed in Chatel 5 times but always with a car to drive to Linga if necessary, I only skied to Morzine once during that time and Can't really remember how I got back. I stayed in Les Gets last March but never left the local area because it dumped constantly and we had the kids with us in lessons. This Feb I am in Les gets on a lads trip and I want to make sure it is easy to get to if Les Gets is struggling in any way as we are getting an airport transfer rather then renting cars. Is Avoriaz accessible via lifts or will we need a bus first?
|
|
|
|
|
|
mheadbee, dead easy. But it does take a little time and you have either a walk across Morzine to the Super-Morzine lifts or a bus to Prodains or Ardent. I think I'd take the bus.
I don't think there's a Les Gets-Prodains bus, although there used to be an infrequent Les Gets-Morzine service.
I am sure that one of the resorts will have a website and they may have published bus timetables on it though

50cm plus on the upper mountain around Pre La Joux this morning - some awesome conditions first thing (lifts were slow to open higher up) and the best morning of the season so far with car parks and pistes much quieter.

MoodyFFS, Yep - a very timely snowfall! Avoriaz is reporting 50cm in resort at 1800m - which seems about right.

Great day, plenty of fresh higher up. Lot's of blasting this morning and most places late in opening - through lucky timing at lifts managed first tracks down the Combe de Machon! Lot's of instability around and quite a few reasonably sized slides - most of which blasted, but not all. There are some people skiing in some very silly places! Enjoy the conditions, but ski with caution and take advice if necessary.

This monster was reportedly set off by pisteurs - just to the right of all that is the famous Leche off piste route.

We have driven back to Les Gets today from Austria, which we left in rain, glorious to come around the lake, Evian was buzzing with people all out walking, and then come up the road. The river was absolutely roaring down and loads of waterfalls in unusual places, and then we got back and found Morzine all white and then up the road to our own place which was very snowy. Looking forward to unpacking and getting out tomorrow.

Apparently there had to be a rescue from one of the lifts in Avoriaz yesterday. Taken from Dauphine:

It was very beautiful and quiet on Mt Chery today - like being on a private mountain most of the time. Into the GO for the first time this year and a catch up on the news. Confirmation of news we had heard back in the autumn of the possibility of a new telepherique to go from close to the school and lake (and us!!) over the village to land between the Pointe chairlift and the top of the gondola. A lot of support for this but as always some opposition too. The idea is to take some of the pressure of the Chavannes slopes. There would need to be improvement to some of the lifts and snowmaking on Mt Chery. Fear is that it would take too many people over there - well from our point of view.

DJL and Chatel Snow, we are driving from Sheffield via London- just the cheapest way possible so it looks like ferry crossing to Calais.
We are aiming to rotate drivers and go through the night so we can ski Saturday (I did this to Andorra a couple of years back and it made for some rather fun, if light headed skiing!). Worth it go squeeze 8 days out of a Sat-Sat trip!
I think this means it will be quiet (at least I can hope?).
We had thought it would be worth avoiding tolls, and getting cheap fuel in Luxembourg since that was the non-toll route Google was suggesting. Happy to take advice on whichever way is cheapest though, and on your advice(s) will reconsider!
Can't wait to be sliding...

Pamski, if its near to your place that surely says good things for rentals doesn't it (although I guess won't impact too much as you have a good location I gather anyway? Will they in that case be introducing a new piste to get back to this lift area? Im fuzzy on the layout, but is the intention to bring skiers down perriers from the bowl and up Mont Chery? i.e., using the car park down there? IIRC I have read there is off piste that goes down that way, but no piste?
Sounds like a good thing to me. Now all we need is a ridiculous link from Graydon to L'Encraz! (and from Drouzin to Abondance )
|

dennisp, we are a bit further across and closer to the centre than the Perriers area. I reckon that skiers could come down from the Chavannes and just head left under the Chavannes Express chairlift as if going to the restaurant at the lake. There is a small car park up near the school - signed as Weekend Parking but never strikes me as much space. Maybe I will be going in for Park in My Drive!
-2C at 8.30 - recent snow disappeared off some of the trees in the garden now.

clong - see post from DJL re. routes on page 15
Personally I take the French toll roads from Calais - Reims - then Besancon, over the Jura and round Lac Leman and come into Chatel via Morgins pass. V easy route as generally the French toll motorways are super quiet and it is rare to see roadworks. If you are diesel - then its about at least 15% cheaper than in the UK.
I think that route is the quickest - and time is money!!!
ps - mild in Chatel since yesterday. The highs of Sunday were replaced with not so good conditions - cloud and a warm wind on Monday afternoon, so snow very wet - but slopes v quiet.

The Foehn that was forcasted has hit the Alps, so no real surprise re warm temps - can only keep our fingers cross that the damage will not be too bad and for some colder temps to follow so that they can at least start the snow cannons . I suppose all the reservoirs are full after all the rain.

Noooooo - myself and 7 other dad's are coming out to Morzine tomorrow for 5 days. I presume even with a few days of higher temperatures the pistes should hold up pretty well after the recent snow?
Anyway I suppose we'll find out for ourselves tomorrow afternoon - Pleney here we come.

Louis, Pistes are bullet hard for the first time this season at Super Chatel this morning (still like that at 11.30am) - as even with mild temps, as soon as you get a clear slot, the snow will often re-freeze early and late. Hopefully they will soften this pm - but if this is the pattern for rest of week - might not be too much damage - but will depend on the cloud cover.
Loads of uncertainty in the outlook as models are all over the place - but hints of snow early next week.

Four reasonable days' skiing on the Swiss side. Sunny and warm, Easter conditions except it turns cold at 3pm so somewhat unusual. Pistes in Champoussin were closed til 1030 am yesterday due to ice, something I have never seen in 7 years' skiing here. None of the locals I have spoken to have ever known it either.
Links to and from Crosets were very marginal today and limited runs still open there. Next week's cold and snow can't come too soon. Not sure how much will be skiable tomorrow.

Spring conditions in Chatel - but without the strong spring sunshine - so as Sanman says above - its a bit weird. Plenty of snow here so mild spell should be negotiated with few issues - but looking forward to some winter conditions next week, as, at least the snow cannon will be used again - which is something that has barely happened since late Nov / early Dec.

Skiing in Morzine surprisingly OK today - very hard pistes in the morning, turning to slush eventually, but not as quickly as it does in spring as it's not as warm. I think tomorrow will be very limited indeed - will start at Ardent, as the pistes there are pretty sheltered from sunshine and may have preserved some snow.
Good coverage on piste, a tribute to the snowmaking so far. Off piste very marginal coverage and not enjoyable; plenty of rocks pocking through. "Proper" off-piste (touring etc) not recommended by anyone you ask due to avalanche risk.
It desperately needs to cool down - I was skiing in a fleece and glove liners today. In mid January. Felt very odd indeed.
Will be based in Chamonix early next week and Chatel towards the end of next week/next weekend - curious to see what the differences are.

We skied from Ardent about 9.30 this morning - over to the Chavanettes and down the wall - by chair - the Wall itself was firmly closed right off at that time although later in the day I think it opened and I could see people on it. Snow very hard to start with over there but at the bottom of Planachaux there is very little snow left and better to go round the track to get the chair back up. Skied around Les Crosets and back down the Abricotine which was a little lumpy in places and eventually down to Ardent - the run down was fine apart from being a bit puddingey before the last bend. Glad that Harry Flashman, is nice and warm - I am still using tea bags in my thick Hestra gloves and all the layers on. Just in case I get caught on that chair - the Interets - for three hours of course.
