Anyone know of a local offpiste guidebook available in local stores (preferably in English)?
Also seen the rumours of Powder Club for buttons on a Saturday, website has nada, is this verifiable? Talk to them Friday evening?

fatbob, you want the Andy Thurner offpiste guide (second edition), there's also a Ski Touring one by him, both excellent. For sale at Sport Pete and Jennwein.

Good day - mostly skiied up around Galzig. Ventured up to Valluga once but the light was rubbish. Red 19 was unpisted, there were quite a lot of people coming up on the lift and deciding to go back down. Also there was a guy being med-evaced on the way down, looked like he'd gone off the route cos of the vis and done his knee.
On piste conditions are great, off piste is looking decidedly thin in places, but still some powder to be had. Snow on piste is quite soft so the runs are getting pretty cut up, particular blue 4 and 1 back into resort.
Nearly got killed on blue 4 by a bunch of gnarly off piste c*nts who decided to overtake me very close at speed on both sides. Bellends.
Also saw the helicopter taking someone off blue 5. Be careful out there!

Sounds like a normal home run down Steissbachtal . I'm amazed there are not more accidents down there. I tend to keep high on the right (basically traverse the Bachseit slope) as much as possible. If it's really busy you are better of taking the detour at the top to the skier's right (4a) and then skiing down Kandahar (black 2). If that doesn't appeal you can also take the Tanzboden lift up from the end of 4a and ride the cable car down from Galzig. All of these options are preferable to a blood wagon.

Steissbachtal is the most dangerous run & its not normally the off piste folks.
Speed is the manj factor,carvers.
People in past seasons havE been killed on this run
I aways avoid this run at Peak times. Always take Kandahar or direct
Down Osthang.

Helicopters are not unusual. During the peak season they are hauling folk off
From 1st lift till the last non stop.. Arlberg has three Choppers.

I didn't find blue 4 too bad generally, it was just the narrow bit at the top. Once it opens up it's ok.
Beginners are quite easy to deal with, just give them loads of room and ski slowly - but when a dozen guys start zipping past you very close and you can't even put a turn in to scrub off speed without hitting them it's much harder.
In any case St Anton doesn't feel too busy to me at the moment, I assume it is a fairy quiet week overall because I was expecting it to be much busier. Barely had to queue at any lifts.
First time in St Anton or Austria though, so didn't know what to expect. (so far it's really good apart from the indoor smoking)

bobmcstuff, only indoor smoking in temporary structures, ice bars etc.
Think people make too much of Steissbachtal, there's plenty of room down there, yes OK people ski fast but if you're a competent skier and give others a wide berth shouldn't present much of a big deal I'd have thought.....

Markymark29, not in my experience.... Saw people smoking in s'Murmele, in the hotel bar I was in, in Haeferl, Cafe Schneider etc. If there's a ban it's not enforced. Maybe it changed at New Year??

The Underground is the only 100% smoke free bar I know of. Although I *think* Cafe Anton is also smoke free indoors, not 100% sure though.

Pub 37 used to be, although isn't this season, Cuba I think is also smoke free, and Kandahar might be (been a few years since I was in either of them).
Whether you can smoke indoors or not depends on the size of the place and the owners, if a bar is below a certain size (eg Pub 37, Fang, Tom Dooley's) then it is up to the owners, larger places have to have a separate smoking area (Anthony's for example), some of which are better segregated/ventilated than others.

stanton, what's the easiest way to get to Sonnenkopf without a car? There's no direct bus from St Anton is there? Is it possible to get a Post Bus from Stuben?

futurecut, it's no secret, never was. It's on the piste map for a start. Thing is 99% of people who know can't be bothered to go there from St Anton so it stays quiet

We were staying in St Jacob a few years ago - and we asked our landlady where the best snow was and which area was her favourite. She expressed a wry smile and said go to the Sonnenkopf area but don't tell anyone. We did and whilst not a big area, we had a ball laying down fresh tracks with just a handful of other people. I prefer these relatively unknown areas - it is great to escape the crowds and feel far safer, not getting wiped out by some noob with all the gear and no idea.

From my limited but fun experiences, Arlberg's so big if one secret disappears there's always somewhere else to go!
So far it's been a cr@p season and I've had a great time every time i've ventured out! Still not sure if i prefer it to Montafon (there are 93.2% less douches in the Silvretta) but there appears to be a limitless number of options here!
Wouldnt worry too much about secrets, especially in a resort where everone seems to ski with a guide!

Light above Nasserein was pretty flat so went over to Rendl, which is a great little area. Spent a little while watching people nailing themselves in the park. They're currently building an absolutely gigantic kicker, not sure if it is for public or competition.
We were a little late out this morning after overindulging at apres yesterday (and the fact it's staff day off so no cooked breakfast to get up for...) so we were skiing Rendl over lunch when it was nice and quiet.
Staff were trying to get us to go apres with them today (they're all about our age give or take), but I don't think my liver or my wallet can take it. Plus I feel disappointed with myself if I end up missing part of a ski day...
Might try and go over to sonnenkopf tomorrow - but I think there will be limited appetite from the other people in my group because it seems like a bit of a faff to get to and I feel like we've only just scratched the surface of the local stuff.

Bit cloudy/misty in st anton this morning. Skiied over to Stuben which was sunny and comparatively quiet, then came back and went up Rendl for a bit. Did a few runs through the park as well, and actually held it together. Unusual for me!
Last day skiing tomorrow, unless we can get some in on Sunday morning. Will be sad to go - been very impressed by St Anton and the Arlberg in general. Need to come back to ski the Lech/Warth side. Although Scottish skiing beckons

Late start due to hangove. Snow was soft, sticky and generally hard work, then I got rained on so sacked it off.
Spent most of the time skiing wishing I had my Ones, they blast through soft cut up stuff really easy. The dinky carvers I'm using were just getting deflected all over the place.
Might go out tomorrow morning depending on visibility/hangover.

Wondered why Rendl had been closed, been at work all day and noticed the gondolas out but unmoving. Looked like a perfect day for Rendl from resort, sunny and warm until not that long ago. Weather closing in now so I'm off to catch the rest of the rugby.
