Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Thanks to everyone that replied and yes, Madonna is a consideration for us... but I won't let this drift any further, apologies to anyone offended but as mentioned, it was a continuation of my now abandoned Austria trip - and there is still a bit of Italy availability for anyone like me, with kids that are caught by the new Austria restrictions!

I had my booster 6 days before arrival. No problems at all.

It really is fairly relaxed. The only issue I have is that people wanting to see your jab proof tend to grunt some incomprehensible German which is then followed by a 5 second delay while I remember what they might want.

@andybomb1, yep, the words you are listening for are usually in the realms of “2-G regeln” (zwei-gay) “Grüner Pass” or “Impf Pass”. ID is “Ausweis”.

Strangely, nobody has ever asked me for ID, despite three people querying my name as male rolling eyes I don't know why they would suddenly think it was written the other way around to everyone else's pass?

A question on the required pcr; I’ll be triple vaccinated and currently recovered from covid. My booster is on 10/1. My trip on the 18/1.
It seems daft to have to pcr before flying when I’m not only recovered from the virus but also triple vaccinated?
If I do have to pcr test I’m flying at 2pm on the 18th, when should I do my test?

Thanks

How “currently recovered”? That’s the issue I am dealing with… my research tells me that a positive test PCR test result is possible for weeks, or even months, after recovery (ie no more symptoms). I have a document in German, which I will get translated tomorrow, which might provide clues to how to deal with that issue.

Anybody used or planning to use a pre-flight PCR from Randox, linked to on Crystal website. I have a dropbox near so will use that but how long does it take to get a result. I fly on 8th at 6:40am so was going to do the test and drop it on 5th. Just spoken to someone who used them before and it was 2 days before he got a result s I dare not leave it till 6th. If I test on 5th and they send result on 7th (within 24 Hours) what will be the date its valid to. Is it 2 days from when it was sampled or 2 days from results?

@Swen, 48 hrs from sampling to arrival, so a test taken on 5th will be too early and thus out of date.

so unless I sample on 6th, (nobody will know what time on 6th) then it wont be valid. Its got to get to Ireland apparently to be tested so it would have to go overnight and they process on the 7th to be valid. Thats all too close, what a carry on this is. This was Crystals only solution unless you live in a major city or near an airport. We will all be in the hospital with stress at this rate.

@Swen, The one I did (Randox), you log the swab on the website when you take it but before you post (I think there may have been a code to write on or something) and this time is printed on the certificate. For 48hr turnaround, it's unlikely a postal service is going to be fast enough – you need to find a clinic or at least a dedicated drop box.

I have a local drop box which I assume DPD collect from and send direct. DPD delivered test this morning and I only ordered yesterday afternoon so do seem to understand the urgency here

@Swen, we did a Randox yesterday dropped off at 4pm in Manchester had an email at 4am today negative so they didn't muck about.

However that's when the 48hr gap was confirmed and yesterday's only worked for 72hrs so I'm off out now for another go with a different test provider so fingers remain crossed

Hoteliers are screaming about the new rules. Basically they are facing massive cancellations from UK, Norway, Denmark and Netherlands, while being left to sit on fresh food ordered for those visitors! The Austrian health minister probably won't survive this. Get ready for more chaos ahead!

I’m not surprised they are annoyed, they have made some very good points there. The rule changing every couple of days or so is sure to put a lot of people off as they can’t keep up with it, they are worried about things changing whilst they are there (even if they manage to get there), it’s all ‘background stress’ even for the most horizontal of people. It would make a lot more sense if they said ‘right these are the rules for the next 3 weeks we might change it after 3 weeks’ because then people know where they stand.
As for the 10pm curfew on NYE, ridiculous, like they said all people will do is have their own parties at home which would probably be worse for infection transmission.

It’s really hard to disagree with you about the 48 hour thing. It’s certainly causing major headaches for many, including a guest we have arriving on the 27th. Austria is trying to balance slowing down the almost inevitable spike from Omicron and keeping its Winter tourism going. Tourists come from all over Europe - the UK, whilst important, is only likely to accelerate the problem unless some stronger measures are put in place.

From my personal perspective, I can see both sides of the source of frustration.

As I write, the infection rates here, across the country have yet again fallen, with the notable exceptions of Vorarlberg and Tirol. Possibly unsurprisingly.

It’s very difficult to find a PCR test that returns results within the required 48 hour window. When I phoned the local doctor here in Obertauern, she just laughed. Might be easier in the UK though with places like Expresstest.

Who is saying that? Tirol has been down every day for weeks, also a considerable drop in hospital numbers this morning.

It’s definitely possible for quick ones, like I said about the Central Apotheke in Worgl, when I thought you were in Kitzbuhel not Obertauern. That was a bargain by UK standards! No result yet for my Express Test PCR done at Heathrow yesterday afternoon but I hope it’s through soon as I need to go to Tescos before it shuts at 7pm.

Thanks, that's reassuring, 12 hour turn around to Ireland is incredible and means that I should be ok dropping on 6th to fly on the 8th, ill probably get it back and it will be a fail leaving me to fall at the last fence.

I’m going to have a look for somewhere local for my next one so you can get it done and back before setting off to the airport. I’m not going all the way there (2.5-3 hours drive for me usually unless I use Birmingham) only to find it’s not back in time or positive. On the ‘breakthrough infections’ thread there’s quite a few who have negative LFs then test positive on the PCR presumably with Omicron.

I just asked a friend who did the Randox walk in at Stansted (for the way home mind not to catch a flight). Was swabbed on arrival and had the email result 12 hours or so later which was very fast indeed considering it went from Stansted to Ireland to be tested!

Quick question for the hive minds on here. First time posting, but long time reading and benefitting from the sage advice. Thank you!

The latest regs have a section for Minors at section 12. 12a covers the under 12s; and 12b covers the 6-15s who could use the Holiday Ninja Pass. The language used in 12b states that 6-15s are exempt from requirement to be vaccinated or recovered and tested if they can show at least one PCR/LAMP (72 hour) or antigen (48 hour), and then comply with the Holiday Ninja Pass.

We have a 13 yr old, very recently recovered from Covid, single jab. For entry to Austria next week, I would like to use the antigen 48 hour test, rather than PCR, as he is very recently covid recovered so not sure he would test PCR negative (who knows?!).

Question is - do others agree that technically an antigen (48 hour) is acceptable for this age group? U.K. resident.

Next question is whether the airline (likely EasyJet) would accept a negative antigen for a 13 yr old, rather than a PCR, as per section 12b? Who knows I guess…

Assuming we can enter Austria, I would then plan to use the “recovery” certificate for the lifts/hotels.

Any thoughts gratefully received.

@Jcl34, the use of a proof of recovery certificate is classified as complying with the 2G rule for entry to lifts, hotel, etc so should be ok. Think you would be advised in asking easyJet about boarding rules because 5.f of the new regs says “Transport companies are not allowed to transport persons who are prohibited from entering the Federal Republic of Austria from these states or territories”

Thanks! My reading of 5 is that we are not prohibited from entering Austria due to the application of 5b - being boosted and negative PCR (for adults) - which says that the prohibition in 5a is switched off.

Well, trip looks back on; the hotel is persuasive and adamant that rules are fine for UK. I know that's necessarily a guide, but here goes. This is my list for prep - have I missed anything off?

1. Covid insurance – only take the basic travel insurance from the company • without winter sports, to top up my pre-existing annual winter sports cover https://www.lv.com/travel-insurance
2. Book and take with me LFT for return trip https://www.chronomics.com/test-to-return
3. Complete pre-travel clearance https://entry.ptc.gv.at/en.html
4. Book and take drive through PCR at Heathrow with three-hour response (let’s play safe) https://ldn.randox.com/covid-19-booking/?loc_id=1 ** Book day 2 PCR
5. Pack work laptop in case I fail the return to UK LFT
6. Pack ski boots in hand luggage with some ski gear in case suitcase lost
7. Pack LFT in to hand luggage in a clear plastic back as it is a liquid
8. Download latest NHS Covid Cert, copy into Apple Wallet and print off a copy
9. Await PCR result and keep logging on to Snowheads…..
10. Copy PCR result into files on phone and print off
11. Keep logging on to Snowheads….

• Other providers are available!

**Edit: Added book day 2 PCR for return

Point 2 you could use a chemist in resort, depending which one you are going to 25 Euro for the test

I’m currently in Austria and just wanted to say it’s so well organised. The NHS QR code worked with the Austrian Green pass and I have used both with no issues.

Tyrol are doing free gargle PCR tests (can register for 3 a week) and the results was back within 10 hrs. You get emailed a pdf with QR code and all details required (and in English) and we also used one of the PCRs taken in resort, and again result back 12 hrs.

It’s so very organised once here, feels safe and slopes so quiet=fab week. I just wish Uk would use similar.

Just arrived in Salzburg today so snuck in before the latest changes. Triple vaccinated and no need for a PCR.

Nearly in trouble - one member of airline crew failed to turn up and there were no standby crew left onsite. Fortunately this is BA from Heathrow and it was early, so more standby crew were called in. I could see it being a problem later in the day or with a smaller airline.

It’s quiet. Very quiet. Not hit the slopes yet, relaxed in the pool and been to the supermarket before early closing.

Airport had army guys after border control checking NHS pass (just wanted to see #3, so no concern re: time since #2) which I had added to my Apple wallet - plus my passport to check it was MY pass I guess.

BA had distributed a paper form (“Registration pursuant to section 2a of the COVID Regulation on entering Austria”) which I didn’t think I could tick any of the options to (so didn’t) as I suspect it’s out of date, but no-one wanted the form in Austria anyway. That form will presumably change again tomorrow anyway.

Hire car place virtually empty rather than the usual rammed. Free upgrade to a brand new SUV.

We cut across Bavaria. Still unsure of the rules there (transit may be fine). Border crossing posts evident but unmanned. Road quiet.

Hotel finally booked yesterday (my plans changed from a friends apartment and I wasn’t dripping silly money until I knew the new rules). Loads of rooms available. New Year dinner cancelled, now back on but with 10pm grand finale. Don’t know if I’m bothered about that.

Here’s to the skiing tomorrow.
