I guess this is the run down to Linga we are talking about. At this time of year it will probably get no sun at all all day - certainly not on the upper part which faces pretty much West

Please be careful skiing anywhere tomorrow, there have been three avalanches here on Swiss side today. One near Pointe du Porte du Soleil return piste to Les Crosets. Dogs and pisteurs were still searching late this afternoon. Hopefully nobody involved. Also small slip near Planachaux piste, Vorlaz/abricotine piste. Champery Bar du Guide is abuzz with stories of daring do and near misses. I have friends who are pisteurs here and please bare in mind if you ski somewhere silly you put yourself at risk but also the rescue services. Reports of skiers in crazy crazy places, high mountain guides here are reluctant to venture on off piste routes currently, this must be show how unsafe things are. Otherwise on a brighter note- the snow on piste is chuffing marvelous. Due to be sunny all week and judging by Avoriaz today- super quiet! Yeehah!

summer, we saw some "proper muppets" trekking out today on slopes that were clearly unstable - it makes me scared as hell as I always worry it will come down on the piste!

I wasn't impressed to see an ESF instructor off piste last friday with his group - not one of them had shovels or probes clearly... and I bet no transcievers either

I fundamentally agree with you hazardtape. Off piste is, well, off piste. And the avalanche risk last Friday was probably 4 for the area. So a black and white view says they shouldn't have been there.
But, it depends on where they were and when (which I'm sure you'll share). It could have been that the slope's actually controlled, but just not advertised as such. Or it could have been that the avalanche risk was lower on certain aspects / altitudes.
So, the ESF instructor could have made a good judgement call. Or he could have made a crappy one.
The real worry is that they won't have explained their reasoning to the group - so now people in that group will consider that behaviour acceptable.
And on balance I agree with you...

Tis a cold clear night here in Morzine! Snow is still fabulous - so I am told, I was shackled to a laptop and then cleaning all day.
Have found Fish and Chips. I am a contented woman.

FlyingStantoni,
Well yes judgement is a very difficult call, and is dependent on attitudes to risk. We were off to the far right of the Chaux-Fleurie lift. They could only have got there by ducking a rope and a traverse. There is only one part steep enough to cause issues and in fact in had slid a week or so before. A judgement I was happy with for myself, but I don't feel is appropriate for a seemingly un-equipped ski school group.... Just doesnt set the right tone for the students, or others watching!

Saturday coming to Morzine. First time at the alps. Could someone give me a quick abc on what to skii? Will be there for a week. Am willing to travel even a bit(or hike to offpiste). Skill level: medium/pro - so I like some challenges. So abc that gives me the most from my stay in Morzine (/avoriaz/les gets). Much prechiatet.
ps. maybe start from easy and move from there to more challenging runs.

Oh and one quick question: how long are the longest runs in this area of the alps? I was looking forward to runs 6 kilometer long and over and was a bit "shocked" when in found on some web page that many of the runs are 3km or something like that...

I know what you mean hazardtape. And I agree that it's not a good advertisement.
FWIW, that slope isn't on an aspect that typically gets wind-loaded (the other side of the ridge is), though it does get a lot of sun. The biggest risks tend to be full-depth wet slides in warm weather and, further down the valley, wet slides from above. If it's below zero; has snowed and the wind isn't from the north east then it's probably one of the safer slopes to ski.

FlyingStantoni,
Here here, a lot of its about local knowledge.

trustno1, hit the search function. Without being funny, there are loads of posts. In summary, though, make sure you get up Chamossiere; go over to Mont Chery; get over to Pre la Joux / Plaine Dranse / Linga and ski Hauts Forts.
Morzine and Les Gets don't have many really long runs, but a lot of them interconnect. The runs around Avoriaz and Plaine Dranse are longer - or interconnect to form long runs. The lifts are (generally) fast, so uplift is generally painless.

The death in the avalanche on Mont Chery the season before last is a reminder that local knowledge isn't everything though.

It was all creeping and crawling down the side of slopes around the valley here yesterday..Few few bigger slips let go but all in off piste areas. Some fairly big slabs too. Sunny though onpiste great, and still some safe pockets of powder to be had!

I was looking on one of the 360degree webcams (Chamoussiere?) yesterday and there looked to have been a big slide above the black run that goes off to the right (looking down), as there seemed to be a big bare patch - or is that always there?

andy from embsay, looking like a creep to me. The shoulders of that run - particularly skier's right about 300-400m down the run - tend to slide and it's the reason they often close it after heavy snow. It's not one for the "closed run" ropes to duck.

FlyingStantoni, the one on the picture posted by BergenBergen looks like it, but on the video on the other thread, the skiers appear to be skiing downhill with the upslope to their right, IOW in the opposite direction, so I don't think it can be the same one. It could be the slope from Point de L'Au towards Crosets, but from my memory it isn't that narrow.
I did see some impressive cracks in the snow pack while we there over New Year. Often see these below the chairlift in Champoussin

BTW, I don't know if people have spotted it, but Avoriaz and the PDS have released a couple of good iPhone apps. The apps contain pistes maps and can show the status of lifts and give lift opening and closing times (although the latter requires a data connection).
They will also show you where you are - which is useful for if (like me a few years ago) you need to summon help and realise that you don't know the names of pistes.
Recommended.
