Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

My opinion was that the reds and blues lower down were ok early in the day but to avoid skiing what was essentially mush beyond lunch, you had to head high.

PhillipStanton, SAID "Slopes are generally in very good condition and (to disagree with bigtoe a little) I thought that what we skied on was showing remarkably little signs of wear".

Sorry I was in a rush to get out and re-reading it (and noticing so many spelliing mistakes) I did fail to mention the piste guys where busy scouping up lots of snow from the sides under the Charnize Express ready to dump on the pistes once the hoordes of skiers had gone . The thinning I experianced was only in a few places but mainly on one piste through the trees from Nyon area to Charnize Express which may have been the bottom of Fruex.Took quite a few chunks out of my new Volkl's. This was one of our last runs on Friday as we decided to finish the day at Nyon area going up and down the Aigle Rouge. On the whole it was holding very well just a few places that i am sure would have been sorted that night.

By the way be carefull whilst sitting out side the resturant at the top of Nyon in the deck chairs, a couple of out of control skiers coming down the decidely hard piste of Lavouet took out quite a few skies and the deck chair next to my son.

Have a good time if your heading out that way soon. Very Happy

Very kind of you to clarify bigtoe although really no need - one man's thinning is another man's lush and verdant! You ask my dad - who describes his hair thus!

Anyway, I'm afraid to report that you were right (will report properly soon...).

I saw someone similarly take out the restaurant's (rather large) Alasatian dog. They won't be doing that again wink

PhillipStanton, Was it the Alsation I saw with a blue shoe kind of thing on its paw?

Funny thing is that my son was actually going to use that deck chair and it was only for the fact it had dog hairs on it he decided to sit next else where!

If was a young-ish Alsatian then that'll be the one. The restaurant is one of our "hot chocolate" stops with the kids because they love the dog.

I am here and have to report some excellent skiing interspersed with some slush surfing and ice patches opening up lower down.

Having said this higher up is holding up albeit rather hard!

Hats off to the pisteurs for an ecellent job patching and snow harvesting to keep it good.

Very warm and sunny no need for summer hols this year will get fab tan here.

Must again say we are at Le viking at 1550 metres only going low as little as possible really only to link in with Nyon and Les Gets. Top of Chavannes still good. Skied Rainfolly - good too.

Need snow soon....real soon! SHould be ok for rest of week for us!

So in total 65.7cm at different altitudes. NOT as you imply a dump of 65.7cm

Basically you are looking at 10cm at 1600m and 8cm at 1800m if the forecast is correct!

stewart woodward, Actually I think the altitudes reflect the varying freezing level so Metcheck is indeed forecasting 65.7cm which is consistent with other current forecasts. Although 65.7cm over five days is hardly a big dump, it still looks like good news to me! snowHead

Today - hot. Darned hot.

Hit Chamossiere with our "All Mountain" group early and had a good run down both the black (pisted) and the red. They've done an excellent job of repairing Nyon and all the runs were in good condition.

Most of us decided that a lost afternoon in bar was preferable to the chaos on the slopes in the afternoon. We are, after all, only trainee professionals rolling eyes

Surely that's wrong? It's snowing down to those levels and falling as rain lower than the named altitude (hence the [rain in resort/snow in resort] part) - so 1800m will see approx 65cm. A rough guesstimation says that 1200m~ will get 30cm~.

PhillipStanton, and everyone else,

I'd just like to say thank you for all the information and advice on this forum. We're heading out to Morzine on Saturday and we can't wait. I just have a couple of questions for you locals if that's ok.

We arrive lunchtime (ish) on Saturday - where would be a good place to go for a few hours that afternoon to find our 'ski-legs' (we're once a year skiiers). Would that be affected if any of this new snowfall does arrive?

Looking towards later in the week, how long will it take to get to Chatel, and how? (I guess Super Morzine, but then get a bit confused...). Is it worth heading this way, or are we better sticking to Pleney/Gets/Avoriaz bowl?

Finally, my wife has yet to get her lift pass and hire skis. Shall we do it through Inghams on the bus on the way in or will it be cheaper in resort? (The rest of us have PDS passes and skis hired already).

Any info/advice would be much appreciated; maybe we'll bump into some of you next week!

Very Happy

It's due to snow a lot this coming weekend at the higher and middle altitudes but it looks like it's going to come down as rain in the village. Avoriaz should be pretty special with continual snow falling from Saturday to Monday, about 10cm a day.

I think that, like always, much depends on the state of the snow and the number of people on it. It would be very possible to be hit by someone falling from above, even if you can ski it OK yourself, and it is a slope that claims some serious casualties. If it was icy and crowded I'd definitely give it a miss, and enjoy the ride down on the chairlift. But if the snow's nice, and it's not too busy.... however, all French resorts will be pretty busy till the end of the school hols on 10 March.

Personally, I'd just head up Pleney and do a few runs down Pistes B and D down to the Mouilles chair and back up. They look after those pistes as a priority, so they'll be fine. If you want a red or black then just head down the red / blacks leading down to Mouilles and Atray.

It depends whether you mean Chatel proper or the Plaine Dranse / Linga sector of Chatel.

Chatel proper isn't looking too good - although Snowmonkey will hopefully provide an update soon.

The Plaine Dranse / Linga sector is highly recommended. To get there go:

- up Super Morzine bubble
- up Zore chair
- right off the Zore chair and follow the obvious run, staying left
- up ProClou
- straight on / right off the ProClou chair (around 2 o'clock as you come off the chair
- down the blue road until you get to the busy junction (you'll know it when you get there) - either right or straight on
- up the Chaux Fleurie chair
- drop over the ridge in front of you

Picked up my season pass this morning and then got the bus from the chalet up to prodains - forgot it was so much hard work compared to supermorzine Confused

First thing I noticed today is how amazingly hectic it was compared to Canada! Being there for a week made me forget the small child slalom Shocked. Going to take my snowblades out tomorrow, I actually think they might be safer since it's much easier to dodge quicker on those Smile

Went up a bit, then across and down some uber-mogul thing (I have no idea how to ski moguls, especially ones that might sink the titantic should they ever escape to the ocean), then down into Switzerland which was an experience. I managed to go head over heels twice crossing my skis in ugly turns and sprain the bottom of my foot (which i'm hoping will be alright tomorrow) - any tips for skiing in the slushy/icy mud based snow without dying? I'm knackered!

If anyone's out and about in either Morzine or Avoriaz (assuming my foot works tomorrow) lemme know snowHead
