Absolutely agree @Cacciatore and also thanks to @munich_irish for the local German/Bavarian information!
I feel very fortunate to have been able to make it out to Austria. Hopefully these additional restrictions won't last too long.

@beano, yes I think Feb is certainly the choice of many. I’ve had some great powder days in March and January so it’s hard for me to decide which is best. |
Every month has its pluses, i especially love March for the long days and the sun, April post Easter on the Kitszteinhorn can be spectacular and often like having own private mountain.
Lets hope things settle down and we can all get some turns in this year!

So if what has been strongly suggested comes to pass:
Are arrivals from the UK before the 24th free to travel, ski, etc.?
One hopes so but probably too early to say?

Given that folk are, at times, quite stressed/puzzled/anxious (understandably) about their planned holidays, the ‘locals’ are giving time freely and helpfully to try and clarify an ever changing picture, never mind their regular jobs/interests and daily life.

That actually made me smile for the first time today...
Although the irony is that I'd actually got a very very nice deal on my package to Kaprun, and it would probably have been my cheapest ever ski holiday. C'est la vie, as they say over in another place already shut to us Brits...
And just to add in my own thanks, even if the information I've received hasn't been what I really wanted to hear!

If Omicron spreads as quickly as some experts forecast then it will be the dominant variant everywhere very soon. And the virus variant areas get downgraded to high risk areas again. This happened in the summer with delta so I’m hopeful that our February skiing trip can go ahead!

Tricky. The relatively new minister is from the junior coalition partner (Green Party) in the government. I wonder what the OVP leader and party will make of this. It’s possible there may be some politics at play. Or possibly softening up the population for an anticipated further lockdown. Who knows.
The daily infection rate figures are again down.
Vorarlberg and Tirol remain at the higher end of National figures on infection rates per 100,000 over the last 7 days.

TT has an update on the "travel ban" suggestion. https://liveblog.tt.com/414/coronavirus/114908/muckstein-bei-omikron-zeit-gewinnen-novavax-kommt-ende-janner . I havent seen all the details but from the brief comments it does seem as if the "ban" is not set in stone. The Health Minister's words were "Das ist eine Möglichkeit" ie that is one possibility. There is a committee of experts who are going to report tomorrow. I guess there is ample room for behind the scenes politicking, a la Boris Johnson, as some of the main tourist areas ie Tirol & Vorarlberg will be very much against. Maybe something short of a ban such as only booster + test is also a "possibility"

It’s the hope that kills you…
Due to fly on 31st December 2021 for our delayed Christmas 2020 holiday to Hinterglemm.
I’m starting to think that Crossrail may be open before I get to travel again!
First world problems I know but I’m still gutted by this (possible? Probable?) update to the rules.
2023 anyone?

The way the media are ramping up the hysteria in the UK, the chances are that travel will be banned around new year/early Jan anyway.

Given the delay between getting infected, developing symptoms, getting tested, result of test, and that result getting reported in daily figures, I'd say Omicron already dominant in every European country. Travel bans are same mistakes all over again. If you don't want people to travel, issue advisory. Close ski lifts

Just take a deep breath and count to ten. There's no point in trying to second guess our political class. We're just hoping that things come good. Confident that Number 1 son will have a flight back to UK on 27th Dec but not so sure that Jet 2 will be flying on 8th Jan to return Number 2 son. At least he can nip up to Munich and get a Lufthansa flight back to UK. That said, and I quote, "If Uni goes online and I can't play rugby then I'm f**king staying here." I think he gets his diction from Mother.

A bit more https://www.tt.com/artikel/30808894/einreise-aus-grossbritannien-niederlande-und-co-ab-freitag-deutlich-erschwert , Google translate is average but it is understandable. Basic summary is that, there has been concern expressed about the plane loads of British tourists turning up (reflected in various comments above) amongst other things. Some of the public health people want an effective travel ban but others, especially from the ÖVP (party of the Chancellor and also Tirolean First Minister) are against, suggesting that a wait and see approach is better as the new measures were only introduced a few days ago.

A friend of mine was planning to fly to Munich on 28th Dec where I would have met him to take him on to Tyrol. Being a very careful sort of chap, he asked the Border Police in Munich if this was allowed. Their answer was “No”, more exactly:
“Referring to your request, a transit from Munich Airport by car to Austria is NOT possible due to the current restrictions.
Only transit by plane is currently possible.”
I presume that means transit within the airport building.
I have another friend who is planning to fly to Munich tomorrow! His only advantage is that he has a long-term rental on an apartment over here. We shall see whether that gets him onto the flight and through Germany.
What a pain this pandemic is!

you will no get a UK GP to sign this...unless someone knows different. my wife is a GP an I am a manager in a GP surgery. its not something we do. all surgeries I have found with something on their website have stated that you need to ring 119 or look online at the gov website. all roads appear to point to the NHS proof of infection app |
Print it off….put it in an envelope with clear instructions to your doctor and ask.
Sitting in Austria using it for my daughter…nothing can be assumed in the covid world.

This link (provided by the Border Police in Munich) is one of the most comprehensive summaries of the current restrictions I have come across.
There was another useful link also given but this one (with really much the same information) is in German.

@2waterford, the announcements in Germany this evening have no implications for visitors or transiting visitors (unless you were planning on coming to see the New Year fireworks)
@espri, if your friend has Austrian residency I suspect he might be OK, though the challenge will be being allowed on the plane in the first place.

One of my sons has his vaccinations AND his recovery "certificate" listed on his NHS COVID Travel pass. He went on the NHS Website, logged in, requested a Travel Pass and it lists his innoculations, Positive test (Oct 21) and the recovery. The recovery entry also has a QR Code which is accepted on the Austrian Scanners. I'm not sure why others are having so many problems.
