Having read the Tiroler Tageszeitung report, I'm poised to invoke the free cancellation bookings etc for our trip on January 5.
Switzerland anyone?

Surely that depends on how long it lasts? It may turn out just like the UK did with southern Africa - a short-term measure to buy a few extra weeks to significantly increase vaccination / booster levels.

@ecureuil, True, though it will still likely cover Christmas and New Year.
@LOTA, I definitely would never do anything based on what the TT say! Wait for something more concrete.

Oh my days!!! Doesn’t affect me as I’ve got to stay home and work for all of Jan anyway as got all sorts to pay for but bloody hell it’s one thing after another!
Hope that news in TT is incorrect because like others have said it kills some of the season off more or less, certainly one of the main bits anyway.
They’ve only had the new arrangements 5 mins so why don’t they just see how it goes first with everyone here wearing their masks and having negative tests for entry etc. What more is there than can be done? I don’t know where you draw the line with it all. It’s like they don’t give it a chance to see what happens before they bring something else in

I'd take Italy over Switzerland I think... unless they have more restrictions coming I've not spotted...

I cant see any grounds for optimism that the TT report is not true. It covers not just the UK but Holland, Denmark & Norway (which makes sense if you are going follow this route, Ireland cant be far behind). Germany is also likely to introduce much more restrictive regulations. The Austrian's generally follow what the RKI do (even if they hate the suggestion that they follow anything coming out from Berlin!) so no surprise about the rules on travel and also no surprise if more restrictions are to be introduced. The only minor ray of light I can see is that if the evidence shows things are not as bad as feared then there will be more pressure to lift the restriction quickly with a number of EU countries on the list rather than just the UK.

@VolklAttivaS5, yes, exactly. The head of the Tirolean WKO (commerce) was in the press this morning saying the same thing, that we've only just lifted one lockdown and people are already discussing the next one! It's madness.
Austria has admitted today that they don't have the first idea how dominant omicron is in the country, as apart from Vienna, PCR sequencing has fallen on its ar5e, so its likely that any travel bans are pretty pointless anyway, as many have already said.

might just go to bulgaria as they appear to have much more straightforward rules - double vaxed OR PCR OR recovery. this is logical and sensible and makes medical sense !

@mo66, It pretty much puts paid to the Tirol ski season full stop! It certainly won't be a popular move – German visitors are already struggling with rules for kids, and this announcement (if true) knocks out the Brits, Dutch and Scandis – i.e. most of the rest of the tourists. A lockdown by stealth for the hotel industry, but without any requirement for compensation |
Is there a list of countries on this list, are the Irish on it. Thank You

Its possible for a year or two until vaccines, boosters, herd immunity, mutation to less virulent forms etc render it a minor inconvenience like the flu / common cold.
It does seem to get worse in winter and ease off in summer
Regarding Austria, a neighbour and his mate went to Mayhofen yday as the restrictions there have eased. He reports slopes are empty and the snow seemed adequate from the photo.

Yes I was thinking that maybe after a couple of winters they will then see, for now at least I guess it’s the fear of the unknown etc.
The way to do this skiing lark if you can is what I did in Jan 2019, go for 3 months and don’t go home! It’s the to-ing and fro-ing from the UK and back again that makes it more difficult.
Mind you, when there’s hardly any tourists here due to bans etc do they then close half the lifts because of cost/reduced traffic so you don’t get the full experience anyway! Even if you can manage to get here and stay here 2-3 months would it be the same….

For the Spar free PCR tests you have to download an app and register which apparently takes 5 minutes then you’re entitled to take 3 tests per week. I didn’t bother as I’ve got plenty of time so I don’t know if that registration presents any difficulties or is all in German but it seems like it will be straightforward.
Pistes are nicely groomed but pretty hard due to the low temperatures.

If you’re already here you’ll know it’s great, if not and you’re not landing in Austria you’re probably screwed.
Hopefully there is a sensible position arrived that takes care of the local public health and economic position but I can’t really see it as politicians from across Europe are descending into panic.

Great Thats about 80% of the bookings I have for Jan and Feb likely gone. Add in the cancellation for New Year I had last night from an Irish group, the winter season is pretty much buggered.
God help all the hoteliers, bar owners etc as even with the support from the government last winter was a nightmare.

Yes our Pension have just rang UK, Holland, Norway and Denmark all on Red List, Ireland not yet but who knows what tomorrow will bring, also worried Germany will change entry requirements and testing again, even though there isn’t a travel ban I feel Governments don’t want us travelling.

Pooh! I just booked last night to come to Austria on the 27th. Being double jabbed and boostered, and with the rules only changing on Monday, I thought we would be able to travel. Oh well, at least our travel agent should cover things.

You could apply for assistance based on your previous years tourist income, I didn't bother as there were plenty of others who need the help more than me, though my friend who has a cleaning business that services apartments as well as offices etc found it very hard to get anything

Intrestingly I was full for Jan and Feb this year for the first time since about 2014 but very quiet for March so who knows. Fingers crossed I can get out with my family as it will be 2 years at the end Feb since I have seen my apartment.

So sorry to all all that have businesses or trips booked to Austria. We flew back from Innsbruck last night instead of from Munich today. 8 people on the flight. OBB staff on the platform at Jenbach were checking for negative tests for those travelling to Italy, if you've been in the UK within the last 10 days you need a negative PCR test to enter Germany- we decided not to take the risk on that as only had our lat flow tests to rely on.

If it’s not been acknowledged before, I’d like to say a particular thanks to some of the Austrian ‘locals’ who’ve been doing their excellent best in keeping folk informed and answering questions (often very repetitiously) regarding some of the complex and oft changing rules for entry to Austria.
Given that folk are, at times, quite stressed/puzzled/anxious (understandably) about their planned holidays, the ‘locals’ are giving time freely and helpfully to try and clarify an ever changing picture, never mind their regular jobs/interests and daily life.
@Chris_n, @Scarlet, @RedandWhiteFlachau, @DB, for example. And apologies if I’ve missed anyone
