Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

What is the current situation regarding travel to Austria

I’m not sure if this is useful or not but I’ve just picked up my lift pass. Vaccination status was checked and she looked at the 3rd jab and then the 2nd on my phone. The 3rd was on Monday so 6 days ago and the 2nd was back in June.

@andybomb1, thanks, that's useful. My first vaccination was part of the covishield batch (though it doesn't say covishield on the app). I've got three jabs but I've given up trying to determine whether the second two jabs negate the first! I'd just uploaded a Green Pass app (though I don't believe that its the official app, which is in German and I can't find on the Apple store) and I got a green tick, but its good to hear what's happening on the ground.

@Manning18, Why not just get the booster then you have nothing to worry about.

We're a tad behind the UK in booster rollout @chick . 40-49 rollout is this week so we'll likely be called first week in January. Trip starts Dec 28th

On current guidelines, will they be checking for a PCR test on transit (train) from Munich to Austria? We're double vax'd but no booster, and coming from Dublin so don't need one to enter Germany but concerned about entering Austria thereafter

I took the train from Germany to Austria yesterday. They were specifically checking vaccination status and for PCR tests as the train was going through to Italy.

I have a Lufthansa flight from Manchester to Munich on the 1st January. My intention was to travel by train to Zell am See then bus to Saalbach. Waiting now to see if transit is allowed under the new German requirements. If it is only airport/ airside transit that is allowed then I may rebook that flight to go to Salzburg via Frankfurt.
Luckily ( dir to earlier plans changing) I also have a direct flight from Leeds to Salzburg booked for the 3rd January. For my January trip I’m due to return from Salzburg on the 22nd January.
Still hopeful Very Happy

That Leeds to Salzburg flight is better isn’t it even though it’s 2 days later?

@VolklAttiva, please do report back once you’ve (hopefully) travelled back via Munich as that’s what we’re planning to do a few days later! When I read the rules this morning I concluded transit is fine as long as you minimise the amount of time spent in Germany. But we’ll see!

I’d be surprised if I’m not allowed to get back the way I came. It is as booked after all before this newest thing came out so it’s only fair I get to go back as planned. Like I said I’m expecting a flight change maybe so they can get everyone on the same plane or same couple of planes but I’m not anticipating a blatant cancellation. I’ve eyed up a flight from Innsbruck back to Gatwick if desperate and can get the train to Heathrow then where my van is parked.

@Tiefschneetaucher, where are you skiing again?
Edit-oh I’ve just looked back a few pages, Obertauern.

Yes the pistes are in great condition here but there’s no off piste going as it’s sun affected. Could do with another good 40-50cm snow again soon to cover over the frosty tracks.

Hopefully I won’t have to mess about because I’ve got the ‘up to 2 day’ PCR booked at Heathrow through Express Test so I don’t really want to fly to Gatwick instead then train it to Heathrow as I’ve already paid £69 for the PCR test at a certain time.

I see at Munich Airport they do express PCR tests back in 30 mins. I suppose they (UK Government) are thinking someone could catch it on the plane home though so that’s why they want you to do it on or within 2 days of arrival.

Interestingly, a friend of mine who is in Champoluc at the moment, one of his friends went home a bit earlier than the rest and did the lateral flow test 48 hours before his flight which was negative. He did the PCR when he got home and it was positive so it’s isolation for him over Christmas. At home though at least! He thinks he must have picked it up at Turin Airport because none of the others left in Champoluc have got it (at the moment) they did a test to check.

Yes the direct to Salzburg route is probably better. I was planning to leave all my kit in Austria during my now cancelled December trip. The Leeds flight is hand luggage only - I’ll have to purchase hold luggage. Probably not take skis and then buy in Austria, it’s a 3 week trip so a couple of days missed is ok.

Hey Buddy - I think the two day test is to be taken on the second day of arrival back into the UK - not 'within' two days. Happy to be corrected if wrong. Madeye-Smiley

@Gilby, you can take it as soon as you’re off the plane and on UK soil or anytime up to 48 hours after you land in the UK. Most people do it as soon as physically possible because then the result is back quicker too, especially just before Christmas. But you can’t do it before getting on the plane in Munich for example.

Another way of getting it done quickly would be leaving the already pre bought PCR test in your vehicle at the airport car park, then doing it within your vehicle, then putting it in a drop box like Randox offer on the way home somewhere. I opted not to do anything involving posting it back using Royal Mail because of the time of year so for me an on site walk in/drive in airport offering seemed the quickest way of doing it.

I want the negative result back by 10pm the next day (24th) which is what Express Tests offer so that way I should have it back by Christmas Day lunchtime ready to depart for my sprouts and turkey at my Mum and Dad’s house.
If it’s positive well I will have to stay in and go without!
If I don’t get the result back in time they will save me a plate of it to have Boxing Day Laughing Laughing

@Gilby, thanks. The sprouts were accidentally missing last year so I’m hoping I’m getting them this year.
I’ve just done a lateral flow to see where the land lies before I do my official one on Tuesday (48 hours before departure). Negative.

Happy to report back if I'm the first.

I've read the rules and as far I can work out I'm ok the transit via Germany to get home.

Skiing in Schladming is excellent, some challenging runs though.

That was quick, I will look at them for next time if I am in a hurry! I think when I checked it out for this time what put me off was it was based at Sofitel T5 and so I’d have to fetch my van then drive there and they charge for parking at Sofitel even if it’s half an hour. Take it you arrived at T5 and walked there so no parking there first?

Re the spit volume, next time you do it imagine you’re going to eat a handful of salty peanuts a few minutes beforehand and you will have enough spit. Try it! It works Laughing (Pavlovian response)

Thanks to all the contributors so far on this thread. Whether they have been optimistic or not they have been helpful and considered despite some confusing official messaging from Germany and the appetite of UK news to portray entry into Germany as a complete no go.

I've read them all with interest but wonder there is a forum consensus or better still proof (perhaps a snowhead is soon to be that 'pudding' (no offence) but did we ever get to the bottom of the ability of UK travellers transiting by train from Munich airport to Austria?

Also did the 900pm Austrian announcement take place?

all this talk of PCR testing is throwing up an area of concern for us....where do e stand with someone who currently has covid and will potentially be travelling i a couple of week. they cant do a PCR test for 90 days as it could show as positive as antibodies stay in your system for a long time. so how does this affect the austrian requirements for pcr and the within-2-days test when you come home

@backhojo, My understanding is that while testing positive weeks,/months after infection can happen, it is unusual. See if you can get a PCR test soon for this individual just to see if they are still testing positive and if not, you can relax a bit
