@sussexmartlet, You need your pre-flight Antigen Test AND your Day 2 PCR Test on return. Cheapest I've found for both is here: https://covid.randox.com/travelling-to-the-uk/ Leave the PCR at home and bring the Antigen Test with you, it will save you hunting around for a test in Austria. Simples. Might want to bring a few NHS freebie ones to do a pre-test with. I'll say no more. |
Thank you so much for your help. Sorry to be naive but if you take NHS tests with you to pre test with what’s the advantage?

Yes, antigen is fine. You can get them free from govt testing centres or for 25€ in pharmacies. Where/how you're traveling will probably determine which is easier for you. |

That should be easy enough then, although for some reason, no govt test centres in Innsbruck are showing up any more tiroltestet.at is the link if they reappear (only works in Austria). Otherwise, there are plenty of pharmacies, and I think there might still be test centres in the bigger shopping centres. Your hotel should be able to help, or ask in the tourist office.

I live in Vorarlberg (the bit of Austria that borders Switzerland, Liechtenstein & Germany). I can confirm what others have said..there are no immediate apparent plans to clamp down on British visitors. Rather the focus here is internal - on getting as many as possible Voralbergers vaccinated. Meanwhile tourists mainly from Germany)have begun to appear for the first time in many months & it is hoped the hospitality sector will return to something halfway normal..

Exactly my experience here, too (Upper Austria). The focus is on getting more people vaccinated, sticking to 2G and getting hospitality back up and running. We exit lockdown tomorrow and there seems to be a sense of positivity around to get on with the season.

In Zillertal Arena today. It’s noticeably busier today than the last few days probably because today is the proper opening day here, there was limited lift opening in Zell am Ziller the past few days so I went elsewhere.
Now it feels like a normal pre Xmas week. Lovely day too!

The ability for 12-15s to come to Austria nationwide has been announced at a press conference this morning, from Tiroler Tagezeitung
Quote: |
The “Ninja Pass” is now a tried and tested corona test pass for schoolchildren in Austria. The tests are taken in the school, the pass is valid as proof of entry for all areas where children and young people are required to present a negative test result.
▶ ️ Now it is being expanded as a “Holiday Ninja Pass” as well as proof of school-free time - both for Austrian school-age young people and for school-age holiday guests from abroad aged 12 to 15 years .
▶ ️ Tourism Minister Elisabeth Köstinger said in the press conference on the Ninja Pass during the holidays:
“The 2G rule currently applies in Austria, which requires proof of proof from all persons over the age of 12. However, this requirement cannot be met for all families from abroad, as different vaccination rules apply in other countries and many young people are not or only partially vaccinated. Under these conditions, many would have decided against a winter holiday in Austria. With the Holiday-Ninja-Pass, an officially recognized 2G certificate in Austria can be provided even without a complete vaccination or proof of recovery. "
▶ ️ The Holiday Ninja Pass is equivalent to 2G proof if:
Valid negative test evidence is always available from day 1 to day 5;
basically at least 2 tests of which are PCR tests;
All official test certificates are attached to the Holiday Ninja Pass in paper form or digitally and a valid photo ID is carried. |

@VolklAttivaS5, it certainly is.
In the same vein as your other post I have seen a lot more foreign cars this morning, mainly German but a few Dutch an Czech. Actually feels like the start of the season now.

Hi there, I'm hoping some of you wise ones may be able to give me an answer. We cancelled France and have te booked Austria for 27th Dec. I have a double vaccinated teenager, and she is linked on my NHS profile so her vaccinations show there. Will this be accepted to fly or will it need to be the covid travel letter (which hasn't arrived yet)? Thank you!

Yes I think a lot just waited for stuff to open fully, I didn’t mind coming out a bit earlier as I had a few lie ins this week and just skied the afternoons. All very nice but I got up at the right time this morning to get stuck in! Also I wanted to get here on 13th just in case the wheels fell off!
Just having an early lunch in Konigsleiten now and it’s nice to see other people about properly.

@GillB, only the airline will be able to answer that. Best give them a call and report back in case others are inthe same situation

You know it makes sense.
|
@GillB, I’d have thought so but best to ask the airline in case you get a check in desk numpty who doesn’t know the rules or misinterprets them.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but it looks as if Germany is going to classify the UK as an "area of variant of concern" which if it does happen would (as I understand it happy to be proved wrong) effectively ban travel through Germany for anyone who has been in the UK for the previous 10 days. If (still an if) this does get announced later today there would be at least 24 hours before the ban comes into effect.
I will try to find a link to the news.

Just landed at Salzburg from Manchester via Frankfurt.
No issues with travel whatsoever.
Passports only to enter Schengen at Frankfurt, then 2 border guards at Salzburg scanning vaccine certificate. Had a printed one from NHS, much easier than phone faff.

@VolklAttivaS5, It might affect your trip home if you left the UK less than 10 days ago as you would not be allowed to travel through Germany until the 10 days are up. I might have got the detail wrong and it has NOT been officially announced and might not be so you do need to keep an eye out for any official announcement.

The current rule for virus variant areas says that you don’t have to quarantine if you are only transiting through Germany. I’m not sure if that’s true for people without a German passport though.

From the German Foreign Office site
Quote: |
A travel ban is in place for countries with widespread occurrence of SARS-CoV-2 virus variants of concern (referred to as areas of variant of concern). Transport companies, e.g. air carriers and railway companies, may not transport any persons from these countries to Germany. There are only a few, strictly defined exceptions to this travel ban, namely for:
German citizens and persons who are resident in Germany with a current right to reside in the country, as well as their spouses, partners living in the same household and minor children
Persons catching a connecting flight who do not leave the transit zone of a passenger airport and
Few other special cases. |
Again to stress this is based on media reports NOT an official announcement. However if true that would mean flying in to Munich and then travelling onto Austria by whatever means would not be allowed for non German residents though a connecting flight say Salzburg via Frankfurt would be allowed. Neither would driving through Germany be allowed assuming you can get across the Channel.

@Tiefschneetaucher, I hope you are right, given that this variant is everywhere it makes little sense to single out the UK, why not Denmark or Norway too? However the report linked to above suggested sources in the federal health ministry in Berlin not some CSU bod taking a pop at the new "Prussian" government

@gresty, again to stress we are only talking about media "reports" so this might not happen. However if it does the rules seem pretty clear, no entry into Germany for non German residents who have been in the UK in any of the preceding 10 days. Whether anyone would check travellers from Austria is doubtful but would you be able to get a flight back, I dont know.

@munich_irish, even if I’d been here for 7 days not 10 you’d think you’d be able to leave to go home to the UK, it would just be transiting after all. They don’t even stop on the way back to Munich.
Luckily though it sounds like whatever happens I will be alright (assuming negative lateral flow test)

I guess I could always get a one-way flight to the UK from Austria. Only problem would be, what to do with the Munich hire car.
Keeping a close eye on the news over the next few hours. This is the official communication as far as I can tell - https://www.rki.de/DE/Content/InfAZ/N/Neuartiges_Coronavirus/Risikogebiete_neu.html
Usually updates on a Friday.

I’d say it would be unreasonable not to be able to take your hire car back to Munich and fly home to the UK. After all you weren’t to know the rules would change (assuming the media reports come true) so I think you should be able to complete your trip to go home.

Had to queue for the first time to get the gondola down from Zell am Ziller as you can’t ski to the bottom at the moment. There is snow down to the bottom just about but the piste is closed and unprepared.
Everyone in the queue had their masks on, I saw one with a vented mask and one ‘nose dangler’. Everyone else had the proper job.
The two apres ski bars at the bottom (Krocha Alm and Saustall) are open with the usual music but everyone is sat down more or less and both have open sides so not a completely enclosed space.
This morning you could tell people hadn’t been skiing for a while as there were people trying to go up a downhill escalator and fell off it. For some reason both staircases were going down even though it said ‘entry’ and they still are!

@gresty, Agree that it is looking hopeful as there has been no update to the RKI site, generally the changes have been published mid afternoon. However the move to put southern African countries was published at 20:15 so too early to breath easier just yet.
