Christmas normally quiet, as all the French tend to stay at home. New Year a little busier but nothing like February.

You know it makes sense.

My experience of New Year (in Zermatt) is that although the town is rammed full of revelling and boozing, and you can't get a place in a cafe for love or money, there is in fact nobody doing any skiing.

What are conditions like today? How is the off-piste (other than "dangerous" - seems like avi warning is 4/5)?
I am very seriously considering another "early Christmas present" trip this weekend, but guess I will need to book flights within the next couple of hours.

boardiac, if it's any help I asked Alpine Logic about off piste guiding for this weekend and the response was "nothing to offer this weekend off piste. Avalanche risk is 4 out of 5 with lots of wind driven snow and little consolidation."

bordiac, you'd have to be very careful off piste at the moment, there are loads of wind loaded slopes about, and many spontaneous avalanches. We saw quite a few fissures where slabs were ready to slide (and amazingly a few misguided individuals skiing right over them- very lucky people!). The off piste is in general so wind affected that it's not really worth the risk just now. Having said that, we got some nice snow between the trees above val d'isere today, but we were with snoworks' nick, who knows what he's doing.
Going home tomorrow, thanks to everyone for all of the nice feedback on the pictures/reports etc.

Avalanche level 3 today, vis is ok/good. Some off piste was looking a bit iffy on the way down yesterday afternoon and saw one small slide. Pretty much everyone I've spoken to isn't bothering today.

ewanmalone, I haven't seen it moving since I've been here and certainly not today but plenty open and another lovely bluebird today.
Getting colder and a front moving in!

ewanmalone, They will work hard to get it fixed for the Christmas trade, but has taken weeks in the past seasons.

Heading out to tignes tomorrow and wondering if the lifts up from Brévières are working. The web cam shows the pistes down are bashed and people are skiing down, but can you get back up without the use of a bus?
Cheers

Avy risk down to 3 today and the off-piste has consolidated a bit, though a lot of the slopes still *look* scarily full of cracks and unstable, even if they're not. Had a great morning of fresh tracks off the back of Bellevarde, Toviere and Solaise.

Last week was epic in Tignes. From green grass to knee/thigh deep powder in 3 days:D
This morning we have light snow, with heavier snow forecast during the day, so hopefully another epic week.
The draw/pull wire is back on the cable car so hopefully it will be working again once the safety checks have been carried out.

in the end decided against it. snow-forecast says 81 cm in total for Tignes (at 2506) by Saturday. the Xmas etc seems like it will be epic.

Started snowing around 8 this morning and still going strong. 5-10 cm in at 2000. Really good conditions at the minute with nearly everything open. Looking good for the rest of the week

In EK (staying in VDI) 19-26th. Poss longer. Any local view on what is going to happen on Friday. Wrecking of lower slopes by rain or a mega-dump. Assuming its going to be a piste week as the off-piste is likely to be every unstable and dangerous.

Torrential rain all the way to Geneva airport this morning that storm coming in is a biggggg one!
As harryt, says the snowback looks really dodgy so lots of caution needed over the next few days but anyone coming out is in for a treat.
Quick note of caution RE: La Banque Postale cash machine in Val Claret. Six of us got 'stung' by this on Friday, One of our crew requested EUR300 and got 150 even though receipt showed EUR300 and this was confirmed by his own back. Nothing we could do there until our return but I wouldn't use it again!

Ta for that
Due to leave EK on 26/12. Booked in Chalet in Meribel 30/12 and Les Menuires on 7/1. Don't want to come back to UK for 3 days. Any ideas for local accom. Assume can travel down to Moutiers on 30/12 and get up to Meribel by bus.

The Sache gondola from Brevieres hasn't opened yet so you take the chair up to Boisses, then the Boisses gondola, then the chair up to the Aiguille Rouge. The last 2 close at 1630 prompt.
The bus from Tignes 1800 and Boisses only runs a very skeleton service at the mo.
Might all change from next Saturday Dec 17.
No resort bus from Brevieres to the rest of Tignes.

Just had a look at the snow-forecast.com 9-day forecast. They are forecasting a warm front moving in next Wed/Thur with freezing levels moving up to 3200-3300m. I hope they are wrong. It could spoil the Xmas week we are due out there...

Sounds fantastic, I arrive at Brevieres mid Jan should be great by then and the holiday crowds should have gone.
Have not skied in Tignes for years, can't wait.
