Neilski, agree with Lou, that much easier to get PDS for the whole six days and then no faffing about having to upgrade.

Can anyone report on the snow quality up at Avoriaz, is it still fairly good on the higher pistes?

I have been this time of year twice and snow has been outstanding.... that is not to say this year will be. I have 2.5 week to go so am hopeful of some fresh stuff before then. I think these threads are great but I am starting to wonder if they are doing me any good, you look forward to it all year so as the weeks approach you find yourself checking the reports every half an hour, if the snow was generally good I wouldnt bother until a few days before. I think we are all stressing about nothing, there will be loads to do when we get there.

Skied Linderats, Plaine Dranse, Linga, Les Crossets and Fornet today.
The snow is generally holding up well considering it hasn't really snowed since my last visit two weeks ago. There was even snow nice chopped up snow in the Fornet bowl late afternoon.
Most of the off-piste, though, is bullet-proof and to be avoided.
Pistes can best be described as "Firm. With a hint of underlying menace."
It was chuffing freezing today. The coldest most of us has been for a few seasons.
Do be careful of frostnip and frostbite. It's so easy to ignore cold toes, but do stop and visibly check them every now and again. My "mildly chilly" big toes were actually suffering from frostnip, which took a good 15 minutes to sort out. Someone else in the group also had frostnipped toes.

Thanks for the reports guys, heading out in a weeks time! My otherhalf has snowboard lessons at the top of the Pleney cabin for the first 4 mornings so I'm hoping the runs down there remain open and in a half decent condition

We have arrived back in Les Gets today after being in Montgenevre for a week - great time there - while friends have had our chalet with a bunch of their chums - we have been really worried about what sort of time they would have had after reading doom and gloom reports - but friends still with us (cooking supper as I type) and for another week and they have been out every day, and have had a really good time and enjoyed the sun.

Just back after 3 days in Morzine. Spent two of the days around Avoriaz and one near Les Gets. For anyone going out in the next few days do not concern yourself with some of the posts on this thread. Yes snow is more limited and there are icy patches but there is plenty on piste for most people, and the snow on Friday night on Avoriaz gave powder higher up. And it snowed quite heavily on the Swiss side on Saturday morning - I was in the middle of it. As long as the temperatures stay low all should be ok.

Just to say that we skied over in the Flaine bowl yesterday (and a few other places we didn't intend to be because we took the wrong lift!).
It must be said that the pistes were absolutely fantastic first thing...
...but went downhill rapidly giving way to sheet ice in places.
Lots of runs not open or even pisted in the Flaine bowl - presumably because there's not enough snow cover to fill in the depressions in the runs.
On balance I'd say that the PDS is doing better.

Lot's of good skiing at Avoriaz today. Pistes still holding up very well - does seem to go down hill after 2pm where ice becomes more prominent. Not much off piste though and little snow forecast in the next week or so.

Got back late yesterday evening from 5 days in Morzine. First time there. We were pretty worried going out there due to the various reports, but there was no need to be. Plenty of snow, especially up higher and towards the Swiss side. Sure there was ice in places, but it can be avoided. We didn't encounter any piste that was anywhere near too icy to navigate down. It was extremely cold at times, particularly on the lift that takes you to the Swiss area. So wrap up well, even for that lift journey alone! All in all we were delighted with the trip. Would definitely head back.

We got back after the weekend and echo comments here. Sat morning was good high up in Avoriaz and even found some powder early on. Nothing that wasn't skiable, although by the afternoon, it did get icy in some places, and by 3pm a lot of slopes were tricky, evidenced by the number of people falling over (some very competent skiers who were simply underestimating the ice on the runs back to lifts/resort). Swiss side seemed ok too. Had one afternoon on Pleney which was fine but Avoriaz was much better. Agree you should wrap up warm. never been so cold on the Express Mossette lift!

The Espace Roc d'Enfer / La Grand Terche / St Jean d'Aulps Station or whatever you want to call it is in excellent nick, whoever is damming the piste is obviously a real artist. We skied on the weekend and we didn't ski on any ice. Even the Graydon Bowl was open and in good condition. The circuit is not open.
As far as the off-piste is concerned then on the whole I agree (avoid!) but it's not all bad, I went out yesterday and even managed some powder turns at 1600m

KSS, agree mossette lift was very cold, especially last friday. I am suprised you did not hear my mate swearing louder and louder the further up the lift we went!

We popped over to Mt Chery yesterday to just check it out and probably have a chocolat chaud at the Grande Ourse - and stayed for hours - the skiing was fabulous down the Lievre and also the Marmotte, you had to use the track round the side as the top was a bit bare - but we had the place more or less to ourselves and just delightful. And then some very good soup at the Grande Ourse to finish up with. Went back up to the top of the red egg in order to ski back home and were rather taken aback with the number of people over that side - Mt Chery had been so wonderfully quiet.

Just back from a few days in Morzine
Not bad conditions really, especially higher up
watch out for patches of ice
be circumspect about off-piste - it may look like powder from a distance but when you get on it you realise its concrete

Long shot... Anyone know anything about the ARDENTS DEBUTANTS pass?
We arrive Sunday and our chalet owner has said he's happy to drive us to the Ardent Telecabine to get a couple of hours on snow, he said we could maybe get the Ardents Debutants pass for about 18euro.
We'd be quite happy doing a blue or 2 a few times so the Parchets blue that runs under the gondola looks ideal...

snowscreen, im not sure on the conditions out there at the minute but that run from the top of that gondola down to ardent can be a nightmare in bad conditions. It is quite low down and can get icy and scrubbed so be carefull. If you get that gondola to the top then ski down to your right and get the next chair 2 man (the middle one of 3 lifts) and take that to the top and then 1 more long chairlift all the way up to the top, there is a blue run called "abricotine" which winds its way all the way down to Ardent. It is a great run and the views of the Dents Du Midi and over to Switzerland are great. The bottom of Abricotine eventually joins up with the run you mentioned and heads down into Ardent, get a beer at the bar at the bottom and sit out in the sun at the end of the day! hope this helps!

Thanks Rick, the chalet owner had suggested only the debutants pass which I'm guessing may not include those chair lifts so I'll make sure I check what I'm getting before going up in the Gondola, looking warmer for next week at times which I guess could be a slight blessing as it wont be quite as hard and icy, maybe soft and slushy somedays

Haven't skied for a couple of weeks, but managed to squeeze in a couple of hours this morning in Avoriaz and the pistes are holding up very well considering the lack of snow. Certainly icy in places, but on the whole fine.
Sharpen your edges!!

snowscreen, it's a good idea. The pistes around the top of the Ardent gondola are shady and easy, so stay in good nick (relatively)
Coming down, if the run is icy, I'd strongly suggest downriding the gondola again.
Your chalet owner is doing you a favour as Ardent is the best way into the PDS / Avoriaz area, espcially when conditions are not great. (like now)

Just got back from Chatel and agree that the pisteurs and snow makers are doing a great job. Yes, it is cold and conditions are like April first thing and stay that way, but it is perfectly skiable on piste. Oddly, lower seems to be better. Super Cahtel was a delight yesterday and I skied all the way to the town. Avoriaz is still good. You have to go like stink from time to time and try to find a patch of snow to trun in, but I have seen worse. Had a good week with plenty of good skiing. Off piste or steeps you can forget!
