Nope looking at departure and arrival codes many airports under the cloud (inc Schipphol and at least one of the Paris ones) are operational

achilles, Yep, interesting hold pattern flown by a BA flight from Calgary between Liverpool and Stoke at the moment, presumably trying to get clearance for LHR but now headed into Paris by the looks of it.

On-piste fatality rate is way higher, which I find even more interesting |
On-piste fatality is irrelavent, unless they make any claim to compare with the safety of flying in volcanic ash, as you did.

And a BA from Vancouver currently holding over the Isle of Man supposedly heading into LHR, another from San Fransisco holding over Ireland as well and one from Lagos holding over Le Harve! If I didn't know better I'd say they are waiting for clearance into Heathrow!

And one from Lagos circling over the Channel Islands too.
D'ya think they can keep circling until 1pm tomorrow when it looks as though Heathrow might be free:

Also note the big strip down Germany, Switzerland and Italy that's opening up. But it's a bit worrying that stuff is accumulating in the Atlantic when the winds are forecast to change to the South-West on Saturday and Sunday.

And now looks like the Vancouver flight is setting up for finals into Dublin
Yup, scrubbing off over 1000ft a min and down to 340kt, that one is heading into Dublin! Wonder if the other two have the go juice onboard to hold till LHR reopens in an hour!
Hhm, looks like that Vanvover might now be heading into AMS (or even back onto plan for LHR) as its now over north Wales at 25000ft

Can't help thinking the decision was made for the UK by the fact the entire of the rest of Europe seemed to have opened for business!

Shimmy Alcott, Can take some time to get an airport back open, after all need fire services, ATC, baggage handlers, engineers to turn aircraft around, cleaners, security etc. So it will take them some time to get into work and get everything flashed up again if it has been switched off for past few days.
But more importantly it looks like my girls will be winging their way home soon and I'll definetly get to be there for daughter #2's birth

ozzie skier, Excellent. But is what I dont get is why there are all these planes waiting to land in London when it shouldn't have been open at least till tomorrow judging by the info they had on take off.

Shimmy Alcott, just thinking that myself, but perhaps they have been diverted mid-flight to their original destination.

Apparantly BA was telling passengers that they would head for Heathrow and hope for clearance, taking a last minute divert to an alternative airport if required (heard from a colleague with friends coming back from Shanghai as we speak - so it could be wrong)

Shimmy Alcott, BA was probably playing a game of brinkmanship with the CAA/goverment. After all Wee Willie isn't known as being a shy retiring type when it comes to trying to get his own way. They possibly also got advance warning after all it would look pretty shabby if the first plane into LHR wasn't a BA flight.
