bertie bassett, sounds like you had fun. Soon I will be fully fit and ripping it up, but slowly does it.
For once I did as the Doc said, refused to be tempted by the powder again. I think tomorrow I will give it a go but maybe only on skis for a short time then back on the board which seems to be easier. Had a quick play just outside the door today, fun! I had forgotten how sweet the board can be.

Just got back from 8 days skiing out in Les Arcs. First 2 days on SL skis until the snow started to arrive. Had a great day in the trees as new snow was falling and got first tracks in the pow the following day just as the sun came out Some great skiing, I was on 90mm waisted skis for the rest of the week. Gand Col was a bit dodgy for rocks, many only just covered by the new snowfall but prob not a problem now!
It's been dumping like mad the last 2 days, I was seriously worried about trains being cancelled when I travelled back today - the bus drivers doing a great job keeping the service between the various parts of the place going so people could get their transfers.
Skied for a bit on Friday but gave up since the snow was wet and like cement to ski in and so much wind half the place was shut. Was still dumping when I left today (Sat) and snow looked just as wet - definitely not pow even at 2000 but hopefully once the storm finishes anything high will be pow for you guys...

Sunday.... well what a day, top lifts still closed (AR & GC) though, but conditions are as good as I've ever seen them. Blue bird day, not a cloud, completely different from yesterday - this is what it's all about.

allanm, Yep am here, am likely to be at altiport most days around 4pm. Drop by for a drink, they have great Apple Juice or Hot chocolate and brady. Tomorrow might finish the day at Lugi in 1950 at 5.30pm for the live music.
Today was just as they promised. No clouds, great snow, little wind in most places and as the day went on most areas did open. By late afternoon even the Grand Col was opened. There were some crazy people out today putting lines down things that really were not stable yet, but then it was a Sunday. The stuff which was not as steep was also great and gave a chance to tune up those skills for when the snow has settled a bit more. They say there is more snow to come, not sure myself but hope they are right.
I hope all those driving up on Saturday made it without any problem.

I know there is no accurate answer to this question, but for you Les Arcs regulars - will it still be skiable 5th April?
Tempted to have another trip in Easter Hols - I will only be piste cruising so abscence of powder etc is not an issue?

The end of the season is 26th April. I've skied there mid to late April several times and it's always been fine. So unless somethingdramatic happens to the weather I'd say that early April will offer great skiing.

Boris, It was particularily special this year in April as Easter was so early the slopes were dead. This year 5th April is start of Easter fortnight.......
Actually a question for rob@rar, how busy is Easter compared to New Year, Feb holidays.....?

You know it makes sense.

Boris, we don't arrive for the next trip until the 4th April, for 2 weeks. There will be plenty to do, see and ski.
thefatcontroller, iirc Easter is not as busy as the other two times. however, we tend to the areas that don't get many vistors anyway (e.g. Mont Blanc, "where you can hear a catepillar fart") etc. so dificult to tell. But queues were not a problem at all last year.

JimW, But last year they had not built that terrible new building right by the lifts. I hope the apartments do not get sold
Joking apart, JimW, is right, Easter is always much quieter than the other two main holiday periods although with the amount of poeple up yesterday you would have thought it was NEW YEAR again at the end of Jan.
Today was great, at last I am back doing what I like best. The off piste was excellent. Yes level 4, but as long as you know where to go it can still be fun and safe. Managed about three hours then had a rest and a little play after a late lunch. They even opened Molgovert (I spelt it wrong who cares ) The powder was great in some places, still loads of untracked stuff and maybe tonight we will get some more. Overcast most of the day although it was bright in the morning. By 4pm very flat light but the snow off piste above the altiport was still in great condition although really tracked. I did hear that the back of Lanchettes was horrible, fresh powder, breakable crust then Fresh snow again sitting on an ice base, crazy fools going there today. They made it down but said they did not enjoy it very much. Talk about layers. Great place to dig a pit to study snow formations.

snowcrazy, given the state of the building works I think we'll be OK for a while longer! But that is one lift (along with comborciere) I won't be pushing for an upgrade... keeps the riff-raff out doncha know.
Can't believe people went over the back - its asking for trouble after some ot the weather conditions we seen / heard about over the past few days.

We were out last year on the weekend starting on Good Friday, and had an fabulous week with loads of snow, and no noticeable queues other than at the Aiguille Rouge, and the mid station of the Transarc. Unseasonably cold (-18C) though for the first 3 days.
Heading out on the 3rd April this year. Already counting the sleeps.

jtobin03, Depends how long you are staying and where. If you are in Peisey Vallandry near the connection for the other side, and staying for two weeks or more then the paradiski is worth having. If you are only out for a week, then the explorer pass which gives one day in La Plagne is the best value (works out about 16Euro extra instaed of 26.50 for the day I think. You can always then buy extra days in La plagne if you want them. Hope that helps. |
Wonder if you can help. I've been researching prices (and discovering that Ski Collection have run out of discounted passes, sadly) and it's been doing my head in! If you were staying in Les Arcs 1800 for 9 days of skiing, would you get an 8 day Paradiski Decouverte pass (at €272 - eek! - as far as I can make out) and then get a day pass for either Les Arcs (€42.50) or Paradiski (€47.00)? Seems to me that that would give me 7 days in Les Arcs and 2 Paradiski days at €319, which is cheaper than getting a Les Arcs pass for 9 days (€287) and upgrading it twice at €26.50 (couldn't find that upgrade option on the website, actually) which would total €340.
I quite like to get around but, from what you say, staying in Les Arcs 1800 - as opposed to Peisey Vallandry - would not justify spending €334 on a Paradiski 9 day pass. On the other hand, though, that's only €14 more than the €319 option.
I think my brain's going to explode. Please feel free to ignore this question if it's all too much.

Depends whether you plan to do much skiing in La Plagne. I found with high mileage skiers then having a 1d in 7 added to variety when they were out a couple of weeks ago. So far I think I've skied 4 days in la plagne this season, and it's really only 1 lift away from where I live...
But from 1800, if you take vagere. villards, showmytodger then it's just one lift and one ski to get to the Vanoise Express..

That's effectively what my question is getting at, whether it's worth it - for an additional €14 if my calculations are in fact correct - over a 9 day ski period? (I've never been to Paradiski.) From what you say, perhaps not, better to have another pizza instead! Thanks, anyway.

Hurtle, there's plenty of variety in Les Arcs for 9 days, unless you prefer to never ski the same piste twice. My normal advice is to get the Discovery pass and do one day in La Plagne (ski as far as Champagny or Montalbert so you can go on a long trek) and spend the rest of the time trying to find the best bits of Les Arcs.

rob@rar, that's what it looks like to me, I think I was thrown a bit by the fact that you can't get a Discovery pass for 9 days, only for 8, and that sent me shooting off into a land of variables!

rob@rar, no, didn't think to do so, the website is very clear - the Decouverte option is only for 6 days or 8 days, and if you key in 9 days (to buy online) it's no longer displayed. Mind you, I couldn't find the 26.50 upgrade that others have posted about, so maybe not all the permutations are shown. I might just as well enquire when we get there, was only doing all this research in the - as it turned out, unfounded - hope that I could better their prices via Ski Collection. Sorry for all these anal calculations, didn't really mean to inflict them on everybody.

I didn't got for the extra €14 and by day 5 half wished I had just for some variety since I'd skied almost all of every area by then but €14 = £14 and my budget was tight.
Also remember that although buying passes for 6-7-8 days looks cheaper, if the weather is bad and you don't ski you've paid for the day. I skied one day when the weather was pretty bad and payed half price since many of the lifts weren't open. All a calculated risk....

Today was not very nice, well I did not think so. Went up late, came down early. Poor vis, cold and why punish yourself when tomorrow will be sunny (so they say). Stayed in the trees mostly, and drinking hot choc plus at the altiport. Maybe someone that stayed out all day and went higher might post what it was like over in Arc 2000.
Hurtle, I agree with rob, check out if they do a discover pass for nine days by calling them. I still think that is the best bet for your first trip. Loads to do on the Les Arcs side and you can always pay a little extra for another day if you want to go over to La Plagne again.

snowcrazy, Yes, agree, vis was pretty cr@p, spent the morning practising what I'd been taught in my lesson yesterday, off the gizzly, pretty 'slow' stuff - so vis not particularly a problem. Through the Valandry trees this afternoon was fine, likes of the 'rat run' and similar was good fun. Hopefully tomorrow will be much better though.

Hurtle, I'd go with the boys view on life too - if you can get a 9 day decouverte then do it, if not, then a 9 day Les Arcs and pay as you go, if you go.
PS I believe the daily upgrade @ €26.50 is available at the VE: show your pass and they will do the necessary.

Don't know about 1950 but if you can't find anywhere you can always go up to 2000 and go into the Bowling. They have Sky Sports and found the Spurs match I wanted to see when I was there. Very accommodating.

pmccaff, Luigi's in 1950 has sky sport, and will happily vary according punter demand (we watched the American Football last week for example) - just ask nice and be prepared to buy the beers at €8 per pint...
Bound to be some around to show you best places to go, otherwise, if your wallet has anything left in it after the prices in the bars in the village, you can get a 2, 3 hours, 1/2 day or full day's guiding from Spirit 1950 - conveniently next door to Luigis!
Personal favourites, and this is highly subjective depending on your skiing levels:
Blacks in 2000 bowl: Refuge (in the Grand Col; best early afternoon) Drosset, if open Lanches under the Varet lift - one very, very long mogul field down beside the KL Combourcieire, if your legs like a good thumping.
Reds: No competition: Malgovert. Live it, do it, breathe it, experience it. It's like nothing else you will have ever seen.
For off piste, there are some drops off the back accesed from Lanchettes, and the Aigulle Rouge lifts, as well as a hike from the top of Grand Col. And a beautiful run over the back of Col de la Chal. For all of these I'd recommend a guide at the very least first time out.
You can get inter-piste across the whole suite of the Col de la Chal runs, left and right your choice, off Arcabulle, and will find untracked stuff usually well into the afternoon of a powder day. Using plagnettes as your return for a quick turn arund on the steeper sections is ususally more time efficient than skiing back to Arcabulle.
Or if tree skiing is your thing, then the Mont Blanc blue in 1600 - accessible only from the Mont Blanc chair, or the Malgovert (see above), or Deux Tetes black when open - has a forest to its immediate left which is spectacular fun, and usually (unless rob@rar has been in there) pretty much full of untracked routes. Can't get lost, they all end up back at 1600. People of a more nervous disposition can ski alongside you on one of the quietest yet most beautiful runs in the resort ( but you won't see or hear them until the exit from the forest - you will end up in the same place).
You will need a helmet (to prevent tree slapping) as the trees are fairly densely packed and powder traces. Oh: and a sense of humour!
Hope this helps,
|
