Took a ride today on the new and improved Aiguille Rouge chairlift. It was so nice I went around and did it again.
Departure from pretty much the same point as before but they appear to have levelled the approach which is nice - no more skating or side stepping if you don't judge your speed just so.
Six person detachable chairs on new pylons taking a line slightly to the left of the old one.
Arrival about 100m further on and 100m to the left of previous arrival, nicely placed for the Lo Soli restaurant.
The only disappointment is that you can no longer use it to access the red Myosotis piste, which appears to have been abandoned. So, Tignes seems to be removing lifts, removing pistes but adding beds...
As a by-the-by, the Melezes piste down to Les Boisses was marked with red poles, so looks like it's had an upgrade from being a blue run formerly. Probably sensible and may encourage less courageous skiers to download in the bubble or hop on the bus.
And whilst on the subject, the top part of Crocus (that cuts out the loop on Henri to the top of Paquis lift) now has black marker poles rather than red, as was.

Well, it had been removed from the piste map displayed on the side of the Boisses bubble bottom station; these big displays are probably made up well in advance and a look at the downloadable PDF map suggests they may gave relented, with Myosotis still shown as a left turn off Corniche before you get to Lo Soli / Aiguille Rouge arrival. So, fingers crossed @vipul.

Myosotis (aka myxomatosis) is still shown on the ski plan list so fingers crossed!
In other news Dahl has opened so an easy way down from the Funi, that doesn’t need a trip on the cable car.

Arriving Saturday, and staying in Le Lac. The three kids (well adults now) are doing snowboarding lessons for first time (they are all competent skiers). Any advice on lift passes, or should I await until arrival and see what school advises (assume they’d be on free lifts the first day?).
Also, it’s my wife’s first tentative trip after her acl rupture, so we are likely to be very conservative for the week. Is there a Tignes local pass, and what does it cover?
|
|
|
|
|
|
@Pejoli, Follow ski school advice for the youngsters, I would be surprised if they will need a pass until day 3 at least. The Rosset slope is free and provides more than enough entertainment for beginners. It’s about 3 times the size of a snow dome.
As for the wife, you can save a little bit by buying a Tignes only pass, which does what it says on the tin. But, if you want lots of confidence building greens and easy blues you would be better off in the Green Triangle around the Borsat lift and Grand Pre, which now has a really nice but expensiveish coffee stop. This requires a full TVDI pass.

@Pejoli,
For the kids follow the snowboard school's advice.
For your wife I'd recommend the full Espace Killy pass for access to all the greens & blues.

Friends had their interest piqued by reports of my excursion towards Les Boisses yesterday so we headed that way this morning for a few laps. Best piste conditions of the season and anywhere in resort - and deserted! Every turn was like a knife through butter. Marvellous. And you could see!
Elsewhere pistes started the day likewise in great nic, but deteriorated somewhat simply owing to the amount of traffic. Hopefully the piste bashers will return them to good form overnight.
Plenty of groups now venturing off piste. I can't give a definitive view on conditions but the run down Combe Folle (not yet bashed or marked) suggested 'claggy' was probably the order of the day.

Tignes funicular has been running with delays in that you are kept in the holding pen for ages despite the funi being docked and ready to go.
I checked with the funi-lifties whilst waiting this am and they said they were currently working to a timetable of two an hour, on the hour.
Don’t go getting there at 05 or 35 past the hour They said this will change back to “on demand” operation but obviously they didn’t know when.
Makes sense and efficient running.
Following the disappearance of Rogoney and Champagny from the Motte, Leisses could be for the chop next. That would be very sad and lengthen skins out to link up with the bottom of Génépy.

I presume you mean two an hour on the hour and half hour
I noticed on our visit two weeks ago that the sign outside says 3,000 persons an hour and that capacity is 334 people. To achieve 3,000 people an hour would mean 9 trains per hour - ie under 7 mins per train, including loading and unloading.
From the time our train pulled away until the doors opened at the top was getting on for 9 minutes. I'm sure it used to run a bit quicker than that (about 7 mins?)
Regardless, nowhere near the stated 3,000 people an hour.

Sounds like it will often be quicker to take Lanches and then Vanoise rather than the funicular, for the moment?

It seemed to be going slower to me the other day yes! And the wait for the train departure was most annoying but my young client wanted to go on it so we waited!

Not sure if in my head or not but some chairs have seemed slower to me too, which does tie up with their requirement to reduce energy usage by 10% I suppose.

So after first applying for our residents parking permit on 26 October. We have finally got notification that we have our permit. This only happened as we have friends in town who went down to the owners’ and parking office to pester the folk. Friends reported chaos in both, with people getting irate. Does seem to have been a complete shambles.

For those resident's/seasionnaires out in Tignes, we're driving over next Friday (23rd) arriving Saturday (24th) leaving on the following Saturday (31st). Does anyone need anything bringing out that I can legally bring through customs? We'll be staying in the Almes area of Le Lac so can meet up to drop off etc.

Anyone know why none of the runs off GM funi were open this week? Requiring you to go up the cable car to get down. I really missed Double M this year.

Dahu was open yesterday from funi side-exit. We skied Rabotcha (closed) after checking with the hut down to Vanoise depart/Double-M. Langue de glacier was great in the gulley then, unsurprisingly, very rocky

My Question and response for pre-Booking parking for a rental car.
Not very helpful if the car park is full
The only other way i guess as others have said , Pre book any car to guarantee a space and hopefully when you get the hire car , Cancel your booking and immediately rebook your hire car hoping no one jumps in and books your spare space

Hello,
It is not feasible technically to booking the car plate number. However, you can make the reservation as soon as you get the car, until 1 hour before going to the parking lot.
I remain at your entire disposal and I wish you an excellent day.

Maybe the answer is to book a place with your your uk no. plates and take them with you and then when you get to the car park cover up the rental plates with duct tape amd have the UK on display

@wasley, That is a staggeringly inefficient way of operating the system - laughable, really.
I am sure they will make adjustments - mind you, I have been saying that for years about the HMRC Capital Gains service - but will it help anyone this season?

Same problem here with hire car. I now look to book and there are now NO spaces listed as free. We are staying 22-26 Dec. I can book 22-23, but not 24 onwards. What would happen if i book 22,23 and leave car there extra 2 days?
There seem to be some bookings on my account not paid for, perhaps me testing things out, but no way of deleting them
We are only going to see our son, and ski a bit, but once again my experience of Val D'Isere is not good.

My latest plan is to book on arrival at the car rental, for the 2 days parking available on the web site, and just leave the car there until 26th when their T&Cs say they will just charge my card the extra.

Hi all,
I had some insoles moulded a few weeks ago but one of them isn't quite feeling right. Unfortunately, I can't get back to the shop before going away. Would I be able to walk-in somewhere and get it fixed when in Val D'Isere or would I need to book an appointment etc? I think it only needs shaving down a little.
TIA

FAQ on Indigo website says you can add vehicle to your account by clicking my vehicles and adding the reg plate of the hire car when you pick it up. However I have questioned this direct and had the message back that you need to cancel your booking and re book on the day. Not convinced by this as we are going peak week Feb half term.

I parked in Tignes Lac 3 for a few days last weekend with a hire car. It worked out cheeper to just turn up and get a ticket / pay on departure than the price I'd been quoted on the website (which I didn't go through with as I realised I had no way of knowing my hire car reg in advance). For 4 days their site quoted 83 euro, but we only paid 63 euro for 4 days. Not sure if that is helpful to anyone but might be if you are going at a non-busy time where booking in advance is more essential.

Lets talk about snow for a bit (that's not to say that the parking debacle is not important )
Most people seem to have noticed that suddenly it has got a lot warmer in both the Alps and the UK. For the Alps it looks like its going to stop that way. But a couple of caveats, the all important snowline may well mean its going to be very soggy at the end of the week and we may even seen rain in the lower parts of the resorts by day. But it may well be snow by night for Fri into Sat which will make for transfer hell from wherever the snow line is. Caveat 2 - the jetstream is wiggling about a bit on the current forecast Tignes is under all the action weather wise, if it moves slightly north suddenly it will be all benign. Meteo France are still giving a 4 out of 5 confidence for Saturday so they seem sure for the moment.....
Tomorrow will be a nice (positively balmy for December) with sunny spells and light winds, maybe a bit breezier at the top of the GM if you pop up for the views (probably last chance this week). Because, Wednesday is going to see wind aloft and showers all day, it will probably start sleeting just below the level of the Dam. Thursday will be windier (expect the highest lifts to be closed), again showers all day (with perhaps a 3 hour break around lunchtime), again the snowline around the Dam or below. Friday will be windier again and warmer, hopefully the showers will be light as it could well be raining even up in Le Lac late morning. And then the conundrum - some forecasts say its going to be very snowy over Friday night into Saturday, some say light showers, some say snow in the villages, some say rain. So keep an eye out for the forecasts, it could be easy if the stars align, if they don't it could be messy (for the first big transfer day of the season!).

Well saturday morning first thing Face/ Stade Olympic was perfect. I took advantage of good light to do it 6 times on the bounce. First 4 runs I pretty much had it to myself. Sunday, though I was first on it, it really wasn't so good and was alot more challenging. I enjoyed it but the second wasn't so good, I spent a bit of time collecting skis for fallen skiers. Ramped up busier yesterday everywhere.
