sarah, Friday looks the wet and mild one and for a time on Saturday too - but could be quite a lot of snow down towards resort level by SAt night / Sunday morning.
Snow tomorrow above about 1400/1500m - 20/30cm possible higher up.
Edit = GFS 06Z has 70 cm to 1m of snow equivalent precipitation by next Tuesday.

Chatel Snow, Not so bad - warm front then cold front - we'll fair better (probably) than Les Gets but even there I remember a few years back it rained the whole of New Year's day and almost washed the pistes away and then overnight the following night it snowed loads - thigh deep on Mont Chery - totally transformed the place.
Took a look at the photos and yes that slope above the snow park is notorious for slides so it looks like they are in all the usual places.

Chamonix meteo is more optimistic about FL than some of the other forecasts; let's hope they're right. With good snow cover a day of rain doesn't do too much damage, albeit it's miserable to ski in. But with present sketchy cover a good downpour will do no good at all - and unless the subsequent snow is a decent dump we won't end up any better off. Except, of course, that's it'll be the end of the ghastly New Year week and sanity will return to the slopes!

pam w, All forecasts I have seen are suggesting snow down to around 1000m by Sat night / Sun morning - but there is conflicting evidence on f/levels for Thurs and Friday - partly because these can also vary from valley to valley due to Fohn etc
According to meteo france site as I type
Thursday FL 1700m snow/rain 1400m
Friday FL 2000m plus snow/rain 1700 - 2000m (yuk)
Sat FL 1900m falling to 1300m - snow/rain 1600m then 1000m
seems about right looking at the charts - but would be nice if those FL's came down a bit!!
edit - it will probably change again by the morning!

I spotted two skin tracks up the ridge right of Chalet Neuf drag. It has a habit of sliding there (that is based on many years of observation rather than me skiing it.
The black bump run to the right of the Coqs drag at Super Chatel had a slide and I saw evidence of one above Torgon.
The area between Chermillon and Onnaz is another piece of tempting off-piste which often slides. Take care all.
That's it from me until our lad's trip in March unless I can fit in a last minute long weekend end Jan/begin Feb. Heading for the in-laws in Holland tomorrow.
Chatel Snow, keep up the good work. Maybe we'll manahe a beer next time.
alj, the pass gets ploghed quite well but if it is cold and snowy the Chatel side can be treacherous on summer tyres.

The forecast for the next few days looks awful, the snow line about 1400m today. Rain tomorrow at the same level and rising to 1800m on Saturday. Sunday looks better with the snow line falling to 400m during the day. Phew

Sleet at 1300m in Petit Chatel, rain in the village as I wait outside the bakery, suspect it is snow from 1400m and upwards.
Best part of 1000km awaits. Oh joy!

Kiters, The cold front on Sat night / Sun morning could bring a lot of snow - then possibly mostly fine and mild for a couple of days and after that ... who knows!!!
Alternating between heavy wet snow and sleet here at 1200m - so should be accumulating nicely a bit higher up!

mheadbee, and not depressing as its snowing where it counts - where most of the pistes are, higher up the hill!

Try and stay positive everyone! I know its hard - fingers crossed that the snow line drops for all of you heading out there.
We left yesterday morning and it was cold but sunny, which meant the drive home was great but not sure it is really what is needed in terms of keeping the snow they have in good condition.

Can't vouch for the conditions now as I'm having a coffee in Luxembourg but as I came over the pass the sleet turned to snow and it was belting down in Morgins making the first bit of the drive down rather slippery. Didn't turn back to sleet until Troistorrents. Must have been laying it down thick up top. The weather on the road has been foul so that bodes well also.

The rain turned to snow in Chatel at 1200m at times this morning - very heavy for a time. There was about 15cm fresh above 1600m at Super Chatel - wind too - so difficult to determine how much, and potentially more fell higher up. Snow was sticky below 1700m - but fine above that and Super Chatel was deserted when I got there at 12.
Photo this pm...

Great picture, Chatel Snow. Snow above 1700 aint that bad!
DJL, do you avoid the tolls via Luxembourg? Is there a limit to how much "extra" fuel one can buy there? Was thinking about getting an extra 25 litres while there for the trip back.

clong, No tolls (other than the Swiss vignette) via Luxembourg and cheaper petrol (Euro 1.30 for 98 unleaded) but it's really not worth it if you're going Calais-PDS. I was heading for Holland with a roof box on so the quickest route (via German motorways) would have cost a packet in petrol. Took 10 hours with two decent stops so around 8h30 driving and the bit through the Vosges is picturesque and breaks it up a bit
