Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

mountainaddict, Coire Laogh Mór (the valley of the big coo)! A nice run, with a few interesting variations possible into either coire

Big Corrie of the Calf I think.

^ same difference? dont think there's an English word "corrie" though? and the "big" refers to Laogh not Coire (else it'd be Coire Mor na Laogh (ish)). Think Coire can be field or valley (next door Coire na Ciste is the valley of the coffin - cracking name and must be an interesting story! Ciste Meairead further up the hill (Mairead's coffin!)

Cheers barry! We Sassenachs struggle with the pronunciations so may well now just refer to those areas as the cow run etc! Is Mairead Gaelic for Mary (or other name)?? If so, we'll look forward to doing Mary's coffin Skullie....

mountainaddict,

Corry Lee Moor and Corry na Keeest will do ya for pronunciations, actually most hills and glens etc around there aint to bad (Loch Avon aside rolling eyes - Loch aaaaaaaaaaaaaannn

Mairead is a strange one as its become very much Anglicised. In Scots Gaelic (which I aint - i'm the proper original version Cool ), Mairi/Mhairi would be a common translation for Mary, in Ireland Máire (anglicised sometimes to Maura) would be common, although I think Mairead is often used. All the above are really pretty much Anglicised now (more culture stripping wink )

regardless, be a bit canny in Ciste Mairead as its snowhole city for climbing groups, so it could well live up to its name! (some awesome snowholes in there some years - corridors linking chambers etc Shocked ). They're all usualy along the very obvious ridge that runs along the right hand side so easy enough not to end up in one of the sitting rooms!)

Pretty sure the Mor referes to the coire not the calves in question, the one next door being Coire Laogh Beag, the small coire of the calves? Regards use of 'corrie' in English, was told in School that in Standard Scottish English it's coire for single and corries for plural.

proper Gaelic would be the opposite - coire beag = small coire, laogh beag = babba coo (so when literally translated its coire small and calf small), could well be different in the ripped aff version wink . Like taking the e out of our whiskey!

do you know of any published history / origins of some of the names? some of them evoke thoughts of wild stories behind the names and other are simply a little curious (Lurcher's Gully, Chalamain Gap, Hells Lum - though I think I can work that one out!). Any of Adam Watsons publications get into it?

interesting stuff, makes a tour more enjoyable to consider it when travelling through or just past

Cheers barry! But what about the pronunciation of Mairead Puzzled

In true Siobhan/Shervorn-style, no doubt Mairead is pronounced 'Mavis' or something wink ?

We've had a few sorties into Ciste Mairead - and have seen the scale of the snow-hotels that appear there! So far, we've managed to avoid dropping in on someone's sitting room..... Smile

mountainaddict, more contention I'm afraid. I think in Scotland, typically it would be My-red, whereas in Irish it's be more like ma-reyad. The two languages are very similar (and funnily enough accents compare to each other too, west coast Scots Gaelic accent is uncannily like west coast Ireland), but pronounciation definitely one of the big differences.

Any Scottish weather experts care to speculate if there will be a window of opportunity early next week for a slide, after what I am hoping is some fresh snow over the coming days.....Preference of ski areas are Glencoe, Nevis and 'Gorm....

Fresh tracks almost everywhere @ Glenshee today, both on and off-piste & Glas Maol area was amazing although visibility was not so good. After a wee run from Glas Maol into neighbouring Garbh Coire and out to the A93 alongside the burn, my feet were shot through new boot syndrome so just a few runs in the area after that. Great day despite the boots misbehaving. Little Angel

Ricklovesthepowder, it's shaping up to be yet another good season but as interest dwindles, some of the operators will likely revert to weekends only soon. Sad

mag1882, hope the sun shines for you to make us jealous with photos. Winterhighland is up and running again and Helen has reported decent snow at Cairngorm. Smile

Looking at the weather data sites today, the GFS and ECM modelled patterns for the next two weeks are astounding with a cold, snowy pattern for the next 10 days or so looking very likely. Easter skiing could be classic everywhere but Cairngorm / Glencoe may still have extensive, deeply filled gully runs available to ski lush, Spring snow into May and June again. Little Angel

Following the last few smiley central posts, here's another one ...

There's good news for anybody heading to Glencoe to ski or spectate @ the Coe Cup this weekend because looking at the ECM, GFS & NAE model data, there'll be 6-9 inches of fresh snow to come for the West Highlands above 1,500-2,000 feet between tomorrow and Friday followed by a sunny day Saturday and a broken cloud Sunday. snowHead

Glenshee is already freshly pasted. Little Angel

Alan @ Winterhighland reported six inches of fresh snow @ Cairngorm this morning. Cool

Aonach Mor should pick up at least as much snow as Glencoe does and the back coires @ Nevis Range should be in great condition at the weekend with lots of freshies and sunshine expected. Braveheart a goer maybe ? Very Happy

But we'll still never convince some people about the merits of Scottish skiing! Spoke to a (retired, with time on their hands) skiing couple who had walked up to spectate at yad Moss Confused recently who had never skied in Scotland and - despite my full-on enthusiastic sales pitch ('They've got bluebird conditions at the moment....every lift and run are open') - 'Just don't fancy it....'

Their loss eh rolling eyes ?

I just dont get it either, up here you get great snow conditions, blue sky, a real choice of runs from narrow and natural to full on alpine spec motorway. Mid week you can lap it up mostly to yourself or a half a dozen others. Every area has some big wide pisted runs in great nick as well as their own unique specialities in condition as well.

mountainaddict, oldagedpredator, I've always put it down to the difference between 'holidaymakers who ski/board' and 'skiers/boarders' if you get my drift. There are some who wouldn't be seen dead on a Scottish mountain no matter what conditions were like but then maybe we/I wouldn't really want to be seen dead on the same mountain as them!

Just by way of an addendum to the above I was on a tow with a chap from an Aberdeenshire seaside town not a million miles away from Aviemore the other day and he commented that it was his first day skiing this season. Being slightly flabbergasted I asked him why, thinking it might be work or circumstance related, he replied that he tends to think that if there's no snow where he lives there's no skiing so he only comes when he sees snow. I suggested that webcams and forums might be a better way to work out how much snow there is in the mountains rather than looking out the window by the sea, he just shrugged and suggested that it was unusual anyway to have good snow at this time of year in Scotland ... he shrugged again when I put him right on that one too and said "oh, I see, I never knew that!" and we ended our ride up the tow on that comment.

The moral I guess is if even relative locals can express this level of ignorance about the Scottish hills it's unsurprising that those further afield might be a trice unaware of what Scotland has to offer and even wary having heard the usual horror stories from those others who put their lack of research, flexibility in booking or even skill down to Scottish skiing being invariably bad.

Agreed. We were on a dream 3 day catskiing trip in British Columbia at New Year with Canadians who seemingly ski nothing but wonder conditions/mainly powder. At the end of the trip, one of them proclaimed 'Yep, from now on, the icy groomers just won't cut it!' Hmm, I wonder which category they come into Roga? (And what they'd make of Scottish heather hopping.....or 'slightly marginal' snow at Yad Moss in the Pennines (below) wink....

^The tow was (unsurprisingly) closed that day in Feb - but we skinned up Smile - and now they've got loads of snow again.

I know what you mean though - we regard skiing as a way of life Very Happy. Since our New Year Canada trip, Mrs MA and I have used up only two days holiday from (full time) work, have not been abroad but had only one ski-free weekend. That's been down to snow lying in the Pennines for 8 or 9 weeks (and skinning up when the tows have been off, as above) plus great snow in Scotland. We've had such a good time that we almost can't be @r$€d to go to Tignes on Saturday Laughing!! We just feel like we're getting into the season...and it's suddenly mid March Confused !!
