Driving out to Chatel/Linga on Friday but a bit concerned that the Chatel webcam is showing less snow everyday and the village looks clear of the white stuff.
If anyone's out there can they tell us what's the situation? Is there enough snow to ski back down into Chatel/Linga/Prix La Joux, if not how far down is it skiable?
The forecast for this week doesn't look promising, what's there to do if there's no snow?

zzz, don't ask.
Was in Paris on Saturday and have picked up a most unpleasant chest cold. So yesterday mostly tucked up under the duvet. Does not bode well for honour on Saturday next.

I'm not in Chatel but I have been there many times including early and late season when there's been less snow than now and I pretty sure you'll be fine. Most of the slopes around there don't need a great deal of snow to have good skiing and looking at the webcams on Snoweye, the pistes look to be well covered including Pre La Joux. If it's warm the bottom part at Linga can be prone to ice/slush so that might be a bit difficult at the moment but you can always come down on the gondola from half way up, and similarly at Super Chatel. And there will still be a lot above Plan Dranse (1600m ?) and over to Avoriaz and beyond if the lower runs are poor before the snow cannons have a chance to do their stuff when it gets colder.

I am not due to Chatel for another 3 weeks tommorow but I am still getting a bit nervous. The silly thing is you read a bad report and get all down then you read a positive one like yours and you all get upbeat again. How i feel at the moment is toatally reliant on the type of individual makes the latest post on this thread regardless of the weather forecast.

I know that feeling exactly! I'm also going to Chatel 3 weeks tommorow and can't remember feeling this nervous about the snow.
3-4 years ago there were similar conditions and although the first day was spent skiing on pretty poor pistes the snowfall over the subsequent few days was magnificent. Could we be that lucky twice?
Regardless of the conditions it beats working!

As long as it is not too icy and the visibility is good I will be happy. Obviously powder and sun is ideal but I will hope for the basics first.
I went to bareges 3-4 years ago on 31st Jan and it was about 15-20 degrees and t shirt weather. Only snow was some artificial snow which was basically ice, it was so bizaar to see these icey pistes snaking through green fields, rock and mud. We gave it a go but it was basically no fun at all. As you looked around and saw rocks and plants you just felt so depressed that it was hard to get excited and make the most of it. I have this vision in my mind that still haunts me so when I arrive in chatel and the mountains are covered in white I know I will be pleased.

summer, something strange going on forecast-wise. Val D'Illiez website forecasting snow today/tomorrow. Snow-forecast.com - yesterday was showing nothing for six days, is now showing steady snow from Thursday for several days.
I have to say I find the latter more accurate when I am there and I sometimes wonder if the Val D'Illiez site succumbs to wishful thinking, but it seems likely snow of some sort is on the way... at last.
Please keep us informed from your position "on the spot"!
Cheers - Tim

Swiss meteo suggestion some snow to the plaine tomorrow but Chamonix Meteo, who are generally the most accurate for the area, at least on the French side are saying nothing other than cold at least till the end of next week.
Snow-Forecast simply output the results of the computer models with no interpretation in between, so are very variable and not terribly accurate.

I have to say when I am on the mountain I find snow-forecast to be pretty accurate, with the caveat that they always seem to forecast a lot more snow far ahead, and revise it down as the day nears. So when I see 30 cm forecast for six days' time I dont get excited as it usually drops to 7 or 8. But my experience at least is that they are pretty good at least a couple of days ahead.
Still as my grandad used to say, if you want to know what the weather will be like tomorrow, the best thing is to wait til tomorrow and then look out of the window

TSR and meteosuisse.ch say light snow tonight, cloudy tomorrow and Thursday and snow Friday although light. Forecast seems to be changing on an hourly basis though and locals here are saying if it snow the day after the full moon the snow will come thick and fast....No snow after the full moon and expect weeks of high pressure. Think full moon maybe tomorrow?

I just noticed on the Chatel Rochassons Webcam that the lifty chap was putting all the Chairlift seat bases in the vertical position.....perhaps i am clutching at straws here, but I guess he may be expecting SNOW !....or possibly just to deter vagrants & Wino's etc...
Yours hopefully.....

Personally I'm not a great believer in this full moon thing. Despite tomorrows full moon, the forecasts say there is no significant snow on the horizon, at all. I'm generally a glass half full sort of chap, honest, but that is the situation. For anyone coming on holiday, there is skiing to be had. The pistes around Avoriaz are ok, if you don't mind spring type skiing. If you are a powder fan then you are going to be disappointed. I can't comment on the Swiss side, perhaps Summer can add her views. It will be colder soon, which means they'll start making snow again, however, the pistes will then stay rock hard all day!!
I wouldn't want to be staying in Les Gets (but then I never would ) because you'll be driving to Ardent every day but if you are coming to Morzine, at the moment the Super Morzine links to Avoriaz are still open.
Personally I blame Mrs Flying Stantoni, last time she spent a winter here it was the same
A friend of mine is skiing in Courmayeur this week, where conditions are significantly better.

summer, yeah, "light snow". About as much use as a chocolate thermometer, of which there is one in Morzine, funnily enough.
sanman, see what I mean? when things are hard to predict, the models seem to jump around all over the place (reasonably enough) - but they don't produce (or at least, publish) any sort of confidence figure. CHamonix meteo for example, if they can see far ahead will say, "forecast reliable until x days ahead" and if they can't see far at all, "forecast reliable until about half an hour from now".

Pistes here in Swiss -Les Crosets/ Champery are variable! Very bare in places on Planachaux and best avoided after about 11am as gets chopped and very brown and muddy- take the straight route down and do not meander off to the sides as you will find grass! Stade into Crosets is OK, hard and fast as North Facing, few stones to watch. Snow Park is a sad site, one big jump and a couple of fun boxes, not too much snow to make anything. Ripaille/ Chavanette area is ok again, better in the mornings if it's warm. Grand Conche Pavre Conche are brown as is black off Mossettes, but all still skiable. Still fun skiing here on Swiss side, just not with your best skis!!! Ripaille Grande Paradis run closed.

We had about 33 flocon about 8 mins 40 secs ago in the village (Champery) few more on top then stopped! A
Mist has hovered up top all day and occasional breaks in the clouds to reveal blue sky and sun! Only positive is the attempts to begin making snow again up top!

i know this is a snow thread, but also seems ok for info, so can someone tell me how the lift pass works in the PDS , i.e. if staying in les gets am i better buying the local mozine/les gets 6 day pass
(there seems to be a good deal on line if you bulk buy 4 or more ) , and upgrade daily if we venture further afeild, or is it better just to bite the bullett and get the whole PDS pass straight off ??
if the snow is good we are likely to be covering a lot of milage !!

Ricklovesthepowder, cheers, do you know if the "family deal" i.e 10% off for four tickets means actual family or just four people buying online together

Neilski, we bought PDS for our whole trip for the first time at New Year. You just need to do two days 'out' to make it worthwhile. Also saves faffing about! We bought in tourist office instead of online as the 10% discount didn't seem to be available on the web. They did need photos but just copied the ones on our old cards. I'm not sure whether the discout applies to actual family or not. I would drop Les Gets office de tourisme/or Sagets an email (more likely to get a response from them than PDS lot, ime

Neilski, i think technically the family pass is for family only. I've bought PdS passes at Champoussin and Les Crosets and had to show ID, which in effect means passports, to prove we all had the same name.
It seems a little unfair to people with kids from a previous marriage who have a different surname, and also we are taking my nephew this year who has a different surname, but is still very much "family". But that's the way it works AFAIK.
Cheers Tim

Spoke to Wife who is in Chatel (well actually Chappelle d'abondance) for the weekend with her friend. They skied Pre La Joux today, all around Plaine Dranse and she said the skiing was fine. She had gone out scared stiff because of the general vibe on this thread but honestly, she was just happy to be out there.
She's going to go over to Avoriaz tomorrow so will post up how she is finding it but personally, I'm jealous she's out there and I cant wait to get out for my weekend trip on the 29th!!
