Must be good - mentioned in midtable on SCGB summary:
The end of this week sees one of the biggest dumps of snow in Scotland for a long time. All five main resorts are closed due to extremely heavy snow and high winds. The snowfall is also affecting access roads but when the weather clears the skiing will be comparable to top powder resorts in the world, especially considering how the snow drifts at the Scottish resorts.
and all the Scottish resorts in the top 10 snowfall in the world this week. The first time ever?

In the top ten i would say yes, quite a few times this season they have all been on that list somewhere, but never top 10!!!

"Whiteout conditions are preventing further access to the upper Mountain. We have left the hill due to dangerous road conditions. There is betweem 1.5 and 2 metres of fresh powder on the Lower Slopes and Zig Zags and significantly more further up the Mountain."
man, i want to be there in two days time once they've managed to dig the road out, again!

Some friends hired last week from the abandoned pub, black something? Kit was in very poor condition, one of them took a gash out of the non existent base during the day - the damage was so bad you could see the edge inlay - and they didn't even check the skis before putting them back against the wall.

Fergus, keep an eye out for the unreasonably big skis. Leaving Helensburgh about 7. Worst comes to worst we build a kicker or something and mess about.

Fifespud, I don't understand your point at all. Here in LDA we have a 5 month winter season, and OK, with the altitude we'll always have 5 months of opening, but I was working in Scotland inthe 80s which are constantly being held up as being a 'heyday' for scottish skiing, and we never consistently had snow across the ridges. It's normally gully skiing, and frequently adventure skiing. The scottish skiing industry has enough problems without holiday skiers being told that it's been disastrous for years, when it hasn't.
Praise what's there and the fact that you CAN ski for 2-4 months of the year - don't slag it off if you can't. We all have poorer years. |
Did you actually read my posts????
I was not slagging it off, I was merely offering my appreciation of those that have battled to keep skiing alive as a commercial operation - an industry as you say.
Every day on skis in Scotland is a source of joy for me, whether in a gully or in a snow filled bowl. I would encourage anybody to come and try it. Each day on skis in Scotland feels like 2 in the Alps, very special.
Can I not offer a some genuine appreciation of folks efforts without getting flamed?

shoogly, that aint in fact the a9, it's the parallel b-road running road from kingussie north to kincraig & aviemore. A9 will be clearer than that. Still though it's a good indication of conditions in around the villages and on the ski road (yesterday at least)

Hi all,
For those of us attempting to make the trip up this weekend, it would be extremely useful for people 'on the ground' so to speak to provide regular updates on road status / digging out situation etc if at all possible.
If anybody is able to provide up to date info that would be great. Personally heading up to Glenshee area Saturday night, so interested in A93 and the road up from the spittal to the ski centre. Will of course be monitoring winterhighland.co.uk constantly.
Thanks in advance!!

keep an eye on www.trafficscotland.com
it's the official government website. at the moment it's showing snowgate closures on all of the roads leading to all of the ski resorts in scotland.
actually, it's now showing the A82 as being open so you should be able to get access to Glencoe and Nevis Range. I'd imagine that avalanche risk may be substantial after the mega snow that's fallen over the last 48 hours.
keep an eye on travel/weather section on mfr.co.uk too. it's the local Moray Firth radio, but covers a good chunk of the country and gives pretty good updates of road status.
trafficscotland.org also good. probably not as up-to-date on statuses, but the road webcams ("live eye views") on there are great for getting the conditions of some of the key routes. Site likely to be crashing now and then at the moment though due to VOLUME OF TRAFFIC (ahhhhhhhthankyou!)

Fergus, A82 was closed when I got up to ski. Too late to go now for a half day and the wind is holding off lifts at Nevis so I reckon Glencoe would be doing well to open any more than the plateau. Tomorrow!
