More snow is certainly required though as there were one or two bare patches beginning to show through - according to the Ski Instructor, that would be Tuesday onwards.
Still I had a great week and am a happy bunny |
Nah after sunday and todays snow the pistes are in great shape - well not quite yet but there's been lots of fun to be had off-piste yesterday and today...
Not much sign of the forecast 25cm that's due tonight but lets see what happens!! Alarm set for 08:00 to make 1st lift it happens, if not then leisurely brekkie and stick my skis on for a piste blast...

Slightly OT for 'snow reports' but..quick (retorical) question time..
Say the Transarc upper section has been flagged as being closed at the bottom lift, then a bit later in the day you are at the top of the vagere and see the upper bubbles moving..
How do you tell whether they are letting punters on the lift, without skiing down and having a look? |
Slightly rhetorical question as I was a little surprised our SCGB rep needed this pointing out to him, as to me it seems pretty obvious:-
Look where the bubbles cross in the middle of section where the pylons are a good distance apart - if there are punters in the bubbles going up then the upwards bubble is about 6-10 foot lower than the the down bubble. If the bubbles are at the same level then there are no punters going up the mountain!

I agree with you, today was the best day of the season for me, lots more new snow to add to yesterday's 10-12cm., and still uncrowded pistes. The bonus was: there had been no wind in the night, and because it had been a little warmer & drizzly late yesterday afternoon, the new snow. when it came in the night mostly, stuck immediately and covered up the bare patches higher up, according to the head pisteur on Les Arcs Radio this morning. He sure was right! It was brilliant... There was no need to go really high, Aiguille Rouge, Varet & Grand Col were closed till afternoon anyway, so I thought I would leave 'em till tomorrow, but there was so much stuff lower down, in and around the trees, and around my favourite off piste, on the left of Reches, going down to the mid station of Transarc, though it'll probably be trashed tomorrow, when some of you snowheads find it. Like Bertie, I also like the off piste at the side of Renards, there is so much variety and room for everyone. Have you tried the side of Rhodos yet? (and Bellette)
By the way, it's snowing again...

Tuesday was the best day's skiing I have had in Les Arcs since buying there in 2003. End of.
There are pictures, just not yet. Not going to share the powder field's precise location, selfishly I know, but its in the 2000 bowl, off Arcabulle, and we were still the only tracks in it by midday. Totally, unbelievably Awesome. (The reason I'm not saying is the same hapened last year, So I reckon its a good bet for next year too!).
Today was pretty good too.
The trees above Peisy were still running soft powder rather than an expected crust, and it was as if no-one had been in the forest at all. (1600 trees we did a few times on Monday, (rob@rar knows the runs) and they were good - still a lot of powder around there, and I suspect even more now.)
Stopped for lunch in the Squirrel, Will had had " a bit of a late night" and was still clearing up as we arrived, but burgers were up to thier usual high standard.
Aigille Rouge has some unbelievably large moguls at the top, which were fun after lunch and the clouds cleared. But if biggg bumps are not your thing, I would suggest the red route instead - mind you I personally hate that.
This has been a great week: So few crowds, fabulous powder (yes we used the powder traces for the first time in ages), great company: if only the £: eur was better it would have been perfect.
Due to excess pleasure in said powder, didn't get to do the Challenge. Will attempt at Easter. Off to Malgovert for our last day ( thurs) tomorrow.
I have a grin the width of my face from the last couple of days, and it will be a while before it goes.

Boris, Chalet de L'Arc is only 20 - 25 mins from Peisey via the Transarc. 40 mins up from there to the Aiguille. Its going to be shut for most of the coming week though. 1 more sleep to go....

If the forcasters are correct we will have snow down to Bourg perhaps even lower by Friday evening. Snow level 200m with 26 cm for Friday and 19 cm for saturday. Might need your chains again if you are arriving or leaving this weekend. Could be interesting. bertie bassett, sounds like you have been having fun, hope to be out on my board as well in the next few days. Is Will doing bacon butties this season.

Bring it on!
Snow still good but a bit sketchy now in places - the bottom of the Aiguille Rouge down into Villaroger is shocking below the Solliet restaurant, still it's about 1/3 the distance of the lys run, so I'll have to grin and bear it. There is snow cover but it's (a) very icy and (b) really 'corrugated' - i.e hard lumps on it that jar your fillings.
I do find it surprising given that it snowed a lot on Sunday/Monday how bad conditions on this piste are already, I appreciate it might well have rained on it as it's a bit lower than the rest of the resort...
Snowcrazy - no the bacon butties are no more, but there's a wide range of panninis and some great burgers if that's you're lunch fetish - I've been known to blowout on one about 4pm after a day on the slopes and then sack off dinner. We should hook up for some boarding in due course, I definitely need to find some more off-piste places to play...

rob@rar, Will try to leave a bit of untracked stuff for you to play on. My knee is getting better.
Martin Nicholas, anna_1104, allanm, I hope you have your chains if the next 24hrs are anything like today has been. I have just been told that the roads are crazy half way to Albertville. The snow has now turned to rain from Bourg down and it is starting to freeze again. Not all roads are clear yet around the valley but they are working hard. Chain signs are on for anyone trying to go up to all resorts. They say tomorrow there is suppose to be more of the same. We have had at least 15cm in the valley and a lot more higher up. but the wind is blowing. Good luck those driving out.
I think the freezing level is rising so by tomorrow roads up to resort may well be ok. But that is only what I think so do not count on it. But hey, by Sunday the sun will be shinning.
Today almost all the lifts were closed by after lunch. Cold, wet and windy with heavy wet snow lower down and avalanche risk level 4/5. Tomorrow if it does warm up it could be a level 5 black day. There is a lot of snow just arrived holding onto nothing. Stay safe out there.

What a funy (as in odd) day - as Snowcrazy said woke up to it puking down, all the pistes were like off-piste all morning. But come 2pm started pissing with rain all the way up to nearly the top of derby (2300m) this made the snow cloggy and really really sticky. Then come around 5pm at 1650 it turned to snow, not rain and also got seriously windy - now as I type this it's snowing lightly and obviously going to be snowy uptop - wouldn't wan't to be on a transfer bus tomorrow though...

drdodds, and everyone else...
we left 1950 today at 8 am, there had been about 3 - 4 inches, and it was falling hard. Road clearing really wasn't working all that well, it was coming down so fast. Did have winter tyres and 4x4 , but probably should have had the chains as well. Still, rental cars eh?
Took about an hour to get to BsM where it was still snowing. Another 50 mins to Moutiers, where it changed from snow to rain.
Webcams from this evening show a lot more in the village . But suspect the roads will be cleared by the excellent crews in time for Saturday transfers.
Boris, As per Martin, blue skies were not order of the day in Peisey so we came straight over to 2000, still foggy and misty, but I reckoned that there woudl be a window in the clouds on the AR, and if we timed it right, everyone else would be not going up top because it looked so 'orrible.
Indeed that was the case, and we walked straight onto the cable car. So we were up there about 3.30. Which is, in my book, "after lunch"!!
Malgovert in the morning was wunnerful.
Took a first timer on it: he reckoned that there had been some drunken bet " I reckon I can put a piste anywhere" Oh, yeah? bet you can't do one here"... and that was how someone decided that particular spot would be a good one...
Anyway, that's all history, as soon as the pictures come back fro the camera that has gone to the US, I will share - a particularly good one of powder up to someone's ankles.
The point being that at the time he was on his head, somersaulting down the mountain and the ankles (and board) were all that was showing...
Boy did we have some fun. 72 days til we're back.
PS good visibility isn't going to help you find the secret lift. In fact, it will probably hinder...

thefatcontroller, Had heard they were doing some more base-jumping from the VE next week, so maybe this is a part of that.
Weather days tend to be those put in a programme, "just in case".
Saw someone obviously practising in the 2000 bowl this week while we were going up in the Varet bubble: think he was coming down Genepi or Robert Blanc ( never sure which is which when sat in the UK!) Awesome, took about 20 - 30 seconds.

So who went out in the lovely weather today. If you did please post and tell us. It looked horrible from down here. |
One of the joys of living up the mountain is that you can take 20 minutes to 'give it a go' - if it's rubbish then it's not taken much / anytime at all. Undoubtedly from BSM then it takes a bit longer and so the faff / reward factor is lower. But if you didn't get out you missed a fabulous day... albeit one where all the upper lifts were closed - the highest you could get was the top of Derby or Vagere - nothing higher was open and I guess the inter-resort links were Navette only.
So to give a photographic view of how much snow has fallen since thursday then have a look at this, taken late this afternoon of the roof of my car which was clean thursday 6pm.
It has to be be said that today was one of my TOP 5 ever days on a mountain - there was just so much powder it was ridiculous! Dry and fluffy and whilst the visibility was poor at times it just added to the fun - am I on piste / off-piste or whatever.. Got out at 11, sacked it off at 4pm didn't stop for lunch I was too busy grinning. Bumped into AllanM randomly under 2300 and did a couple of runs with him but managed to lose him in the cloud about 2 runs later.
Did Golf as the last run of the day and it was AMAZING - just so much powder and not even close to being nailed into hard as concrete bosses..

board, would have lasted about 10 minutes in that on skis...
I did 4-5 classic endos where I flipped over the front of the board as i'd misjudged the depth of snow, it was hilarious...
Saw probably about 15 different groups of people playing 'hunt the ski...'
