nbt, Why do you think it is "H&S Rubbish"?
If their insurance policy only insures them for ages 6+, then they would be bloody stupid to allow anybody younger on their slopes.
Whether it would be safe for a 5 year old is totallly irrelevant. I presume when they were setting up, they will have got a number of quotes for insurance, and will have taken the one which seemed likely to be most cost effective.
They then have to abide by the terms of that insurance.

alex_heney, precisely - they've chosen to implement a policy which excludes certain people from certain activities based on an innaccurate assessment of possible risks. H&S rubbish.

Yes, I did read what you wrote. Can you understand what I wrote? Someone made a commercial decision to use an insurance policy which requires a minimum age of 6. WHY? What is the reasoning behind that? Do you suddenly become less likely to fall at age 6 that at age 5? I stand by my point - can you stop arguing and start thingking for once? Of late, Alex, all I've seen you do is argue against whatever point is being presented>

Do they not teach under 6s at all? They're missing out on some business if that's the case, but if their economics gurus have decided the insurance premium vs income sums don't add up, well that's their right of course. However their competitors have different views:
Castleford Xscape won't do lessons for under 7s without an adult - but they do parent/child classes in which the parent learns how to guide the child (really useful holiday prep I think).
Tamworth do "Kinder" lessons for younger kids on a separate small slope in small groups.

I understand perfectly what you wrote.
And you highlight the very point of it yourself.
It was a commercial decision. So not "H&S rubbish".
As for "why", I ibviously am not privy to their decision making process, but I can only assume that the additional cost of including younger people on the policy was higher than any income they might have expected to get from those younger people.
And as for why the insurance company charge different rates if you have smaller children allowed, I again don't know, but I would presume they are extrapolating from statistical data they have from the closest similar types of insurance.
Insurance companies are in business to make money. They won't do that if they set the premiums wrongly - too low and they will lose money because claims will be higher than premiums - Too high and they will lose business to their competitors.
I honestly believe this is all based on commercial decisions, rather than being anything to do with H&S as such.

well, someone set a minimum age. I understand that CF chose it based on cost, but who decided that 6 is the age when you can learn to ski?
Butterfly, apparently not, which is what really annoys me. I was really looking forward to it, as was Mrs NBT - if he likes it we're hoping to take him away next year. doesn;t look like he'll get the chance to try snow no though

I'm not sure anybody actually decided that at all.
Unless the insurance companies decided not to offer insurance at all for under 6 years old, in which case they made the decision.
But I think it more likley that they did offer it, but at a price that ChillFactore just decided wasn't economically viable.
It does seem like a decision that hasn't really been thought through in the long term though, since even though the immediate income from 5 year olds (or younger) may not be high, stopping them will also stop many parents, and if they start young, they may continue going, and generating more profits in the future.

The minimum age for taster lessons is 6. This is because they are mixed age lessons, both adults and children together.
Kids club (Saturday mornings) is for kids aged 4 - 15.
Private lessons (£35 for 30 mins) are available for kids aged 3 - 6.
I don't think Chill Factor e is unusual in having minimum ages for different types of lessons, ski resorts do the same.

beanie1, thanks for that. If the chap on the phone had been a little more forthcoming then I might not have been so annoyed - all I got was "Minimum age is 6", it wasn;t followed by "but you could try kids club or a private lesson instead". There's also the huge price hike to consider - £14 for a taster session vs £35 for a private lesson (shorter time but more personal instruction) vs £180 for kids club (who cares, I can't affrod that!). Sorry but I'm not made of money. Can't take him at those prices.

Perhaps you should try teaching a 3 year old skiing at GBP35 for 30 mins........ It will be the longest 30 mins of your life.......
GBP35 for a private lesson is, quite honestly, a bargian.

hello all;
living in manchester thought I'd take advantage of the Chill Factore place to warm up the ski legs for this season - planning a trip to Verbier in a few weeks.
The place has been open for a while now - have regulars worked out a "good" time to go? I'm guessing half-term wasn't the week to go... Fortunately I should be able to go off-peak so at least it'll be cheaper. Is it really "not-peak"?
cheers;
-chris

When i went to chill factor a while ago, i quite fancied a nando's afterwards.... couldn't as there was nowhere for us to put our skis and i didn't fancy leaving £400 of skis in the car for an hour or two. So we just went home.
Next time i go, i will definitely use the ski racks.... it was daft that they were never there in the first place.

Agree that they should have been there in the 1st place, but I cannot see anyone breaking into a locked car and nicking your skis. Where do you leave your skis when in a resort, probably in an unlocked ski room with no more than a combination lock on your ski locker for security.
Last time I went to CF I had 3 pairs of skis and a snowboard on the roof albeit on a locked ski rack (about 2 Grands worth) just parked outside Wetherspoons, it would have to be a hard faced Manc Chav to start messing about with your gear in full view of the public and security cameras. But I do concede it could happen, next time I go I will probably use them.
My original point was about all the moaning on here about them not being there, then now they are they are not being used .

Not hard faced, just a thief who would be in and off with your goods in ten seconds.
You must be a bit naive to think that something like security cameras would bother them or that a member of the public would even give them a second look if they were breaking into a car. A sad indictment on society but true nevertheless.

I made the trip and a good time was had
Inside things were pretty good - "expert" lift could do with moving a little faster though...
Outside was frustrating - Trafford Centre is definitely lacking in useful signs and then Chill Factore is "hidden" away at the back of the "Regional Sports Centre".
I'd echo earlier comments that its better to start earlier. I had a 1015 -> 1145 slot and things were definitely much busier in the changing rooms / equipment pick up area on my way out. Lifts were getting more full but didn't have to queue.
Snow was turning to more like "afternoon snow" as we left.
Will definitely make a return visit.

chrisss, good to hear you had a good time. Although I don't live too far away i've not been tempted yet, but, i'm starting to get a bit twitchy as my next snow will be the week before the EoSB! If only they did early opening every day as our office is 2 more junctions round the m60. Next Wednesday perhaps

beanie1, I had a look at it but it wasn't very well laid out and you couldn't book earlier than 2pm so I didn't bother.

beanie1, Yes. It is not well set out. You have to initially pick the two hour time slot that you want to start skiing and then you are given a choice of start time in 15 min intervals for your 90 min ski. Not brilliant but it does work.

kristof, If you were trying to book online the same day as you want to go then I don't think it will let you; you can still book by phone though if they have the slots.

Had a quick look - seems an illogical booking sequence to me. It asks you to select your time slot first, before asking you what activity you wish to do, eg lessons, but you have no way of knowing which activities are available at what times. It would be far more sensible to simply ask what you wish to do and then present you with available slots from which to choose.
