Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

In the vein of celeb spotting I was stood next to Sir Bradley Wiggins in the Baud ski shop on new years day , dressed in non ski gear as I guess he won't be allowed to enjoy the skiing.
My Daughter had a photo taken with Ed Westwick in the cavern bar on new years eve much to her excitement ,I have to say I had never heard of him Blush

Agreed, but the slopes are already going brown in the afternoon. Google had forecast 39cm of snow for last night, no idea where they got that from!

Perhaps they should be going into the Not the Weather Topic.

And on the weather it was a lovely sunny day today in Les Gets - must be better skiing around on not very good snow in the sun rather than in the rain.
We missed the rain at the weekend as have only just returned - what a shame about the Ranfoilly lift still not running, but having got onto the Tulipe run from the Mouille aux Chats lift I didn't bother another time but had quite a few runs down the Renardiere from the Grains d'Or. But when there are some very narrow bits of snow in places why do people decide that is where they will stop and stand.
Despite the sun it stayed cold so what snow there is remained and it is now minus 5.4 here at 7 p.m.

Pretty disappointed with the 'incidental' signage. We took super chatel with a view of heading to Switzerland, but all the links were closed. No obvious sign at either the bottom or top of the lift which I think was pretty poor. The static signage leaves a little to be desired too.

That apart quite a nice day, found some fresh in places, sunny and warm for most of the day. At the end of the day The busy routes home had got quite polished which caused some issues for people.

@bertie bassett, the signage is generally not very helpful - at the moment in Les Gets there are boards at some of the lifts just giving closing times but not very useful as to what might be open. My OH had seen on a website what he thinks were the up to date bits of information about the PDS iinks today - so we are going to try tomorrow and see if what we see online works out.

@igLou, ah, just back from a morning in Avoriaz and Switzerland. We are a bit slow off the mark this week as still seem to be on US time, but we parked at Ardent, no problems. Huge crowd of people then at the top of the Lindarets Express who had all come up on the new six man from Super Morzine side. We took the Crot down to the Grand Combes and the Bleu de Lac and then round to the drag up to the top of the wall. Top of the Bleu de Lac was busy and the snow was scraped off so I was glad we weren't hanging around there. Peaceful ride down the wall in the chair and the Swiss side was better than we had expected. Over to Planachaux which was fine at the bottom by the lift at that time but a bit browner and softer when we did it later. Coffee in the sun at the Toupin, - the café on the slope on the right of the Ripaille drag lifts appears to have been rebuilt since last year. Although the website says that the Ripaille run is open it is not. Eventually back along the Abricotine - and a quick drink at the Ferme in the goat village and the run down to the car at Ardent was absolutely fine.
Now we have to go out to the supermarket and eating out of the cupboard won't do when we have friends arriving tomorrow.

the boiler plate

was best forgotten. That was at the top of the Bleu de Lac and there were certainly people struggling on it. It generally seems to cause issues where it is crowded - on the emptier slopes then there always seems to be better stuff.

was Skullie Skullie in places!

Today was a good day for practising shorts down the piste edges and a bit of a potter off piste snowHead

Pre la Joux was busy today. I was hoping for quieter. Was chatting to Sandrine in PLJ Sports and she said it's because everyone from the Swiss side, from La Chapelle and Abondance, from Bernex and Thollon are all up here. She said the old people have been talking and Winter's not coming til March Shocked let's hope the old people are wrong Laughing I'd heard the farmers' predictions which are big dump end of the month Laughing

Piste report from Pre la Joux is that pretty much everything is very hard and scraped. There's a lot of very granular cannonned snow about which is actually fine on the piste edges. Lots of death cookies about. Beginner terrain is really suffering up there with a lot of bare patches. The main nursery slope hasn't opened so far as they are still working on the new magic carpet lift but there was a big bare patch this morning and a snow moving operation going on so maybe they are planning to open that soon. The shallower drag has bare patches. The lower part of the green track Bellette is now closed and the tarmac is visible Sad The home run of lower Rochassons is still open and coverage is fine. There are odd stones and 'tufty' patches generally around the area but not too bad. Perdrix Blanche is still closed not sure whether due to coverage or avi risk from the slope above. There's improved signage generally around the place with more 'slow' banners and some new 'beginner recommended route' signs. They are working hard up there. The access run to the Pre la Joux lift was closed with big bare patches when I came down around 2.30 so not sure if the lift was closed too or if you had to access it some other way, maybe round the back of the shop. It was completely rock hard and rutted this morning.

There are some bumps about if you want them and still some powder if you know where to go Toofy Grin

So looking on the bright side it was a lovely bright and sunny day and there was good skiing to be had snowHead

We've had reasonable ski-ing for the last two days in the Fornet bowl at Avoriaz. The top part of the runs down to Lindarets are one massive sheet of boilerplate with a dusting of scraped powder scattered across it. They are better at the bottom. Coupe du Monde and Lac des Intrets not much better.

Thought about going up to Plaine Dranse but were put off by the thought of the return run to Lindarets. Les Crosets better than expected, helped by the fact that very few people are there. Avoriaz however is too busy - hate to think how it was at Christmas - and there are too many petrified learners forced onto the wrong slopes by the conditions.

Busy slopes I can handle, poor snow I can handle, but both together and I start to wonder if it is worth it. We are taking it a day at a time - tomorrow should be okay although it is forecast to be colder than today, which won't help. Thursday, the Thermes Parc beckons, I think.

We are heading to Les Gets on Saturday. I was initially encouraged when I saw the forecast on the OnTheSnow site which said there will be 26cm on Friday. But they had also forecast snow last weekend which clearly never came! Meanwhile Welove2ski.com, which has more scientific forecasts from meteo France, are predicting no new snow. Getting to Avoriaz will be a bit of a challenge with 4 kids all under 10, and it doesn't sound like it's great there either. Sad

@sanman, the blue from the top of rochassons toward lindarets has been fine, done it every day this week and even twice yesterday

Went to les gets yesterday with a little deviation to take in a black at top of haut forts. Just death cookies mainly and not fun. Hadn't skied les gets before so good to have a look at it, but the snow was v. Poor. Even chamossiere only had the black open and that was gardening at the bottom.

Interestingly we felt the best snow of the day was in pre la joux.

@sanman, as @bertie bassett says the run from Rochassons back to Lindarets should be fine as it's in the sun all day so should soften up nicely.

@bertie bassett, agree the snow in PLJ is not bad at all considering. Pretty much all north facing though so staying very hard.

Looks like it's going to be another bluebird one today.
