Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

wigan, and a couple of friends visited Nevis today.

Braveheart opened late morning, and I dropped into the backs near backtrack after lunch, Took a few minutes to convince myself, but once commited it was a piece of cake, at least from that location/conditions.
Really enjoyed it, despite the refrozen snow There were a few tracks in the refrozen stuff, but whole stretched were fairly smooth. Amazing place to be, nobody around. According to the Lifty I was only the 3rd to come by, and nobody else came in until the lift shut.

The potential of the backs are just off the charts, in good snow it'll be like a mini La Grave, without the need for a guide (that'll be no suprise to the regulars), in todays snow I still really enjoyed the quietness, the whole backs there just for yourself.

Front of the mountain was doing alright. Nice granular snow on hard base gave me lots of good skiing on Goose and Summit. Runs along Alpha and Quad chair quite similar in condition, just a tad narrow near the bottom of the Quad. They kept Warrens off because of the run being too icy.

And the level of friendlyness from Lifty's and Piste patrol are something I only see in Scotland.

Ronald, indeed, Nevis should IMHO be promoting themselves as a back country place and run the Braveheart more than twice a season!!

A few lobsters around CairnGorm on Tuesday, those who thought, "it's Scotland in February, I can't get burnt" will have got a shock when they looked in the mirror this evening! Laughing

^Sanity returns to the Ptarmigan Bowl once the Ski Schools had finished up for the day!

^The queue for the M1 Poma at 3pm! Top lifts very busy during Ski School, but lower tows ride straight on, Cas and M1 never more than a couple of minutes of wait while I was there.

^Daylodge Poma was the place to be in the afternoon as this run faces directly into the afternoon Sun during the warmest part of the day, it softened up nicely.

On Monday evening the second of the half term floodlit night sessions on the 'Gorm took place under a clear starry sky, virtually calm as well and not cold due to the inversion conditions. Stay tuned for possible further floodlit nights later this month. A couple of pix from Monday:

Stunning weather on Monday on Tuesday in Cairngorm. Looks like it's going to be another blue sky day today. I'm heading over to Glencoe today so hopefully it'll be just as good over that side. This is my first trip skiing in Scotland and I'm really impressed, although I've been repeatedly told that these conditions aren't representative of Scottish skiing.

The snow cover is typical but the bluebird conditions overhead a little less so wink. Don't let that put you off in future though!

LOL quite right, we seem to be having a pretty excellent season actually, last season was ropey overall but with a superb end in April/May and the previous 2/3 pretty excellent with 09/10 being probably the best in living memory so actually not a bad record over the last few seasons with only one duffer. Based on what people have been telling me over half-term it seems that a lot of people are now considering Scotland as a viable (and considerably cheaper) option to the Alps, so long may this continue! snowHead

The difference between a good half term and a bad 'un is amazing.

Long season to go yet, not sure spring has quite sprung (and I've a lot of spring tours in mind)

I will remember this season for wild weather and wind, knackered a few days for me

Another half term bluebird day on CairnGorm Mountain, and happy to report that with the continuing settled weather, the extensive pisting is starting to bear fruit and surface conditions were actually better than mid-week and there's even been a dusting of snow in the last wee while Inverness - so maybe some might make it too the mountains! Though there is also two T40 snow guns going on the Sheiling Area of the lower slopes tonight.

^Working on the winter sun tan at the Top Station!

^Chicken Gully transformed since Tuesday when it was the definition of boiler plate. Still firmy, but gripp and immaculately pisted - could lay out some sweet turns here Friday.

^White Lady similarly big improvement in surface quality. Closed on Tuesday, now great run for more advanced riders. Home Road was excellent today, so could blast down the mid-mountain, out the Home Road to the Daylodge Poma (get a couple of laps in here as it's been consistently good all week), then drop down OverYonder and up the West Wall Poma. Has going round in circles ever been such fun? snowHead

If your after a more gentle cruise around the mountain, the Traverse onto the 105, dropping off that onto the mid third of the Cas then down Chicken Gully, then over to the lower Gunbarrel (which was collecting soft snow) was a good run on Friday and avoided the hard and rather icy upper part of the Cas and slightly polished top of the Gunbarrel.

Best of the overhead was in the West on Sunday, but all Eastern areas got a light covering of new snow. West may have more prolonged sunshine on Monday but it should be brightening up everywhere if the forecast holds. Looking ahead our resident high pressure looks like staying in charge of our weather through the coming week, so settled conditions with light winds expected throughout, so well worth getting out to play if you can. Half term is now officially over, so everywhere will be quieter this week, esp CairnGorm.

Apologies to anyone watching the webcams Mon, Tues and Wed from work, but it was simply two perfect bluebird days on Tues and Wednesday and surface conditions continue to come back to us. Though today's weak weather front has temporarily at least put the bluebird back in the cage, the more humid air coupled with the breakdown of the inversion conditions mean the snow pack is more generally loosening today rather than just directly sunlit slopes. The expectation from the forecast is that overhead will brighten up over the coming days again and the snow pack will more generally loosen up.

If the Eastern aspects of Meall a' Bhuiridh on Wednesday were anything to go by, then there should be some simply amazing perfect Spring Snow and with such an extensive and excellent base in place, this could be off the scale the next few days! snowHead

^Not quite the edge of the world, but the edge of Meall a' Bhuiridh. Patrol reckon upper pitch of main Flypaper line is 50º at present due to way the snow built up this season.

^Sweetest Spring Snow beyond the Flypaper on the East Ridge of Meall a' Bhuiridh. (Lift served but beyond the patrolled area which is delineated by the skiers right edge of the Flypaper bowl.

^The Plateau Chateaux.

^Plateau Runs all in great shape, beyond the Main Basin and top tows.

No blue bird today but I love skiing when its like this just as much. Some times its not the quantity of light it's the quality. From a wet start snow conditions came better and better during the day. I had this myself for a lot of the afternoon - Glas Maol (long red). Well maybe one or two others, the occaisional poma would float out of the cloud as I was heading up tow into it.

Looking up the main Glas Maol Red - rumour mill has it at 16machine widths!

Er, not quite swiftoid! When it's good it's very very good and when it's bad.....(100mph winds aside) it's still better than a day at work Smile.....

Here are a few pics from Nevis Range and Glencoe (27/28 Feb). Our first midweek trip for years and both areas virtually deserted! Fantastic snow too - both areas to be complimented on piste grooming Smile . Nevis Range was wall to wall sun and Glencoe foggy at times - still marvellous though. The extent and variation in terrain at Glencoe was particularly impressive - it's ski virtually anywhere at the moment Very Happy.

bobalexander1983: Brilliant day yesterday at Cairngorm. Foggy at first at the top but lifted to sunny spells in the afternoon. The cover is still very wide and deep on the runs - lovely granular/spring snow and top to bottom skiing.

Don't know if off piste is your thing, or if you know the off-piste up there, but (with skis off a couple of times for bare bits of a few metres in length) it was skiable to the Ciste car park yesterday. An epic descent on fantastic snow - down the right shoulder of the steep corrie to the far left of the Coir Na Ciste (whose name escapes me Puzzled) as you look up the mountain. We also skied down from Cairngorm summit into the gentle bowl that heads towards Ben Macdui direction. Awful snow at the top (re-frozen, rutted, icy, windblown) but excellent lower down then bearing right back to the top of the Cas tow on lovely snow.

Will try and post a few pics tonight.

See the weather's on the turn rolling eyes - but Tues and Wed are still looking ok on the forecasts.

Excellent hotel deal by the way wink.

The Laogh Mor headwall was simply fantastic as dusk approached last night, the spring snow was just starting to crunch up and was absolutely perfect. You can ski the full way to the Ciste Carpark on similar terrain to the M2 gradient wise via the Aonach Ridge and it's fully complete with mostly wide cover. Cut off OverYonder to the left where the obvious snowfield extends out to the fence line around the corner of the ridge. It looks from there as if there is no snow below, but there is all the way down to where the shuttle bus picks up. Unlikely to be a bus mid-week though! Sad

^Final drop down to the Ciste Carpark from the Aonach Ridge - your aiming for the link road, then a traverse along a snowfield to the shuttle bus stop. (Photo from Fri 22nd, didn't take any yesterday of here).

^About to drop over the edge of the Headwall in Coire Laogh Mor as the light begins to fade.

^Looking good - no2 gully was seeing action, but a few metres of walking and a bit of fence slalom required to get in.
