Again... they know where the toilet is, all they have to do is use it. As soon as they set foot in the garage of the chalet they become the responsibility of the snow club instructors, it over to them .

Lunch back at Plain Dranse and the skiing in light snowfall off and on this afternoon.
Snow all the way down to Linga was OK - scraped icy patches by 1600 but not too many stones/bare patches.
As we drove from Pre La Joux to Petit Chatel temperature varied from +2C to +0.5C and we had snow/sleet and rain at various points. Unless it gets quite a bit warmer the pistes will stay OK I think.

I was up at Praz de Lys Sommand yesterday, which is across the valley from Les Gets and at a similar height, and have to say that the snow there was pretty good in the morning. Today the snow condition report at Les Gets is 'Velvet' (at Praz de Lys they're using the term 'Humide'), and temperatures will probably remain above freezing. In the small village where I'm staying at 900m the forecast is for daytime temperatures to go up to 11DegC, which seems extraordinary for this time of year.

Back from a day of two halves. Started in Champery and skied around Planachaux, Ripaille over to Avoriaz, top half of Coupe du Monde then Fornet bowl and back to Les Crosets. All in pretty good condition though there are some brown patches. Actually pleasantly surprised.
Our mate missed the Champery train so we picked him up from Aigle and drove over to Pre la Joux. 5C at 1300m and I reckon it was warmer when the sun broke through. Everything getting a bit soft. Over to Avoriaz and skied the whole of Coupe du Monde - scraped/soft on the bottom part but still OK. By the time we got back to Rochassons it was rice pidding all the way to the car.
Hope it freezes overnight so they can sort the pistes. Verbier for us tomorrow. Height and N facing appear the secret.

DJL, I attempted verbier last year from Chatel. We went over that high pass in thick snow no problem, winded my way down to the valley floor on the other side and got on the motorway, after about 15 miles we had to stop driving as the snow was so bad and we turned back around. As soon as we left the motorway and onto the main roads we were fine again. Let us know how long it takes you out of interest, cheers.

Unfortunately Rick is right. The snow conditions are good at the moment but with only sun forecast for this week the already thin pistes are going to get some nice brown patches. You can see the latest video update from the slopes of the Porte De Soleil at http://morzineweather.com

Ricklovesthepowder, just back from Verbier - my timings were a bit off as it was an hour each way and we weren't pushing it (especially on the Pas de Morgins this morning with verglas everywhere)
Anyone on the slopes in PDS today? We've got until 1500 tomorrow before we leave and were thinking about a look at Torgon/La Chapelle.

Ok, time to engage.
Short break in Les Gets from Monday, skiing only Tue & Wed, but no car.
If I wanted to ski in Avoriaz, what's the best way to get across? Are the ski liaisons open? How long from Les Gets to les Prodains by lift, ski & navette? Is there a quicker public transport alternative? Where do I upgrade my pass & how much does it cost?
|
|
|

cardweg,
Skiing over is possible at present, but it may be quicker to use the Ballad D'aulps bus, depends where you are in Les Gets.
Ski into Plenay, take the road train to Super Morzine then Super Morzine bubble and follow your nose.
or take the A-bus to Prodains from Plenay bus rank.
No idea on pass costs. Sorrreeeee.

DallyPaul, Thanks Paul. I'm at the far end of Les Gets from Morzine, but on the navette route so access to the town centre is quick and painless. Where does that bus leave from?

cardweg, here is the bus timetable: http://www.valleedaulps.com/documents/documentation/documentation-BABHGB-UK.pdf and you will see that the bus goes from the Perrieres lift bus stop at 8.25 and then Gare Routiere at 8.29 - that is the stop that is just before the roundabout close to the Irish Bar and the bottom of Mt Chery chair lift. I think you can buy the one euro ticket on board the bus.

Hi folks,
Got back from 3 days skiing in the PDS yesterday. Took the laptop out but our apartment didnt have WiFi so could not get access to the internet hence no updates but i see that DJL has been updating and the reports were spot on.
Had a great trip (again) and got to enjoy some powder on Wednesday. The temperatures were all over the place and causing masive changes in the snow conditions but there is plenty of snow about. Actually with the new snow mid week and the changing temp's there had been a bit of sliding and Piste Patrol had been blasting on Wednesday morning -nothing beats getting woken up by an almighty boom (not that type of boom.. ).
Anyway thought it's also worth pointing out that when we landed in Geneva we were waiting for our ski's (for about 20 minutes after collecting our bags) at the oversize bagge bit by re-claim belt number 4. No skis were comming out and everyone was looking around when a brit walked past and informed us that the ski's were all comming out at the end of the hall down near belt number 10 (I think). So a quick dander down there and the skis were waiting for us. The guy driving our transfer bus said that ws causing them big delays this season because people are used to getting their gear by belt number 4.
Have fun it you are out in the PDS at the mo.

cardweg, if you upgrade your pass to PDS for a day, then (based on last years experience) you may get a discount if you do it the evening before at tourist office desk Les Gets but almost certainly won't get anything at all if you leave it until you get to Avoriaz/Ardent.

bert7cosby, if it's the same Chalet La Turche that I stayed in 12 years ago then it is very much ski in/out. It's near the bottom of the Melezes piste so a short trudge over to the Turche button lift or a slightly longer ski down to the Perrieres lift if you don't like buttons. When I stayed there we literally clipped our skis on sitting on the balcony at the back, swung our legs over the rail and straight onto the snow. This year you might need to walk over to the snow although looking at the web cam pic (look on the SAGets web site for the Perrieres Express zoom) the piste looks fairly well covered.

Last day for us until mid-March (boo!). Did an early start and were at Linga for 8.30 - pity the lifts open at 9.00!
A bit of fresh snow above Linga mid station but vitually everything Chatel/ Avoriaz was very icy some desperately so.
We headed up Mosettes and over on the Swiss side it was much better.
The run back to the car at Linga was no fun at all. It needs snow and soon!

Pamski, thanks for that link. My mates went out this morning & once they've got over Ulster's Heineken Cup win this afternoon, they'll be hitting the piste in the morning.
Lou, Appreciate the tip. Like teh Tesco ad says... every little helps.
Sunshine81, Likewise. Not taking skis on Monday, but will be next month. Good to know they'll be arriving somewhere else than usual.

Just back from the weekend.
Friday I didn't think it was that bad, went all over the place and had a fun day.
Saturday not quite the same
I've never seen so many helicopters in one day, nor collisions, nor people getting removed in body bags. Run down to Montriond was unreal, literally pure ice with patches of bunched ice! No turning possible for me, just point and hope! It was also for a Saturday really busy and I can only the assume the low lying resorts have all started heading up to the PDS. The run back to supermorzine was surprisingly in good nick but I was glad to get back in one piece.
Sunday, opened curtains to see first helicopter at 9 and just thought it's not worth it. Took the day off and went for a walk. It was positively roasting in Morzine today.
On the bright side I went and watched the ice hockey last night, the first time I've watched a game live and I loved it. 2 minutes walk from the flat n all. I'll be back!

Will S, I love to watch ice hockey though didn't get there this year. I do find it goes on a bit, but last year the match we watched went to a penalty shoot out which was cool, with the Penguins beating Chamonix

Well, what a fab weekend, just like spring. Saturday I walked the dogs in the early morning sunshine, followed by a lunchtime parapente, launching from the remains of the piste at the top of the first Super Morzine chair. In the afternoon I played tennis, in shorts and tee shirt, with the kids.
Yesterday I met up with some friends in Annecy to walk to the Col des Fretes, stunning scenary and not a snowflake in sight. Absolutely boiling at the top at 1600m.
Snow, who needs it?

zzz, you said you were going to be all enthusiastic this year, AND bought new skis.
What's all that about...

It's all about the snow, or lack of it. You can only work with what you've got
Anyway, I've been out on the new skis twice, beat the hell out of the bases so am back on rock hoppers until we get a base off piste.
Still enthusiastic though, just not at the mo.
You?
