70cm of new snow sounds perfect to me, I'll take that thanks very much
Jealous of all the waist-deep off-piste stories, I'm salivating at the thought of perfect conditions on our first day in Zell on Sunday.

Then overnight it dumped 30cm more down, so today we had the same start to the day, but the off-piste was just unbelievable. I had it to mid-thigh level, and in some places waist deep. Today we also ran down one of the few black runs here about 09:30, and it is the first time I've ever experienced 30cm of undisturbed powder on a 35 degree groomed slope . |
truly hero snow. if it dumps in tignes there's a slalom stadium - always groomed in the evening to billiard table standards. overnight snow = great for early laps.

BCjohnny, Soll is looking great, everything is under a 30+cm blanket of the white stuff! Been waist deep in some spots. Madness!! Really good base on piste now as it had been a bit brown a week or two ago.

Look this is all getting a bit unfair now. Note to MrSkis, I don't think I actually technically agreed to be 8.5 months pregnant in the middle of the most epic snow in Zell for, well...years. It better be this good next year when babyskis will be approaching 1 yr old and perfectly old enough to be babysat by grandmaskis.

Sunshine's forecast until at least Wednesday, and temperatures around freezing, so not that cold. Very cold at night though which is good for the cannons, if they're needed.

Fabulous Kaiserwetter today in the Skiwelt Amade - loads of soft new snow perfectly groomed where it should be and lots of untracked powder to play in if that's your thing! Temperatures below zero all day and down below 10 degrees at night. It is more of the same forecast for the next few days, though some local friends reckon that there is another dump of snow on it's way maybe the end of the week or so - who knows!

cad99uk, when are you out there? We skied the 4-hills route from Reiterberg and back on Thursday - totally knackering but loads of fresh powder for those who wanted it! We were pootling around Wagrain and alpendorf the last 2 days, off up to Zauchensee tomorrow before returning home tomorrow evening. Hopefully we'll cop some more snow as well. Back next weekend to play in paradise - easy when you only live an hour away!

Just got back from a quite brilliant week in Austria. We'd decided to leave booking until the last minute this year in the hope of finding powder. The day before the off (we flew out last Saturday), after studying the forecasts until I was blind, we decided that although not looking too promising anywhere, our best hope of snow combined with a decent resort pointed us towards Saalbach. Flights and apartment were hurriedly booked and the next day we were off.
Sunday was fine weather and nice snow, but nothing too special in comparison with what was to come. Then when we came out of the pub late Sunday night very much the worse for wear (actually it was early Monday morning as I remember!) it had started snowing. And other than a few brief pauses, it didn't stop for almost 3 days!!! Monday was great, Tuesday better, Wednesday unbelievable. We rarely saw the pistes (but when we did they were good, obviously), as the off piste was so amazing. Consistently knee-deep the first couple of days, by Wednesday it was waist-deep, and more in places!
Unfortunately the pics have not been sorted out yet, sorry.
A fabulous week and Saalbach did us very proud. 3 very happy campers.
Hope all of you heading out there this weekend have as good a time as we did...

I second Billy M, I also came back from a fab week in Austria (Zillertal valley: Mayrhofen, Zillertal Arena and Hintertux).
Sunday decent but slightly icy conditions, then it started snowing on Monday and it didn't stop for days. No massive amounts (30-40 cm I guess), but really good quality light powder. Visibility was quite good during the snowfall which helped a lot to make this a very nice week. Conditions are now good on piste, off-piste is tracked out and still has a rather thin base.

Got back yesterday from Schladming - have to echo everything said above - conditions are fantastic at the moment - 3 days of continuous snow led to some pretty epic conditions both on and off piste - in fact by Wednesday we were hoping it would stop so we could do some crusing as well. Full report to follow when I have more time, but all in all a great week - never been to the Amade area before - will cetrtainly be back again soon.
Unless conditions change dramatically there is more than enough snow to go around!

Slightly off piste...we bought flights to Memmingen some time back on impulse(cheapo) and are heading for a few days in March for a lads trip.
Just looking around now as to which resort to visit and a lot of head scratching as to where to go.
So I am looking for some help and guidance here .
We have been to the Zugspitz area before and really enjoyed it but looking for new adventures, I have spotted a smallish resort of Damuls
which links to another village and there are other areas locally. Anyone ever visited this area? I can see its not large or high but it looks pretty.
Other than there I guess there is always St Anton if I can persuade my tightish fisted mates to part with a little more of their hard-earned.
Unless anybody can give a better suggestion, please? Really don't want to be driving more than 2 hours at most and we are only skiing
for 3 days.

Leeds_Skier, Kitzbühel looking good, bit warmer but snow holding up well. Off piste tracked out, on piste mainly good with the exceptions of the high traffic areas. Possibility of some light snow this week, will keep you updated!
