Disruption due to volcanic eruption in Iceland
Situation at 11:00 am, April 19, 2010 --- The Airport informs passengers that following a decision of the Federal Office for Civil Aviation, Swiss Airspace remains closed until April 20, 08:00 am. This closure is likely to be extended depending on the development of the volcanic ash.
Passengers should contact their airline and check flight status information for all destinations.
Next update on 19 April 9:00 pm. |

Has the NATO test flight news not been in the UK media? On dutch radio at 4pm our time they said that two NATO F16s had gone up... one landed with glass in the engine. If I understood this radio report correctly are you SURE you want to be up there?

Can anyone help with what may appear a stupid question !!!, my flight tomorrow has been cancelled, there is room on the later flight, but this will be too late for the transfer bus, the Wednesday 7.35 flight is also showing as available, but I am not a dedicated enough skier, to go all the way there for just one day on the slopes, especially as Mountain Sun are offering a summer break in return for the loss of this one, so I am going to get a refund on the Easy Jet flight, but it will only allow me to do the refund for the outward bound flight and not the homeward one, does anyone know if I have to do this in 2 stages ? I did call in at the airport earlier who told me all refunds had to be done online and could not be done in person or over the phone, but all it says about the homeward flight, is no changes or cancellations can be made free of charge , the way things are going, I expect this flight will also be cancelled, but then again, will it be ??.
Any feedack available from someone who has already had to cancel ?
Thanks, Pippi

pippivixen, The way I understand this and from my experience with BA a few weeks ago is that you have to do it as 2 seperate trips. At this time they will not have announced that your return trip has been cancelled yet so if the return flight isnt cancelled you would not be entitled to a refund.

Linds, thanks for that, I suppose all I have to do now, is pray the ban continues, sorry to all those praying for the opposite effect !!
At least my insurance will pay up for holiday abandonment if the return flight is not cancelled and I am not there to take it, my friends insurance doesn't cover her for anything apart from medical costs, so she will get nothing back apart from anything EasyJet offer.

Yes, that was reported during the news at midday today.
I presumed it was referring to this Finnish story mentioned before:

that story about the Finnish fighters was mentioned on BBC as "breaking news" but it was on Snowheads yesterday.
I thought I caught the tail end of a report today saying that a BA test flight had suffered engine damage too - but I only half heard that.

pippivixen, EJ were saying this about cancellations on their website [quote]A full refund of the cost of your flight and any directly related unflown sector within the same booking (if applicable), back to the original card your flight was paid with (please specify details under "Other" on the bottom section of the online refund claim form), [quote]

The latest mapping from VAAC suggests that, from 1pm (BST) tomorrow, GVA will be just clear together with the UK about as far south as Birmingham. Trouble is, to get from on to t'other will involve climbing over 20,000 ft in between. IIRC, such short flights don't normally get so high but perhaps they will make the effort.

BBC version of the map:
However, the plume over Ireland seems to be heading East so the window may shut again just as quickly. Fingers crossed for you Dwarf Vader
I was on the phone today to a friend who travels a lot for work. Originally he was in Copenhagen but when he got bored of that he hired a car on a one-way rental and drove to his parents in Germany. He soon bored of that and was on his way to Bruxelles to get a Eurostar and then a train to Manchester to recover his car. He seems to be enjoying the challenge of it all. He mentioned that there are lots of folks stuck 'in transit' at Frankfurt Airport (I think) and the German authorities won't let them out. Now that is awful.

My brother in law was stranded in Moscow, he has taken a train to Latvia and is now on a ferry to Stockholme. He should be home in Brussels on Wednesday evening - quite a journey Another brother in law is currently driving from Budapest to Brussels so he can catch the Eurostar back to the UK

Dwarf Vader,
vol, nm. 1) flight 2) theft
informe as shapeless - priceless more like!
I think you probably got the gist, but -
"The airport is pleased to announce to passengers that the Civil Aviation Authority will reopen Swiss airspace on Tuesday, 20 April at 0800. This does not mean that all flights will leave from that time. Passengers are therefore requested to make contact with their airlines and to monitor flight status information for all destinations"

BA hoping to start operating from 7pm tomorrow - fingers crossed
From BA website....
On Tuesday 20 April, we will aim to operate
•all longhaul departures that were scheduled to depart after 4pm and
•all shorthaul departures scheduled to depart after 7pm.
This will however be subject to the full and permanent opening of airspace.

NATS UPDATE
Quote: |
Statement on Icelandic volcanic eruption: Monday April 19, 2200
Since our last statement at 1530 today, the volcano eruption in Iceland has strengthened and a new ash cloud is spreading south and east towards the UK. This demonstrates the dynamic and rapidly changing conditions in which we are working.
Latest information from the Met Office shows that the situation is worsening in some areas. Based on this information, the situation for Northern Irish airports for the morning is uncertain, due to the new ash cloud. The latest information shows that Scottish airports should be available from 0700 and more airspace over England may become available from 1300 although not as far south as the main London airports.
We will continue to monitor Met Office information and the situation is likely to change overnight. We will make a further statement at approximately 0300 (local time), tomorrow, Tuesday 20 April and again at 0900 (local time).
NATS is maintaining close dialogue with the Met Office and with the UK's safety regulator, the CAA, in respect of the international civil aviation policy we follow in applying restrictions to use of airspace.
We are working closely with Government, airports and airlines, and airframe and aero engine manufacturers to get a better understanding of the effects of the ash cloud and to seek solutions. |

The problem, according to Sky, is that in the next two days we are locked into a wind pattern straight from Iceland to the UK, if it goes off again we're directly in the firing line.

I've been trapped (!) in Les Gets for 5 days and just had to ski to take my mind off cancelled flights, ferry bookings and so on, I even had to go up to Avoriaz today. Tonight we saw 5 planes overhead so it looks like things are going to return to normal soon.

bertie bassett, one of the aussie forum guys has a wife and daughter that have just headed from UK to Melbourne. However wife is very pregnant with second child and if she is not back by early May will not be allowed to fly. Last I heard he was madly trying to book her on a flight to Rome so he could drive there and collect her.

Alexandra, yup, Finnish jets were F18s, NATO jets F16s. Finland is not in NATO.

little tiger, Up date on the girls is that unless they can fly all the way to London the won't be loaded, so the plan for flying to Rome is no go (QANTAS actually told her that Rome FCO was closed, which is rubbish.....) They are now back at Mother in laws, so safe and sound, but I just want them home.
