Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Great to see lots of folk here have been out and about. And quite rightly so - what a weekend! Perfect powder and sunshine. Spent Saturday at Nevis Range, and Sunday on the 'gorm.

Here's Saturday's pics... I've put 2 pages of photos up here:

Great conditions at Caingorm yesterday again. Sadly my second day up there this year and once again the railway packed up for most of the day. It puts a hell of a strain on the remaining pomas and t-bars to get everybody up leading to queuing. Its just so disappointing when the only really decent bit of kit they have packs up. However great blue sky day, great snow and good fun regardless.

Fifespud, I gave up on the queue at the end of the day and walked part way up to collect my pack. The weather and snow were the best I have ever had at Cairngorm.

Looks like another blue sky day today (and could be tomorrow) - I'm tempted to drive back up there now!

Fifespud, IMHO the best route up is via the Daylodge and West Wall pomas if they're running, tend to be less busy then the M1....

The Braveheart Chairlift is down to open on Tuesday!! A day which promises more of the same on the weather front, so if you can get up to any of the five Scottish Areas on Tuesday, DO IT!!

Unsettled weather moving in during Wednesday, stormy later in the week with further snow currently expected for all areas, but weather could ease for the weekend, certainly one to keep an eye on for the weekend powder hounds.

Spoke to a few people on T-bars yesterday on CairnGorm that were up from around London for the weekend or even long weekend on the ScotRail Sleeper, all having an amazing time having never skied in the UK before. Though one did admit the first day was a bit hazy and perhaps they should have kept the apres in the lounge bar on the sleeper for the return journey! Laughing

Also for those going on about the price of food and drink in France, you can get a 'small' portion of a main meal in the Ptarmigan Restaurant at CairnGorm Mountain for £3.95 and it's more than adequate when riding without being completely bloated for the afternoon.

Great mountain day yesterday in Drumochter. Out with my mates James and Guy. Skied to the West of the A9, skinned up the top of Sgairneagh Mhor and then down. Superb snow - about 3in of soft powdery stuff on top of hard pack. Really fast - skied like a dream - and sunny all day - and no wind - perfect mountain day. A couple of other parties out too

Looking at this report from today, it seems that Cairngorm have decided to model themselves on a Euro Alpine resort ...

Looks absolutely wonderful & as we're approaching the best and quieter half of the season and with another couple of big snow dumps to come over the next few days, things should only get better and better. I just can't believe how lucky we are to have these resources on our doorsteps. Very Happy

I think the 18z GFS has gone off on one, 70cm of snow for the 'Gorms this week!! Plus the 18z has changed the wind direction to SE'ly gales for the second half of the week, if this forecast holds it will be the Big Dig Part IV on CairnGorm Mountain!

You also have to bare in mind that given the last 15 seasons it is a miracle (not to mention the dogged commitment of many individuals) that here are any operating tows in Scotland whatsoever.

I had decided that I would never ski in Scotland ever again!

Well done folks.

As far as I can remember there were two appalling seasons in the early naughties and there might have been some in the 90s too (I definitely can't remember though), hardly 15 consecutive bad seasons though (unless you mean in terms of falling skier numbers?) but the last few seasons have been pretty okay on the whole with some reasonably epic late season conditions.

This season however is simply unprecedented in terms of amounts of snow, consistently low temperatures and pretty much anything else you want to mention, it seriously doesn't get better than this. I just hope this represents some sort of lasting shift in weather patterns because even going back next season to what had been a good season up until now would be a real downer on what we're seeing now!

However I agree that those who stuck by Scottish skiing over the last couple of decades (I've only been back for 4 years so can't take that accolade) should be applauded.

Oh and talking about unprecedented the webcams are showing yet another bluebird day with low/no wind, is that 4 days on the trot or were Thursday/Friday bluebird too? I was there but have forgotten ... so many excellent days! snowHead snowHead snowHead

Roga - I completely agree that although there have been one or two bad seasons in the last 20, there have been some really good ones too. I was still skiing Cairngorm in mid April last year and 2008 was also a fairly long season!

Yup, I remember lapping the back corries on a bluebird day at the end of the season that april. I;m sure the only closed due to lack of numbers rather than snow.

In the last 10 years, I remember 01 as being an epic, Cairngorm only shut at the end of April so they could start building the train. 02 and 04 were pretty crap though I think?. 03 was pretty bad but mostly cold and dry, snow cannons would definitely have saved the day that season. 05 had a really good 6 week spell in Feb/Mar but there wasn't much of a base and a savage mega-thaw mid March practically wiped out everything. 06 was poor early season but really good late on right through March and April. 07 and 08 were ok-ish I think, 09 was pretty good and 10 has been the mother of all epics.

easiski, Very Happy Actually I think he was mostly following mine on the steeper bits but it's a good taste of off piste for him. We had a look over the back and while there is a more or less cornice free way into Chancer at the moment, it's still very steep for the first few yards.

brian, it looked too lairy for me on Sunday although I noticed that the snowboarders seem to find these entrances easier than muppets like me on 2 planks. They just seem to lower themselves into it and use a vertical slide down until they find a gentler gradient. Incidentally, I don't think the two folk in the far background of my photo right next to Chancer realised they were sitting at the end of a piece of cornice extending about 6 foot out of the mountain. Shocked

Brian - pretty accurate report.

My main point being its pretty difficult to run a business which at best has about a 4 month window, when every second year is a disaster and half of the good ones only give you a 2 month bash. I wasn't actually meaning there haven't been good seasons, or even good spells in the bad seasons. However it has been a long time since you could seriously rely on decent conditions at any scottish resort.

I just thought it was worth mentioning those who have given so much to keep, particularly the smaller resorts functioning.

However some obviously disagree.........

There must have been nearly a metre at the resort itself!!! read the report guys, anyone heading up there this weekend will be in for a bumper one!!! http://www.cairngormmountain.co.uk/

Fifespud, I don't understand your point at all. Here in LDA we have a 5 month winter season, and OK, with the altitude we'll always have 5 months of opening, but I was working in Scotland inthe 80s which are constantly being held up as being a 'heyday' for scottish skiing, and we never consistently had snow across the ridges. It's normally gully skiing, and frequently adventure skiing. The scottish skiing industry has enough problems without holiday skiers being told that it's been disastrous for years, when it hasn't.

Praise what's there and the fact that you CAN ski for 2-4 months of the year - don't slag it off if you can't. We all have poorer years.

Must be good - mentioned in midtable on SCGB summary:

The end of this week sees one of the biggest dumps of snow in Scotland for a long time. All five main resorts are closed due to extremely heavy snow and high winds. The snowfall is also affecting access roads but when the weather clears the skiing will be comparable to top powder resorts in the world, especially considering how the snow drifts at the Scottish resorts.

and all the Scottish resorts in the top 10 snowfall in the world this week. The first time ever?
