thefatcontroller, Great pics, thanks for sharing them. You must have iron hands in those cold temps. Blue skies again today, not quite as cold. Could do with some more snow but the pistes are still holding up well in the cold temps. Had a lazy day, lots of coffee etc and not much skiing. Good to be able to rest for a while. Anyone around PM me if you fancy meeting up.

Hey - quick heads up for people in the area.. Derby of the Derby on Wednesday 14th Jan - saw this in Les Petits Journal but I'm not going to be in LA this week, as am in Cham on a clinic.
Teams of 2, sign-up at the bottom of the Derby from 1pm to get bibs/numbers. Then the game is to put in as many laps of the derby from 2pm over the next 90 minutes until the derby finishes. You need to wear helmets to be able to take part, and I guess it means that bellette, renard and bosses could be pretty frantic during this time (if you don't compete!)
For more details - check http://peisey-vallandry.com/documents/100109.pdf and go to page 3 (note 3.5mb pdf file)
Team snowheads anyone?

bertie bassett, well spotted, last year it was fun, but a little crazy. Of course the local ski club kids won. (FIXED), not really, they are very good. Not doing it myself but will go over to watch for a while maybe. Have a good course in Cham. Who are you doing it with.
Today the sun is still shinning. The last few days have been very sunny with clear skies at night making it very cold. The settled spell is continuing for the next few days but they do say change is coming. jskierpx, Nice French. Sking on piste is ok. They are very hard and icy in the mornings but getting softer in the afternoons. The large snow falls early in the season is making it possible for the pistes to be kept in good condition in most places. The snow part above Arc 1600 is being extended and the boarder cross in Arc 2000 is fun, but very easy. Skiing off piste is very varied. Still some softer snow in sheltered gullies where the wind has blown it. The open areas are very cruddy with wind slab and hard crust. Not a lot of fun. Let's start praying to the snow gods again that what comes is enough to change things and it does not all get BLOWN away again..

what is the lift pass to buy for Les arcs?
|
|

jtobin03, It depends on your urge to cruise and previous visits. Personally I tend to go for the Les Arc one, and get extensions for trips over to La Plagne. I think I've said it before, but if you find you are spending all your time in la P , then frankly, you are staying in the wrong resort!
A Paradiski pass is also more expensive (e.g for 6 days €243 vs €203) than a 1 day extension at 26.50... ( mind you having just looked those prices up on the website, they don't seem all that bad, in relative terms anyway)
But there is plenty to do with plenty of variety: off, on, steep, shallow, smooth, mogully, in trees, between trees, in bowls, parcs, boarder / skier-X all in the Les Arcs domain, on about 280KM of pistes, so you don't really need to go over to La Plagne, unless you feel the need for change for change' sake
Unless of course you are doing the Villaroger - Montalbert Challenge...

jtobin03, Depends how long you are staying and where. If you are in Peisey Vallandry near the connection for the other side, and staying for two weeks or more then the paradiski is worth having. If you are only out for a week, then the explorer pass which gives one day in La Plagne is the best value (works out about 16Euro extra instaed of 26.50 for the day I think. You can always then buy extra days in La plagne if you want them. Hope that helps.

Still resting but from what I have been told tonight, conditions still much the same today. Sun shinning, hard icy pistes in morning, softer in afternoon. Not very windy. Good for cruising around but off piste very limited. Forcast seems the same for the next few days. Still hoping for a change.

Hi All,
Just back from a week in Chamonix and a week in Les Arcs. Still ignoring the euro rate and rise in lift passes in Les Arcs.
Pics from the week here:
http://tinyurl.com/lesarcs
Nothing to say that thefatcontroller hasn't covered. Good base being maintained thanks to cold weather but really could do with some new stuff. I went down some of the shut runs like bois de l'ours - I know it well after skiing in LA every year since 96. Picked a route from the chair and went for it. Fun to do - icey in patches but sheltered stuff was still quite nice and forgiving.
Some good runs into the 2k bowl. Rare to see that black Genepy open so early in the season. Had fun down there (see video) with some pretty intermediate skiers. Also some good stuff just skipping to the side of the piste on Grand Col (favourite run of resort).
Lots of Russians as reported, but they seemed nice to me. Friends who run chalet in La Plagne (plug - mountainsinc.com) report increasing numbers, spreading out from Courchevel thanks to airport there.
Sorry I forgot to post while in resort. Doh!

snowcrazy, sounds all good roll on some fresh snow, (snow in the evening, clear blues sky's during the day!! not much to ask for hey;-)) Yep, chains on board just in case, i suppose the drive up from bourg is totally clear at the mo though?

nisaacs, due to multiple start points I'm flying from Luton, then driving from geneva. Others are training, flying from Newcastle and flying from the US.
Snowcrazy, hope I can get up the hill before the chains are needed! Always the Super-U I guess (for the hire car - which will have winter tyres - its from Switz) and last time out the gendarmarie let us through with a 4x4 and winter tyres... Oh well, if we have to abandon at the bottom and get the funicular, so be it - at least it will mean good snow!
(PS: Strangely, I rather like bump fields, don't say I do them well, but do enjoy)

bertie bassett, welcome back, hope you enjoyed Cham.
As bertie bassett, said, no snow has not come yet today but it does still look overcast outside. The French meteo are predicting snow down to 900m but now it is for tomorrow afternoon and a bit more on Tuesday. I hope they are right but wno knows!! Still there is a good covering on the pistes and even the off piste is ok later in the day, well just, if you are careful where you are going and avoid the rocks. Not tried it myself today, but this is what those I have just had a drink with told me.

Snow started in Peisey at about 11.30 a.m., and hasn't stopped since, now 2.30 p.m. It is fine and dry and is building up nicely. The temperature is currently -1C, just right, on our balcony at 1,700 metres. If this carries on all night, could be a big dump by tomorrow! On Radio Les Arcs, this morning, it forecast strong winds , up to 70 kph higher up, so could be drifting a little, but who cares, it's new, dry and fresh...

Jamie, Got that right, snowed right up to about 4pm. then stopped for a while and is snowing a bit now. Was pretty windy however, and the upper lifts were closed (top of transarc, renard etc) but still the link via the arpette was working. Fab day out working on 'lumpy' / side-piste technique... But the wind was scouring off the snow in exposed places, so the blue off to the top right of the derby had become a bit of an ice rink - hopefully they'll be some more overnight and then the pisties can sort it out for the morning...

Slightly OT for 'snow reports' but..quick (retorical) question time..
Say the Transarc upper section has been flagged as being closed at the bottom lift, then a bit later in the day you are at the top of the vagere and see the upper bubbles moving..
How do you tell whether they are letting punters on the lift, without skiing down and having a look?

So, an interesting day in the 2000 bowl.
On waking this morning, Arcabulle, Varet, and all points north closed due to high winds. Lanchettes closed. Ronaz running as the only way into Villaroger. Snow start about 10:30 am. continues till early evening.
Wind begins to get up lower in the valley, closing all lifts by 15:30. So, we were making our way back from villaroger, and to come into Pre St esptrit, along with 200 others mainly ski school who have come down hill from 2000/1950: only way back is via bus... which of course, is already full from 1600. They started running a shuttle service from 2000 to Pre St Esprit. Thanks goodness for French attitude to H&S...
But the powder in villaroger was great, as was beer in Solliet. No-one there, 4, 5 inches on piste from the day's falls, lovely fun.
Wind still high in the village tonight, so not going out, but drinking from Super-U supplies from valley. Doesn't seem to be snowing, difficult to tell, as windows comepltely blatted by wind-driven snow.
Mountain weather is awesome!

My 2p
Just back from a week in Vallandry. As a piste cruiser I was very happy with the conditions, lots of sun and the pistes were in excellent shape. Usually a bit icy in the morning but softened up nicely by the afternoon. Helped that it was really really really quiet
More snow is certainly required though as there were one or two bare patches beginning to show through - according to the Ski Instructor, that would be Tuesday onwards.
Still I had a great week and am a happy bunny
