Just got home from Chantemerle, am knackered after 7 days of fabulous skiing - and despite the hot sun all week I thought the snow was fab. Must be overdue some more now though?

Hi guys! We had a fantastic time last week as well but it seems to have gone so quick. I'd waited for the predicted snow fall for Thursday but gave up and took my monoski out for a thrash around the top of the Frejus and across to Chantmerle and Briancon. It was good fun but would have been better with some fresh snow. Snowangel, came looking for you at the ticket office at Monetier on Sunday 17 Feb but it was so big a queue it was impossible. We went to La Grotte for a drink Wednesday night after a meal at Le Frog and a guy behind the bar (short dreadlocks) said you played Thursday about 4.30pm but we ended at Briancon and went into an estate agents. As a result we looked at a house Saturday morning before leaving midday for the UK and a 2 hour delay at Grenoble due to problems with the plane leaving Manchester. Grenoble....now that's what I call an international airport! Didn't have the energy to make it to La Grotte Thursday night but my son did and he enjoyed the Black & Blues Brothers. Now we're looking in earnest for the right property to ultimately live in, ideally around Villeneuve. I've to see if we can sneak back, maybe after a dog show we plan to go to in Montlucon on 16 March. Still, best wishes to all those lucky enough to still be on the piste. Regards, Kneehigh

are the locals aware of an snow frecast.seems like a long time since the last fall of snow. snow-forecast suggests a negligible dusting of snow and cold temperatures. what do the locals think. 5 and 3/4 days to go

hey dan100,
I'm headed out to serre Che on the 15th, it look as if most of the alps should get a reasonable amount of snow this week, let's hope it dumps eh!
Anyway, I have question's for snowangel., I've been lurking in here since Christmas when i booked our trip and your updates have been good, noticed you've gone quiet the last few weeks so hope all is well!!
I need to get my board waxed when i get out to Serre Che and was wondering if you know of a good place to get it done, I'll be staying in Villeneuve so anywhere local to there would be good. My group gets in on Saturday night and so i'll be looking to get it done first thing Sunday morning.
Also you've mentioned that you work in the ticket office? Just wondering if you reckon it's worth buying my lift pass on the bus (first choice) from the airport or locally (are the queues huge on a sunday morning)? How much is a 6 day pass in euro's? I understand you get a day at either Alpe d'huez, L2A or Montgenevre with it?
Also have a couple of n00b lasses coming along and wondering if you have any recommendations of a boarding school?
Hope to see ya out riding some time!
Looking forward to hearing ya play at the pub also.
Thanks in advance for any info you can provide.

poolprouk, you can buy your pass online but I think it needs to be a bit further in advance. Buy it on the bus if it is the same price, 181 euros. Snowangel. will be busy working for the lift pass office in Chantemerle. dan100, we haven't been up the mountain yet, but it was hellish warm today, more like April, and off-piste is not good.

poolprouk, hey sorry for being a bit quiet i'm totally rushed off my feet at the mo! Just finished with catered clients as well as working which takes it out of me! Not even looked at the m ountain let alone got up there!
6 day full area pass is 181e, gives you the extra day in montgenevre, sestrier, les 2 alpes, alp d'huez or puy st vincent
i dont know if first choice charge you more for the pass or not. If your in villeneuve i'm not sure of how big the queue is on sunday mornings but i suspect if you get therer early ie 8.30 it will be fine.
I'm normally around and about in either the grott or the extreme bar.
will hopefully get up the mountain after the 9th but next week i'm working for the park Asterix so wont be doing much riding.
Anwyay have a good stay all that are coming, glad those that have come and left had a good time too.

ThanksHelen Beaumont, & snowangel.,
Your help is appreciated. Had a look at the first choice website and they quote a an area lift pass as being £126!!! therefore it looks like it's cheaper to buy from them direct before we go.
Where would you guys recommend to do a day trip too? Last year we did a week in L2A so would probably plump for Alpe d'huez or Montgenevre for something different but am open to better suggestions?
I like the beanies by the way, my gf is in the market for a beanie for our trip so i'll get her to take a look.

that's because the prices were set before the exchange rate went south. I have booked mine direct with Crystal for canada for the same reason.

Very warm today, but the pistes are holding up well.We stayed high and stuck to the Monetier sector. Yret and Cibouit Rouge, were excellent first thing , softening up towards lunchtime.Black moguls under Cibouit chair looked horrific, and the Col du Vent even worse. Lots of bare patches on the off-piste. It seems to be cooling down and clouding over, which can only be a good thing, as it was 15C at 2000m at lunchtime.

TallTone, I really hope so, off to stay in Chantemerle for a week on the 8th!
BTW, are there any climbers reading who could say if there's any ice climbing around at the moment? My OH is hoping to be doing that for at least half of the time we're there but is getting a little bit worried about the temperatures and amount of ice around. Sorry if that's a stupid question, have not cleared the terminology with him and little idea of what I'm talking about (just picking up a general pessimism).

which forecasts are u looking at- I've seem some for negligible amounts of snowfall on Tuesday and perhaps on Sunday. I'm sure there'll be plenty of skiing but would like some fresh stuff to liven things up tho its a week away from work and I can cope with sitting in the sun enjoying a beer as well

Just got back from a couple of days skiing in Serre Chevalier (Tuesday/Wednesday), and one day in L2A (Monday). First time in either resort. Conditions in L2a were Suffering due to the warm weather - turned colder now, so at least what's there might be holding up a little better. Serre Chevalier was something of a revelation. Large, very diverse skiing area, and generally very good snow conditions right down to resort level. Skied from Monetier over to Villeneuve on the first day (not without complications which I'll be posting about on the reviews and questions thingy a bit later). It was pretty cold, especially going back over to Monetier, and a little on the bleak side as cloud was swirling around. Next day we started out in Villeneuve and ventured over to Chantemerle for a play around. Had some really good skiing. though in the afternoon Villeneuve developed some lengthy queues at the lift stations which took the gloss of things a little. All in all though I liked the resort a lot, and would be very happy to go back again. Some of the lifts could do with updating, but hopefully that'll happen sometime soon.

chris, thanks for the offer of showing me round, pity it didn't happen, though the snow wasn't really up to too much. Hope that your back is better now.
Got back London way on the weekend and I'm really missing being in the mountains. Loved Serre Chevalier, though I got a bit bored of skiing on piste, and my knees really weren't up to the hard bumps on the off piste, or the heavy spring warmed snow. Ended up skiing as fast as possible down Casse de Boeuf, which was fun when at the beginning of the day without crowds, quite liked cucumelle and even choucas when they were slushy, and for general lack of crowds the Briancon side was pretty good. The hotel at Frejus was quite a common lunch / snack / end of day beer spot as most people missed it and the food was pretty reasonable.
I'll definitely head back Serre Che way at some point, maybe for a longer period so I can guarantee some decent snow, 'cause it looks like there's acres of off piste to be explored.
On an aside, has anyone skied La Grave? I went for a wee look up the mountain, without my skis, and the terrain looks awesome, though it probably isn't advisable to ski on your own there. Can you join a guided group or must you go with a group and hire a guide?
Ali

alisim, sorry it didn't happen. I've been out of action for 2 weeks now and think it will be another week before I dare venture up the mountain. Next time then. Have a look over in Trips ( in Snowheads index) at the La Grave thread. Some very useful info there. Cheers.

dan100, it looks as though we could be getting some fresh snow Sun/Mon /Tues. My wife skied yesterday and said the pistes were in great condition but until fresh snow, she would avoid off-piste. PM me your phone number and I'll contact you if I'm able to get up.

Much milder and cloudier today. Flat light on the higher slopes, but OK in the trees, so we stuck to the Monetier side. Snow was much softer than the last couple of days. It was great this morning, but getting a bit cut-up this afternoon. Some new snow will really improve things. chris, hope the back's better soon. Must meet up in April even if it is only for a beer in the sun.

snowangel., Do you know where the new lift would be in Briancon?
How reliable is the snow in Briancon? I would imagine it gets a lot of sun and gets rather slushy. Is it worth skiing that far corner?

depends when your talking about
it was great begining of season, but gets slushy first, what its like now i have no idea.
I'll check it out on monday i'm sure, i intend to do the whole lot from one end to the other and half way back again!
i have missed my mountain massivel and i intend to have one hell of a couple of days boarding when i finally get back up there
