Hi,
I am going snowboarding for the first time ever on Saturday. We are off to Mayrhofen and I have been looking at the forecast and conditions, etc. Should I be concerned about the lack of snowfall?
I get the impression that it is going to be mega busy there as well and that we should perhaps explore some of the other slopes.
Any advice you can provide will be much appreciated.

This is probably going to be a ridiculous question but, what is the difference between a ski run and a ski route? i.e. the yellow lines?

Ski Routes are usually secured (made safe from avalanches or closed) but not pisted or patrolled.
Exact definition can vary from resort to resort.

Just got back from a week in Zell am See. They're doing a good job of maintaining the pistes, but they could do with some nice fresh powder. Black 14 was sheet ice towards the end of the week (they put the warning signs up the day after I skied it )

just back yesterday from mayhrofen and would not recommend the ahorn run at the moment, great start to the week last week but slowly becoming very patchy at the moment. Best runs are in Hochfugen near the new zilertal shuttle.

skewen, not really swansea!!
its very icy and artificial snow is not the best, not looking good for the forecst either. Best runs were in Hochfugen and hochzillertal, but would not recomend any runs down to the village!
Am sure by 1st March there will be snowfall though!!

chuckball28, I was in Mayrhofen during the same week. I stayed in the Hotel Strass right next to the Penkenbahn gondola. I didn't ski the Ahorn but skied Penken, Horberg, Rastkogel and Eggalm. I skied all the reds and blacks and a few of the blues, the only runs I had any grief about were red 5 on the Eggalm returning to the Rastkogelbahn which had patches of exposed mud and grass, but no rocks, and black 12 which had a few exposed rocks near the bottom. Felt like crying when I saw the exposed rocks because I was skiing a pair of new Dynastar Legend 8000 Fluid skis, lovely! No damage to the skis though.
It was my first time to Mayrhofen and a lot of people had commented on the long queues for the Penkenbahn before I went, this is probably true if you are arriving at the lift around nine, not that I would know because I was there every morning at 0800hrs for the lift opening and didn't queue once. Being on one of the first gondolas also meant that we could ski red 5 down to the Schneekar, red 27, red 7 and black 17 all before 0930hrs and with only a couple of other people on piste. Absolutely perfect!
It does get a bit busy on the Penken runs at about 1530hrs and caution is needed because of tired skiers and boarders, I got hit in the back by a boarder when I checked my speed on noticing a group of little kids skiing down piste, thankfully no injuries though.
I've been a really big fan of France until now, I skied Solden once and wasn't impressed but a mate convinced me to try Mayrhofen and I love it. Although there is more to ski in the 3 Valleys or Espace Killy, Mayrhofen has plenty to ski and costs significantly less. I will definitely be returning.
As for the supposedly infamous 'Haraikari' steepest slope in Austria, it's a lot of marketing, steep does not mean hard and the steep part is probably only a quarter of the run.
Anyway sorry for procrastinating, the snow is pretty good on all runs with only lower runs starting to get a bit exposed. Hope you have a great trip.

Arrived home from Ellmau (Ski Welt) on Saturday. Conditions all week were absolutely fantastic, 4 days of sunshine followed by 2 days of pleasent cloudy conditions with an ever so light sprinkling of snow. The snow making facilities in this whole area really are keeping the place alive, as there's a lot of grass showing through off piste. Temperatures were quite cool for most of the week to let the snow canons do their thing, however our last run down on Friday was dreadful. Temperatures were 12degs by day and the whole lower pistes had turned to slush. So much so that the beginners area resembled a lake by the end of the day (did ice over at night time). Would not like to have been going out on saturday 23rd, but i'm sure we'll hear...
Ellmau a terrific place by the way, can give a full report if needed!

Just back from Saalbach yesterday, conditions are very very spring-like!! very warm throughout the day with alot of slush in the afternoon. But I must give huge credit to the resort, I think there were only 2-3 runs closed in the whole resort and they were the ones with no snow cannons.

Just got back from Saalbach too, some of the warmest conditions I have skied ! great resort just a shame that it was either icy or heavy slushy snow that made most runs bumpy by 1pm.
But looks like snow all next week so will be good for anyone going next week

Based in schaldming, a little further east. Heavy rain and snow higher up today with sring winds closing some lifts. The snow that did stick today was very wet and heavy making for some of the hardest skiing i've encountered, maybe my skis need waxing. If forecast to be beleived then from tuesday onwards winter returns with cold and snow, would be most welcomed, though having said that there is still plenty of skiing to be had at the moment.

Im just back from saalbach too!! and as others have said it was a very warm week. The start of the week being hotter and gradually cooling throughout the week with a modest dump of snow by the time we left at 4pm sat, and with it lashing down with rain all the way to airport maybee a bit more of an accumilation.
As others have also said they kept most runs open though they got very slushy by midday. However the whole mountain shut due to wind on sat so my final days skiing ended abrubtly at 11am.
Because of the slush and bumps we decided to go to kaprun glacier on monday and tuesday and I must say the snow there was superb as well as the sun, so a great two days there. Though was a bit of a trek on the bus's (1 hour)

Have just come back from Mayrhofen yesterday and have to say am really surprised at how warm it was there!
Ignoring the total farce of a return journey caused by Monarch not being able to take off from Innsbruck when it's a bit cloudy we had a good holiday.
Sunshine almost every day for the whole week but the snow is definitely showing signs of wear now had temps of 17 degrees on Tuesday on the slopes and members of our party headed into town to buy cooler ski wear - no need for thermals! Don't think that it was below freezing at all while we were there so by 11am most of the slopes were getting soft and by 2pm were well slushy. There is still a reasonable base of snow but by Friday we were having to dodge stones and grass patches on some of the pistes although there was enough to make sure that all of the runs were open. I reckon that another week or so they will have to start closing stuff.
Went up to the Hintertux glacier and the snow was much better up there although they didn't seem to be expecting so many people to be making the journey so the few coaches that did arrive were crammed full.
Had rain at the top of the Penken on both Thurs and Fri with some very light snow at the top so I was glad that we were leaving this week and not arriving. Fingers crossed for lots mor snow, am off to the Alps in a couple of weeks!

Local weather institute reports that cold weather with snow arrives on Tuesday in Austria.
The highest temps are -5C at 1500m and -8C at 2000m.
Wednesday looks even colder and also good chance of snowing, -13C at 2000m.

10c in Saalbach today.....ouch !
foxyfox FYI Innsbruck is one of the hardest airports in the alps to operate in and out of, shame the pilot didnt tell you guys what exactly was happenning !
We were stuck on the ground at Salzburg as the wind was 40mph gusting 80mph as the tail end of Hurricane Emma went through. If the weather was the same in Innsbruck you are quite lucky you didnt get airborne !!

With wind speeds of up to 124 mph, thick clouds and torrential rain in the Austrian mountains on Sat it's no wonder some planes had problems.

Hi guys, first report here for me. We're at Solden, first day skiing today, and what a great day!! I think they had some fresh stuff (?5-10cms) up high over the weekend. Can't believe how big this mountain is and the snow quality for what has been a relatively dry last few weeks. We normally ski in Nth America, so must admit I miss the trees a bit, but can handle that if the snow stays this good. Fingers crossed for some fresh stuff in the next few days.

I've only flown into there once, in quite reasonable conditions, but the pilot nonetheless had to abort landing quite late (undercarriage down, not far from touch down) and go round again. You only have to look at that valley.... Departure delayed 6 hours by poor weather too. If you fly to airports with little tolerance on weather, you take your chance. Chambery has the same problems, chances of being diverted to Lyon etc are quite high. But driving can be subject to big delays if weather is bad, too. Given that our sport requires bad weather in order to dump the stuff we ski on, you have to take the rough with the smooth. And a good book.

very warm at zel am see today. 17c at top of areitbahn I at about 1pm apparently - i reckon their display must have been wrong but it certainly felt like it could have been. nice weather today though and all lifts running so it was better than yesterday but its just way too warm now, very thin and patchy cover all over. i was in a long-sleeve t all day today. its not really possible to ski right down to zell village anymore, as all of the lower trails are either closed or will be very soon so we have to download on one of the gondolas and bus it back. there is cooler weather and some snow expected for the rest of the week but in all honesty i cant seeing it making a difference unless it blizzards for a week straight. we were advised to give kaprun a miss as well, apparently the glacier still has good snow but was very busy today. we might check it out tomorrow weather permitting. we're doing saalbach on thursday, which is predicted to be sunny after the snow tomorrow and wednesday so hopefully it will be ok.
also talk about a dogs breakfast at salzburg airport on saturday - over an hour and a half wait to collect board bags! i mean i know they had some bad weather and the airport was closed for a couple of hours so they were backed up, and yes i know its not the tour operators fault but yet something similar happened 2 years ago when we went to la plagne with them so next year i think we'll skip the flight/transfer and i'll get some ski racks for the car and we'll just drive i think, either that or not fly on a saturday.

Update from Solden: Has been snowing all day and some great new snow up high. We found some lovely stashes off piste, knee deep in some places (surprised that not many others go there??),but after lunch it closed in and we were skiing by touch, so called it a day around 3.00pm. Still snowing lightly in the village now. Happy little vegemites here

My only time using Innsbruck was perfect weather and the approach was still pretty nuts! I hear that pilots need special training/accreditation to be allowed to land there due to the difficulty of the approach.
I have had exactly the experience you describe coming into Salzburg though, in not dissimilar conditions to that video of Hamburg - shear winds rocking the plane like crazy. No wing/tarmac contact in my case but still pretty scary/exciting.
