Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Fantastic photos, fantastic conditions - what a shame the Aonach poma isn't operational any more, the bowl looks great! The West Wall looks steeper than I remember it too. East wall gullies - wow! And some peeps say it's rubbish in Scotland! Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

What do you lot think of the chance of skiing next week (from around the 30th untill 6th)? I could persuade some of my non-skiing family to go to scotland for that week but not the alpine resorts, so is there any point? We could get a cabin for 300 GBP near Glencoe for that week, so it would be cheap.

What do you think?

hughbedo, from our trip at the weekend, I would say it would be an excellent time to go. Glencoe in particular is loaded with snow and Nevis also had plenty. Check planned opening/closing times for the places you plan to go to.

Have a look at Roga's last post in the Trips thread - full report of our weekend in case you need more persuading!

Nevis was great today blue sky no wind and very very nice snow. Don't know how much was fresh and how much windblown overnight as I didn't start skiing till 11am but seemed to be about 3 or 4 inches of new snow hence the snow in the morning on the goose was super. Went for a look over the back at about 12.45pm but chickened out rolling eyes still nice spring snow in the pm on the front side.
Freezing level was at or above the summit today so after a freeze tonight it my be a little firm tomorrow morning.

Sorry to miss you II.

I skied Easy Gully today (it isn't easy, it's a grade I ice climb so it's easy for the climbers!), as well as Chancer etc.

Doesn't get much better than this, and far FAR better than the Alps. Not even joking with that one. Back corrie were steep and deep. Just the way I like them.

hughbedo, Glencoe is amazing and there's loads of different lines you can take down the hill as well as off piste, the Haggis Trap website has lots of useful information about this.

However, if the Back Corries are open at Nevis you'll get epic stuff there too and there's some nice stuff in the main ski area too especially if the current conditions are anything to go by.

There are plenty with more experience of the two than me but that's my take on it Toofy Grin

Wherever you go have a fantastic time snowHead

Cheers all.

stevew, well the last photo on the second page was taken 20m beneath the top of Chancer looking across, so if that gives you an idea of the gradient in that section of the back corries Wink On Chancer it's a near or vertical or overhanging entry with the cornice, dependent on where you drop in, though there's broken sections where other people have gone in making it easier. It's the more difficult line in Coire Dubh (the ski patrolled back corrie), and the likes of Backtrack usually has an easier entry.
And yes, Easy Gully is an ice climb (grade I - hence its name. Easy to them, not to us!) so is every bit as steep as it looks! I've had my eye on it for ages, the cornices at the top change so regularly and sometimes its a definite no-go so there's been times I've had to walk away from the top. Great to finally have the opportunity to ski it.

norris, hmm the likes of Glencoe, Nevis Range and CairnGorm will probably close late April, they may even stretch into early May. The last forecast I saw said snow, I say jam on!

hughbedo, depends... Glencoe is based around gullies and lots of natural terrain features, with steeps and technical off-piste lines on offer. Amazing fun, and one of my favourite resorts. BUT. When the Back Corrie at Nevis Range is open, there's only one place I'd be travelling snowHead

To be fair at the moment they don't need to, plus the snow levels at the moment mean that the wwpoma is the best bet. But it won't always be so, especially later in the season when the gulley will still be skiable the poma track will break, and then the chair would be a godsend, though it would mean a walk from the gulley to the chair.

I was there yesteraday (thursday), absolutley the best . Spent most of the day lapping the WWpoma, and didn't the queues get long - I must have had at least 6 people in front of me on a couple of occasions wink. Ciste Gulley was in great nick, also managed a couple of runs down the Aonach bowl thanks to Les pointing out there was decent cover there if you picked the line well. I entered via the M2 at the top of the Aonach poma and traveresed right out into the the middle of the bowl where there was a nice line down some large patches of powder linked by narrower areas.
The East wall gulley of the Ciste was good as was the West wall. There was also some nice pwder on the East Lady starting off Lady Luck, though the rocks weren't far below the surface.

All in all a gerat day especially as there was no wind and the sun came out in the afternoon. Topped off with an evening ski around the Clash, also on really good snow.

The routes on Haggis Trap look amazing. I have done a fair bit of what I describe as off piste in california, the fire break at Heavenly and a fair few interesting lines at Kirkwood. Nothing that looks as extreme as Creag Dhu Chute. I guess these routes should only be done with full kit including avalance transponders and more difficult to aquire a group of people who know how to use them. Is it possible to get a guide who would supply the kit?

This photo makes it look really steep and normally in photos the steepness tends to be flatten out, so this must be steep! The more I look at it the more scared I become.

Jamie - Good work getting the tick on easy gulley Very Happy
Looks like there werent any climbers foot prints to ruin the fun either - which is always a bonus.
Reckon last time I have seen conditions like that over the back of Aonach Mor was maybe 2001 ?

Top stuff - and even though I am currently in Switzerland its makes me happy to see such great snow back home.
Perhaps even better than anything I have skied in Verbier this winter wink

Hello Scot-skiers - I'm venturing up north on Thursday's sleeper for the first time (i.e. first sleeper; first time skiing in Scotland; first time going to Scotland, which does seem to shock people Toofy Grin ), and staying in Aviemore. If any of you are about and free to ski 4-6 April (II's said he hopes to make it on Sun 6th) it would be lovely to meet you! Cool Cool Any suggestions about great runs to try (colour immaterial) or places to eat on the mountains very welcome too! Very Happy snowHead

definitely check out the bar in the cairngorm hotel, great craic, good food. quite a few other good places to eat too - Old Bridge Inn, La Taverna and Royal Tandoori all favourites. Cafe Mambos bar can be good too if busy. as far as the skiing goes, great conditions to see most of the hill right now, especially on the Ciste side - which aint always the case over the past few years - Ciste Gulley, East Wall gulley #1 etc. Plus plenty of scope for touring on the plateau if that's your dealie. Grab yourself a couple of bottles of the local beer too - the "Sheep Shaggers Gold" is quite nice Smile

enjoy

"Winking Owl" (nr top of the town) - for good beer & food; and nice Scottish Snowsporters/Climbers relaxing environment
"Happy Haggis aka Harkais" (just up from La Taverna) - for great friendly fish and chips; has a licenced sit-in area

BTW: Mambos has free wireless internet for "working from home" Madeye-Smiley

There is a thread in the Winterhighland "Bothy" area about good places to eat in Aviemore, but the forum is down for the moment Sad

Another blue sky day at Nevis Range with a little fresh snow overnight and more snow blowen in to freshen up the runs on the upper half of the mountain the season just keeps getting better and better. The snow above 2500ft was really good and below that grippy and getting a little spring like towards the end of the day.
