Update on conditions in Avoriaz/Chatel Linga all of which I skied on Thursday and Friday.
Best Run - the Linga downhill - top to bottom very good.
Best Area - Chatel Linga and Plaine Dranse - quiet and snow is better than that in Avoriaz with less icey patches
Best run in Avoriaz - Le Crot - Avoriaz to Prodains - empty piste and great snow cover
Best run in Linga - see above#
Looking forward to the snow on Tues and then looks like it will be set in from Thursday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Linga sector was deserted a week ago. Do most people in Avoriaz get a local pass rather than PdS, so they can't go down the Swiss side or into Plaine Dranse/Linga? Dunno what the relative costs normally are, but on the discounted days a week or so back, PdS was 1 euro more than Avoriaz - a euro well worth paying to skip the queues and open up the empty sectors.

andy, The locals and weekend holiday home owners can get a special local pass for the season which covers Morzine/les Gets and Avoriaz - THIS PASS IS NOT AVAILABLE TO HOLIDAY MAKERS!
We always recoemmend our guests get a PDS pass as it is only just over the equivalent of a PDS upgrade for the week and means you have no restictions.
Avoriaz also sell a 'weekend' pass which is reasonable and so many of the Genevois and those from Thonon and Evian come up for the day/2 days and get this.
HENCE - AVORIAZ is very busy at the weekends...

Just got back from 6 days skiing (Sun 27th->Fri 2nd) in PdS, based in Morzine, and I have to say I was actually pretty pleased with it all.
Les Gets/Pleney had mostly turned into a scrappy mess by the middle of the week but it was OK on Sun and Mon morning... and I was very impressed by what the pisteurs managed to do with Pistes D+B off of Pleney given the thinness of the base.
Virtually all of the pistes in the Avoriaz sector were good, though by Friday evening the bottoms of the runs into Lindarets were looking a bit agricultural in places. IMO the best runs in Avoriaz were Stade d'Arare (particularly in the lovely powdery fenced-off bit), Fornet and Abricotine. Le Crot was also a great way to ski down each day. Super Morzine was looking dreadful though.
Plaine Dranse/Linga had the best snow with heaps of powder on Linga and great conditions on Rochassons down from PD (we skied down that about 5 times :->).
We ventured over to Switzerland once (Thursday) and found that the runs on the eastern side of Les Crosets -- down from Mossettes and Pointe de L'Au) were dreadful from about halfway down -- a mixture of icy sludge and dirt, but we persevered and once on the other side of the hill, skiing down to Champoussin, things were much better (I'd even say they were 'good'!). The western side of Les Crosets looked to be in good nick but we didn't ski on that side. Didn't make it round to Morgins but I heard the snow's alright there.
All in all we had a great week! Thank god we weren't there the week before!

Got back from Morine half an hour ago. Spent most of the week on the pleney sidw as my parents were learning but did go over to Avoriaz for a day. I found it very icy compared to two weeks ago, went ove rto les Gets side on pleney was very good in parts but hard to get to because of lack of snow. All in all a good week, would recommend it to anyone. Good for the family and not bad for nightlife but no Val D'Isere. Having said that I'm 36 and am too old for all that anyway!

Hi, I've just noticed alot of talk about Les Gets here. We're heading there in a weeks time, and I'm somewhat anxious. Having never been to PDS before, I'm asking for any advice/suggestions that people have to offer here: http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=23828
Cheers in advance folks...

Just got back from a week in Champéry on the Swiss side of the PdS. By Saturday, Champoussin looked pretty much completely bare, as did Planachaux. The bottom section of the Mossettes, Grizly Hutte and Ripaille pistes were also mud/slush/ice. The upper sections of Ripaille were excellent all week with areas of powder off to the side. The snow in Avoriaz was generally better but it was much busier. Lindarets and Ardents were very good; even on Saturday. The pistes towards Linga were generally good but there were two patches of horrendous mud/rocks. The worst was at the base of the red which returns to Pré La Joux. There were large rocks exposed on a steep icy slope; surely enough to close a run? La Crot was superb given how low it is and not at all busy either.

I too just got back on Saturday lovely weather and enjoyed the Linga vallley early doors, down to Chatel was fine and the skiing off Mossettes also good. Used super Morzine every day and the run back below the chair was eventually closed on Thursday when a number of people maanged to fall over in the mud patch that once was piste. The conditions could have been better but then again we could have 5 days of white out which on balance would have been worse.

bedfordblue, Just got back as well and agree with the above - unbroken blue skies more than made up for sometimes thin conditions and the need to get over to Avoriaz/Plaine Drainse 3 days out of the 4.
Also of note was that I've never been made to feel so welcome in France as we were in Morzine - I guess that's the difference between real people in real businesses and bussed in minimum wage slaves in the purpose built places.
Lots of info picked up on here was also very useful so thanks to all.

zzz, You'll laugh at me zzz but my one trip in it from Prodains to Morzine was so unspeakably ghastly that on all subsequent occasions I made the trip back to our hotel near the Pleney via the far longer walking, downchair & bubble route over the green slopes of Super-Morzine and then across town in the Petit Train!

red 27, I agree, much nicer to sit on the sunny chair down Super Morzine than join in the scrum at Prodain for the bus. As an added bonus, Les Grenouilles above the S Morzine bubble not too bad for that last G and T before sunset too.
cheers

Afraid that I'm still "confined" the Pleney - so not much to report. Pleney B is holding up well. Err....
We're all holding our breath for the 2-30cm of snow that is "about" to fall...

doctor_eeyore, Snowing at about 1100/1200m. Banging it down in Les Gets - has been one comment this morning. I ventured up for just over an hour but numerous calls and the wind and bad visibility convinced me that today should be an office day.
Locals reckon next week is the big snow week - we'll have to wait and see!!

I can confirm that it was indeed both snowing and raining on Pleney today - with a rain / snow boundary somewhere around 1200m.
The group I was ski shadowing made it over to Nyon today and it's the first time I've been over since early January. Gosh, it's a mess over there. The run down from the top of Troncs is a nightmare - but the snow on the lower runs running back to the Fys chair is a testament to pisting skills and is absolutely lovely.
Against common sense, we spent most of the day on the lower section of the Pleney stade - the bit that runs into town. Why? Well, they've been pisting it like mad in preparation for next week and it's extremely well pisted at the moment, but has been a tad icy. The rain this morning softened it up nicely into lovely, grippy "hero snow" - which is perfect for practicing short turns down the fall-line and synchro skiing.
The snow around Pleney is extremely mixed. At the top it's very sticky - so sticky that I was having skating at the top. The top section of Pleney B is really nice, but then turns into a wierd, smooth polystyrene / ice thing. A bit like skiing on plastic ice - if any of you have ever had the mis-fortune of skating on it. The lower sections of Pleney B are then a little slushy, but nice a grippy.

You're welcom doctor_eeyore.
Book early if you want lessons at Easter. BASS are very good and I recommend them. But ESF and E2SA also have some very good instructors - some of whom are British-trained, but who can't yet work for BASS because they're not fully qualified yet - both snowandtrek and I can give you some names if you want to go that route.
(Fortunately you won't get me even if you book through BASS - I won't be qualified to teach in France even if I pass this round!)

Just to add to everything which has been reported - snowed quite heavily in Chatel today and still chucking it down now (19.40). I had to clear about 15 cm off the steps at about 17.00 - 100 steps to our front door hooray!
One of our guests came down from Pre La Joux and said it was getting pretty deep at the top.
An odd thing I discovered this morning - after it had been snowing quite heavily in Chatel for about an hour and a half (8.30/9 this morning) I spoke to a friend over in Morzine who said it hadn't started yet. Odd how it can be so localised. We haven't had rain here either, but that could just be the 200 m difference in Alt.
The forecasts are looking good for the end of this week/next week, although my gnarly old weather guru in the village has predicted an average Feb and loads of snow in Mar/April.
We'll see...
Looking forward to getting out there and reporting back on the slopes.

I can confirm that Nyon was a mess last week we foolishly though that the lack of skiers over there may mean better conditions, we were mistaken, just glad they were hire skis.
By the way we paid the extra insurance for damaged skis at Felix, I wonder is that insurance just a con or has anybody had any experience of it being invoked?

And I finally made it out this afternoon. Lots of lovely powder to be found and conditions on piste generally very good.
Lower off piste areas and high traffic pistes still a bit rocky and thin in places but overall an enjoyable couple of hours.
And as I type, it has just started snowing again.

SP1R1T,
Think it might be an idea to wait until a bit nearer the time and then just go where the snow is best. You're lucky to be in that situation. I've heard the La Plagne is looking good and Flaine is not bad either.
Fingers crossed the temperatures keep cold and the promised snow doesn't fall as rain - talk about glass half empty!!! But we've seen it before this winter!

I know it is snowing in Les Gets - according their website there is 30cm at 1172m and 35cm at 200m. Then I received the following in an E-mail from Total Ski which says Les Gets has 80-90cms on the upper slopes :-
"Ski Holidays in Les Gets, France
Following recent snowfalls, the area's upper slopes have 80-90cms and the lower resort runs 30cms. At just below freezing, temperatures over the next few days are perfect for the further falls of snow forecast for the next 2-3 days."
Is it really that good up top ?
