Pamski, what a shame about the bug - not to mention the bump on baby's head. Nice to see the snow! Get well soon.

No weather news is good news: Everyone must be out skiing rather than, in some cases, complaining about lack of snow.
22 sleeps then Chatel

Just back from Pre La Joux (used bus this morning as roads were tricky) - and I have just cleaned off 30cm of fairly wet snow off the van roof - so with compaction and the wetness (as its above freezing) it looks like it has snowed at least 30cm at 1200m in Chatel.
Still snowing hard. More info from up top etc later.

I've heard it was 30cm too and some power disturbances in certain areas in Chatel this morning too, we are off tomorrow morning, just packing now

At Plaine Dranse after a day of poor visibility and constant snow. I couldn't open the roofbox until I'd cleared the snow and we also avoided driving down from Petit Chatel. Certainly 30cm at 1300m first thing and I reckon more at the top. Still a bit warm though.
Vin chaud going down well!

My guess would be 40-50cm so far at the apartment in Morzine. It started snowing at around midnight and there was 20cm on the balcony handrail when I woke this morning. It's been puking all day and the balcony handrail depth hasn't increased at all as it keeps falling off the top. The temperature dropped quite slowly yesterday and I'm guessing Avoriaz is good for at least another 20cm on top.
Looks like it's going to be bluebird tomorrow.

Judging by what is now back on the van - it looks like this could be a 40cm event at 1200m in Chatel in the near future!!!

What a difference a day makes. I would estimate about 60cm up top and 30cm lower down, which will make a huge difference going forward.
Snow pack very unstable, so care needed, but should make for some good skiing.
Enjoy.

Another 12cm measured on van roof so that is 42cm of measured snow at 1200m in Chatel so very likely due to compaction and wet nature of it, that approx 45cm has fallen since late yesterday eve. Higher up is more difficult to gauge and I did try and measure a few spots near the top of Linga and the Combes chair which was at 45cm or so this morning, so the estimate of 60cm by Bob in the post above looks about right.
edit - and it is still snowing.

Any advice on self catering in Les Gets. We've stayed in Stella and Christiania before but looking to do it on our own terms this time around. Only two requirements are free wifi and as close to the slopes as possible - the missus doesn't like walking

zvordauk, our chalet is available that week but as it sleeps 8 it is probably too big for you We do have wifi - only for social use i.e. not guaranteed for running your business for a week but doesn't fail us. Walking - its 200 metres along the road to accessing the piste by the school and then sking down to the lifts.

Apparently it was very crowded in Les Gets today - my OH and also daughter and SIL were out. The Chamossiere did open and was a bit of a battlefield - they scooted round the side as much as possible - but were pleased that the Vorosses was finally open and they could have a late lunch at the Paika. Lovely to walk through the village this evening and see it all white and sparkly.

Pretty busy in Chatel as well and the traffic around 17.00 was horrendous. Hope it is better tomorrow.
Slopes generally in decent nick though Itineraire from the Combes lift had a few rocks and the run below Plaine Dranse was a bit scraped.
Might give Super Chatel, Chalet Neuf and Morgins a go tomorrow.

Thanks Pamski. It is only the two of us so I guess hiring the whole chalet would be out of our price range but feel free to send DM me zvordauk at mac dot com. I don't need bullet proof wifi just good enough to check mails etc

sarah, I've only been in Pre La Joux and Linga so for. A few nice runs are still closed (Rhododendrons, Perdrix Blanche, Renards and the steeper stuff at Linga). I think they may have been saving some for this week. Red runs down through the trees to PLJ are also closed but the signs were widely ignored. 0c when I went for the bread and a bit cloudy with the odd blue patch.

Avoriaz yesterday was absolutely rammed to the gills. Went up from super morzine, the queues for the chair up to Avoriaz proper took us roughly 20 mins to get on. Once we got there however, conditions were lovely, particularly higher up. A shout out to les trappeurs though, who were clearly training new staff - the service was monty python esque - the shout out is to the head waiter, Spanish gent who tried to keep us sweet via chocolates for the kids, aperitifs for the grown ups. I actually will go back and give them another go, simply because he was good.

It is rammed in LG, parking has been a nightmare all week but I think I'm just going to avoid the village totally for the next week.
For anyone visiting resort please, please, please use the footpaths, the amount of people walking in the middle of the road is causing me to get very gaellic with my hand gestures and is the major annoyance/danger for people driving around here. Well, that and the fact that a lot of drivers don't look at the give way signs and will continue along the flat road rather than giving way to those coming from uphill or down.
I get that it can be difficult walking in ski boots but it's a lot more difficult for me to swerve or slam on the brakes when coming around an icy corner and keep my kids safe, so, you know...
zvordauk, I've found the LG website very good for searching out SC accommodation - http://reservation.lesgets.com/en/accommodation?filter=g%3D69406%3Bc%3D14741&search=s%3D20140208%3Be%3D20140215%3Bp%3D2%3Bc%3D14741

MeMyselfandI, get used to it.
For some reason people on holidays in general seem to feel that this means that being hit by a car won't hurt. Or they come from countries without cars.
But it's been that way forever and I don't see it changing anytime soon.

Well we had a lovely blast round Morz/ Les gets/ Nyon this morning - up early on the new Pleney and headed down into Les gets - up around the bowl, over to Nyon side and up to Chamoissiere - which had the best snow by far but also the highest number of completely useless skiers who seems to like to go down together in waves and fanny about alot. Then headed back around Pleney and down into town for a giant omelette in La Remise.
Snow in Morzine on Pleney side looked pretty rough in some areas (Piste A/H off the top of the bubble - normally a favourite but I wouldn't bother) I'd say it's holiding up well but needs to get colder and have a bit of fresh stuff to stay skiable for the next few weeks.

under a new name, wouldn't be at all surprised if it was avalanche risk at the top. Bottom part was still full of rocks. People skiing both of course.
The new extreme sport in Chatel appears to be road skiing (presumably on hire skis) which slowed up the already dire traffic on the bus from Pre La Joux to Linga. On of thr lifties was delighted to see it as her husband is a "skiman" in one of the village shops and she is sure he will be kept in gainful employment for a while.
We're up at Super Chatel today. Runs on the Morgins side need more slow but the other beginnerish bits are OK with the odd rock. Not been up Morclan yet (don't think it's the place for my second weeker nephew's last day) and according to the board all the runs to Petit Chatel are closed though the lifts are running.
It's above zero I reckon and stuff is melting (certainly in the sun) hope tonight brings us a bit more snow

DJL, More on the way tonight 10 to 20cm for 1200m and potentially 30cm above 1600m. May rain at 1200m for a time before turning to snow. Further opportunities for snow on Wed / Thurs and next weekend.

I've just emerged from a bar in Petit Chatel and wet snow is falling - must say I didn't notice any rain earlier. About 1cm on the wet ground and the cars are sliding about already.
I'm rather torn - another 5 days skiing so 30cm overnight sounds good but I have a run to Geneva to deliver my sister's family for their 11 am flight. Nice to have the snow but with the pass clear. If it's properly deep I suppose the valley road makes more sense. I really don't want that snow chaon carry on.

Soggy snow is falling, which is good because I like to ski, but bad because many of my friends are transfer drivers and have had two very long days already...
DJL, I'd go the Thonon route, the road to Taninges was dire today without any snow.

10cm at 1300m in Petit Chatel but rather wet snow. I'm sure there will be considerably more higher up.
Could well be the valley road in the morning then a sprint back from the airport to have a go.
Why does it always snow on big transfer weekends?
