No intention of going off piste but good to know pistes themselves are in good Nick, was concerned they would be bullet proof and solid

I think snow can be found off piste, its simply where you go. Piztaler Glacier, right down the road, is buried in snow. Off piste will be fine their. If snow is not so great and your stuck mainly to the pistes, take a day trip to Piztaler or Kaunertal glacier.

Awesome day today. Skinned to the saddle below the summit of Hochkarspitze and then skied back down to Rendl. Good powder most of the way down and the tracks through the trees had plenty of cover. There are some rocks about but they're not that difficult to avoid.

Was just starting to rain as I left the pub last night about 12:30, but between then and me waking up at 8am it has changed to snow here in resort. Not heavy by any means, but there is probably about 1cm on the roof opposite me (where there was nothing last night).
Spar in St Anton is remaining open (for the time being), despite bankruptcy proceedings having started at the end of December.

Spar for the 2nd time (diff franchise owners). Difficult for them to compete ALL year round with M Preis & now Billa. Many loxals drive down to Lidl & Hofer (Aldi) in Landeck.
I can see the site being sold & another Hotel going up! You heard it here

More likely that Billa will buy the site if it goes up for sale surely?. Where they are at the moment is tiny.
|
|
|
|
|
|
Yeah, I reckon they'll sell it and put some new €1000 a night apartments up there. I doubt it would be cost effective for Billa to move there, surely the price will be too high? Do all the British chalet staff still shop there? No idea why they didn't just drive down to Landeck, with the queues on a Friday morning it would probably have been just as quick and a lot cheaper.

The St Anton TO twitter says 10cm on the mountain last night? Is that right? Not enough to cover the rocks off piste but should make nice corduroy

Chalets only really the shop for top-ups and last minute items, most stuff gets delivered to the chalets by Griesseman, and Spar do a delivery service for the chalets too. None of this wasting a day/half day malarkey going out shopping like they do in some resorts.
I'd imagine there up is about that up the mountain going by what there was this morning at resort level. Might still be snowing higher up but here in resort it's turned to sleety rain, the snow that was on the roof opposite this morning has gone.

If the chalet staff get stuff delivered how do they steal discarded till receipts to "help" their accounts (I guess Spar have itemised receipts now anyway so that scam won't work so well)?
Never had deliveries when I were a lad, I used to spend most of Friday driving around in my van running the gauntlet of the police by parking up outside Spar... as soon as the chalet girls turn up the police left me alone though, I think they were pretty terrified of our staff (I know I was).

If memory serves me Family Murr own the land where the Spar is ( they own a vast land parcel in Gries).
I expect the Spar will see out the season just do as much business to pay its debts.
The Billa site is excellent, right on the main road, parking you couldnt ask for better but that is because a Bank owns that site & they financed the new building!
Snow Update
High Temperatures will abate Monday night. Tuesday Snow but not any kind of major dump. Maybe 20cm (max)

Weather situation is fluid. We should still get some ankle dust on Tuesday
But im afraid it will be followed by the dreaded Hair Dryer coming from the south for the rest of next week.
Powder Hounds will have to continue to be patient ...

The routefinding on that hocharspitze tour is dead obvious once up there. The entry to the last bowl can be a bit side-stepped if theres been a group before you. Only followed it back to st j, never back to rendl. Board tho.....
Skinned up rossfall to top at 2732m col then rode back down to milking station. All heavy, some nice turns, some crust, some breakable crust then heavy glue. A real mix. Light was a bit flat. Until i finished......

All the forecasts I have seen say there is a lot of snow due on Tuesday. Bergfex is saying 20cm and Netweather is saying almost 30cm, so Markymark29 it looks like your record might continue which I am very happy about since I arrive on Sunday 19th

stanton, beggars can't be choosers. We'll take what we can get, and be happy about it. I expect to do no off piste when I arrive in a week, but it's not the end of the world. Hopefully, when I'm in Disentis in February or Chamonix in March, I'll get some pow.

Some snow is better than no snow. I didn't head up the mountain until late today due to work, but a friend of mine who went up first thing said they were solid and icy, better nice they'd had chance to soften up a little.

stanton, wouldn't 1 metre of snow on top of whatever's there likely create ludicrously bad avalanche conditions?
It seems to be pretty bad already.

bobmcstuff, if it all fell in 24 hours then yes, nit good, if it fell over a few days could be OK. 1m in a week or so is not extreme. Current avy conditions are ok in the Arlberg ("quite favorable" to quote today's report), reports indicate some buried weak layers on N aspects in shaded areas, but with a good covering there's no reason to get too worried if you know where you're going. Just check the reports before you head out. Main problem now is the temp, the snowpack is getting very wet, if/when it cools it will likely become a stable base. Maybe.

The Galzig webcam suggests a temp of 9C at that location. Surely not??? It is not March. Yet!

tsk. Common sense will be ignored.
|

sah, thanks for that. I've read so much about avalanche deaths in the Alps this season, I assumed, obviously mistakenly, that St Anton would have high avalanche risk.
My off piste will be limited to piste-side stuff anyway given the group I'm going with. Assuming cover is good enough; Stanton says it's thin at the moment so unless cover is better by then I'll probably be too scared of hitting a barely submerged rock...

ulmerhutte,
It is warm today, but its been warm for 6 weeks , haha!
Folks. Just be glad your skiing Arlberg or Silvretta because in the East Tirol there is nothing but white lines down greens hills
There was another Avalanche fatality yesterday "Not Here" but over in the High Stubai Valley.
