Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

If the weather is behaving nicely at CairnGorm and Glenshee over the next few days the Lecht could be a relative haven of calm, so well worth considering as all uplift is planned for the weekend giving something for everyone. More snow showers expected this evening too.

^Top of the Buzzard, unpisted on Friday - probably will be pisted between the fences for the weekend. Some off-piste lines further out to skiers right of the poma being done too.

^Boarder's don't always sit about on their backsides.. here's one heading off down the Eagle in another snow shower.

^Nursery slopes from above, fantastic place for starting out, esp for kids with the Magic Carpet and handle tows. Cafe is right there overlooking the nursery slopes too.

CairnGorm Mountain on Saturday, where the weather wasn't as bright as expected, nor were the queues as bad as one might have feared with the start of half term! Though the Cas Tow was off after suffering damage to the haul rope in the morning and someone managed to get a t-bar over the downline of the Carpark Tow 2 towers from the bottom - damaging the tower's sheave assembly!! So please be nice to the lifts... our fun depends on them and by start of play tomorrow some of the lift maintenance staff will have worked over 24hours straight, as a result of fixing the damage done on Saturday all through the night!! Shocked

^Hitting a box in the newly set up Sheiling mini park on the lower mountain. Served directly by the Sheiling Trainer Tow.

^Bottom leg of the Zig Zags, they are in fantastic shape and there is 1750ft vertical on offer entirely on green trails for early intermediates from the top of the Ptarmigan Tow to the base of the Carpark Ski Tow.

^Home Road in good shape, saw surprisingly little action Sat. Used it along with Daylodge and West Wall Pomas to ski the White Lady in the afternoon.

Upper runs Main Basin is in the best condition. Wind and skier packed snow over hard base. Happy Valley is gripy or windblown powder but theres all the option to take an ice cookie line in the mid third above the narrows. Exit to Etive Glades gives you grippy to icey with windpack lower down. Kind of dont bother unless you want to get in the mood for Spring Run. Wall windpacked over hard base or gripy ice upper getting softer and lighter lower down - never seemed to see the traffice the conditions deserved. Queues for the cliff hanger and plateau poma most of the day, small infrequent queues for Wall T-bar and Main Basin. Good snow on Plateau and mugs alley(s). Best run for me was main basin exit to cross tow line and drop to start of bunny run and down or to round mugs alley. It got more overcast during the day - cloud did come and go quickly.

We're hoping to get up your way this weekend - conditions look just amazing. Am I right in thinking that you mentioned sometime previously that this season is your ski Scotland debut? If so, you're being completely spoiled! (WARNING: Heather hopping after a sudden thaw may come as a blow Wink !!)

Fingers crossed that you (and we) will be skiing into May or June eh?

mountainaddict, it's the first season I've put in serious time up here. Prior to this season done 1 day at Glencoe, 2 days at Nevis and a handfull at Cairngorm. Went to the latter a couple of times in the 70s then not again to ski until early 00s. Maybe six days in last decade. I spend the bulk of my time in the Pennines - so there are only two types of condition: with or without grass. Teaches you good combat skiing technique.

The aim is to get good enough to tour or go into the back corries by the end of the season. Might need quite a bit more powder time first.

Since buying touring kit 3 years' ago we've done about 7 or 8 days self-guided touring at Cairngorm - all fairly gentle stuff in terms of avalanche risk but amazing in terms of views and the away from it all experience. Also, it's mainly been in the spring, with a settled snow pack. We've yet to have any powder, though we've had a lot of lovely spring snow. We had an amazing bluebird day (24C at Loch Morlich!) on 28th May last year!

Have you got touring kit? If not, you can hire at Mountain Spirit and (I think) Braemar Mountain Sports - both in Aviemore. We were in the town 10 days ago and Braemar Mountain Sports have some decent reductions on lightweight touring skis at the moment. Also, I understand that both shops occasionally sell their ex-rental touring kit from time to time.

If any interest in a touring trip out, we can give you a shout when we tour in the spring?

In terms of the Back Corries, we've been in on 2 days (with a few runs each time): First time it was all skied into a piste-like state; Second time was as soon as it opened on an April powder day. Amazing! And Braveheart Chair was open too. Easiest access is more or less straight on from the top of Warrens T bar. Further up to the right can be a little more dicey...

Todays pictures from Glenshee - cairnwell side only although I did get out to Glas Moal later on. First trip down the tiger was a bit of a mince fest decided against round two just yet. Snow was groomed nicely on all the usual groomed runs. Only areas I found icey base on were the Tiger, Glas Moal traverse and the blue off the back of Caenlochan Poma into Corrie Fionn. Light was a bit flat at times but did brighten up now and then. Caenlochan Poma red (Perth Hut / non t-bar side) was best of the runs for me. No queues once you past the sunny side, just lap it up. Home run, Corrie Fionn Red and over Cairnwell side the Race track were all good. Latter deserved to see more traffic. Blues and greens all busy but lift queues were never out of hand, a reasonable amount of time they just werent there.

Once again the mist that came and went on the upper mountain and the higher level overcast layer melted away with the fading daylight at dusk to give a fantastic evening on the top of CairnGorm Mountain on Friday - this should be repeated at least one day next week and possibly more if the settled high pressure dominated forecast holds.

Heading up to Glenshee tomorrow. Looking forward to giving my son his first taste of scottish skiing. We're nearer Glencoe, but the Cliffhanger puts me off that as he is only 5. If I remember correctly, there is a tbar that takes u up as well, but I remember it being a bit steep just before you dismount? Just thinking it would be his first time on a t bar so that could be a problem as well. It's been a good few years since I've been though so can't be definite. Can anyone enlighten me on whether there is suitable lifts for him? He.s done plenty pomas
snow conditions
 Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person
Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person
The Wall T-bar isn't really one for first time on T-bar trips, most of the line is fairly steep. In terms of Pomas are the one's he's used before of the slower fixed variety such as found in snow domes etc? The fast auto-stacking Pomas can be a bit of a shock to the system for people who've only used the slow fixed ones - due to the fairly agressive take off. Glenshee though has the Sunnyside and Baddoch Chairs which are double to fall back on and there's actually quite a fun wee run down Tiger Gully that meanders its way from the bottom of Claybokie back to the base of the Baddoch Chair at present.

Probably bit more driving, but for introducing people (of any age) to Scottish Snow when your unsure about how they'll get on with the surface lifts, CairnGorm is the best option in that if you have problems with the tows you can fall back on the Funicular and still access the whole Cas side of the mountain.

Winterhighland, Thats what I thought re Glencoe and that tbar, but its been a few years since I last went. He's used the xscape one which does have a bit of a pull in the middle which he used to struggle on, but once he understood the feel of it, he got it. He also uses the ones at the dry slope and has used a few abroad but mainly chairs. He might actually quite like the ones that give him a bit of a jump at the start, as long as he manages to stay on. Laughing

I think we'll give Glenshee a try.

Stupidly unbusy on Aonach Mor again and the snow was super-lush front and back of the mountain. 15,000 ft vertical skied and barely touched a piste all day. The sunshine in Coire Dubh was magic. Red faces everywhere.

Glencoe again for me, did waver first thing - looked clearer at Nevis. I've done a longer (waffly) report on winter highland - short version - mist down until midday. Lifted across the mountain in stages - you could cloud dodge Happy Valley / Etive Glades / Wall or ski in mist down the basin early afternoon then it was good viz until the end. Spring snow and best run for was aptly the spring run.

Nice day on Glencoe today. Sunny, no wind, a bit icy (not too bad though) in the morning which turned to granulated snow in most places by lunchtime.

Best skiing was the beginners area, I carved some great turns on the run that went to the right of the plateau poma. Nice snow there! (see picture in next post for where I mean: "Wide and low road"?)
