shoogly, It's the Twins gully, what you can't see is that at the back of it are a nice set of 100m grade II/III ice climbs. I'd be very impressed to see someone ski down them.

barry, Gnarly. I suppose it is true that the vertical ice isn't that high and I reckon the 120m quoted in the climbing guide starts at the foot of the gully and includes the snow slope at the top too. So, maybe 100m of snow and 20m of never vertical ice. Go for it shoogly,

very sad, a video from Cairngorm mountain staff this morning of their drive up the hill road shows how wild its been overnight. More of this story to come i imagine as the location of the airlift is a long way from where the dead walker was found (Jacob's Ladder in Coire an tSneachda, which is adjacent coire to main ski area)

mountainaddict, it's the first season I've put in serious time up here. Prior to this season done 1 day at Glencoe, 2 days at Nevis and a handfull at Cairngorm. Went to the latter a couple of times in the 70s then not again to ski until early 00s. Maybe six days in last decade. I spend the bulk of my time in the Pennines - so there are only two types of condition: with or without grass. Teaches you good combat skiing technique.
The aim is to get good enough to tour or go into the back corries by the end of the season. Might need quite a bit more powder time first.

Legs were a bit spent at the end of the day so I went for the chair but did think it was looking very Pennine at the bottom. Came here to ski other types of snow Looked like there'd been some extreme combat boarding straight down the chair line!

Since buying touring kit 3 years' ago we've done about 7 or 8 days self-guided touring at Cairngorm - all fairly gentle stuff in terms of avalanche risk but amazing in terms of views and the away from it all experience. Also, it's mainly been in the spring, with a settled snow pack. We've yet to have any powder, though we've had a lot of lovely spring snow. We had an amazing bluebird day (24C at Loch Morlich!) on 28th May last year!
Have you got touring kit? If not, you can hire at Mountain Spirit and (I think) Braemar Mountain Sports - both in Aviemore. We were in the town 10 days ago and Braemar Mountain Sports have some decent reductions on lightweight touring skis at the moment. Also, I understand that both shops occasionally sell their ex-rental touring kit from time to time.
If any interest in a touring trip out, we can give you a shout when we tour in the spring?
In terms of the Back Corries, we've been in on 2 days (with a few runs each time): First time it was all skied into a piste-like state; Second time was as soon as it opened on an April powder day. Amazing! And Braveheart Chair was open too. Easiest access is more or less straight on from the top of Warrens T bar. Further up to the right can be a little more dicey...

Todays pictures from Glenshee - cairnwell side only although I did get out to Glas Moal later on. First trip down the tiger was a bit of a mince fest decided against round two just yet. Snow was groomed nicely on all the usual groomed runs. Only areas I found icey base on were the Tiger, Glas Moal traverse and the blue off the back of Caenlochan Poma into Corrie Fionn. Light was a bit flat at times but did brighten up now and then. Caenlochan Poma red (Perth Hut / non t-bar side) was best of the runs for me. No queues once you past the sunny side, just lap it up. Home run, Corrie Fionn Red and over Cairnwell side the Race track were all good. Latter deserved to see more traffic. Blues and greens all busy but lift queues were never out of hand, a reasonable amount of time they just werent there.

16 photos by oldagepredator from Glenshee on Thursday now up on Winterhighland. 21 lifts scheduled for Friday, looks like being a great day to get up somewhere. Remember CairnGorm Mountain is open till 8.30pm Friday.
^Piste Basher working at digging out the Meall Odhar Poma gives an idea of the extent of the drifting in yesterday's storm at Glenshee.

Today it was sunny, cover was wide and snow generally good in a smooth to crunchy way on the upper mountain. Bit heavier lower down. Wide cover on plateau runs.

Heading up to Glenshee tomorrow. Looking forward to giving my son his first taste of scottish skiing. We're nearer Glencoe, but the Cliffhanger puts me off that as he is only 5. If I remember correctly, there is a tbar that takes u up as well, but I remember it being a bit steep just before you dismount? Just thinking it would be his first time on a t bar so that could be a problem as well. It's been a good few years since I've been though so can't be definite. Can anyone enlighten me on whether there is suitable lifts for him? He.s done plenty pomas

The Wall T-bar isn't really one for first time on T-bar trips, most of the line is fairly steep. In terms of Pomas are the one's he's used before of the slower fixed variety such as found in snow domes etc? The fast auto-stacking Pomas can be a bit of a shock to the system for people who've only used the slow fixed ones - due to the fairly agressive take off. Glenshee though has the Sunnyside and Baddoch Chairs which are double to fall back on and there's actually quite a fun wee run down Tiger Gully that meanders its way from the bottom of Claybokie back to the base of the Baddoch Chair at present.
Probably bit more driving, but for introducing people (of any age) to Scottish Snow when your unsure about how they'll get on with the surface lifts, CairnGorm is the best option in that if you have problems with the tows you can fall back on the Funicular and still access the whole Cas side of the mountain.

Winterhighland, Thats what I thought re Glencoe and that tbar, but its been a few years since I last went. He's used the xscape one which does have a bit of a pull in the middle which he used to struggle on, but once he understood the feel of it, he got it. He also uses the ones at the dry slope and has used a few abroad but mainly chairs. He might actually quite like the ones that give him a bit of a jump at the start, as long as he manages to stay on.
I think we'll give Glenshee a try.
