I'll try with some pics if anyone can give me a quick steer on what the easiest way to upload them is. Still snowing, at least a couple of inches on the balcony outside. Too excited to sleep!! |

It is my understanding that with SH, you have to upload the pictures elsewhere and then link back to them in your post with the Img button.
Hutchy, seems to suggests a hosting site

Thanks for the advice. I'll try to sort some pics out for your delectation. Mixed sort of day today. Last night's snow amounted to about 3inches, so it definitely freshened up what was already open, but doesn't seem to have been enough to allow anything new to open. But at least it looks like winter now! It has snowed on and off today and is snowing now, with more forecast for overnight, so we'll see what tomorrow brings. All of the snow I skied on was nice quality today, but unfortunately the glacier cable car was shut due to the wind (and also perhaps yesterday's adventure- more of which shortly), so that everybody (it felt like the whole world at times!) was skiing on double M. It was ok in the morning, but exceptionally busy after lunch. Hopefully tomorrow will be a lot quieter, since I think there were a lot of day trippers today; there were at least 20 coaches in the car park below the funicular.
Re yesterday's cable car rescue, I spoke with a woman in our hotel who was on it. They had to wait a couple of hours to get lowered down by rope, but she was very complementary about the professionalism and kindness of the pisteurs. Good to know if you're ever in that situation. She also got a free cup of tea!!! (and a complementary day pass). There were 40 people on her car, and 5 on the one coming down. She was looking on it as quite an interesting experience and didn't seem phased in the least, although she did say the moment when she dropped through the hatch door was scary.
Hopefully tomorrow will bring more snow, tbh it's needed to get some more of the area open.
That's all for now folks!

Trying without spaces:
Got the hang of it I think, thanks for the help. The picture doesn't actually do justice to how busy it was!

I've only been to Tignes once before, but it was Feb half term and wasn't close to this busy even then!
evski, thanks for the pics, they're much appreciated. I'm heading to Val d'isere on Boxing day and was starting to get very stressed ( I organised the trip!), feeling a little better about it now but still a little tentative.

You know it makes sense.

It's double M, normally a pleasant, albeit popular, red that runs from the base of the glacier down to val claret. I've never seen it this busy in 3 visits to Tignes. The problem today was that it was pretty much the only run open, with the upper part of the glacier being shut because the cable car was off. So just an unfortunate combination of events really. Thanks for the nice comments on the photo- just snapped with my iPhone.

Its just nice to see a white landscape!
how do snow-forecast.com compare to weather conditions in resort. What I mean by that is has it been snowing more than they forecast?
Keep the updates coming.

Yes, definitely last night there was more snow in resort than snowforcast predicted. From memory they had 2cm, and I'd say there was 5-7cm in reality. I guess it's really difficult to predict the actual amount that will fall.
I'll take more pics and post again tomorrow, off for tea and cake Mark Warner style now!

...... And here's the shot from my balcony. I know size isn't everything and all that, but in this context more than 6inches is definitely good!

Brilliant!
Just got a text from CSki who is in Tignes doing some race training: "foot of fresh at the bottom today, and the coach has turned up with a pair of fat skis".

Is it true that they've turned off that cable car, while they investigate the fault?
That's kind of a disaster for Tignes at this time of year isn't it? Little or no access to the glacier?

paulio, I'd be surprised if it was running it after a major evacuation from it a couple of days ago. Surely they'd need some sort of investigation. You can still access most of the glacier by T-Bar, except for the very top section.

paulio, a few years ago I saw the Grand Motte cable car operators using their high tech ice removal equipment to remove the build up of ice and snow on the cables. One of the men climbed up to the top of the cable supports on the bottom station and then stood as close the upper station as possible. From there he deployed the ice removal equipment. He swung a sledge hammer and hit the cable!
In the UK I have seen ice that has fallen into snow from the high voltage wires between electricity pylons. The ice was up to 3cm thick and had pieces over 1m long. If it fell on you you would not be pleased. Skiing into on falling onto a similar piece of ice from the Grande Motte cables could be bad news.

Will this most recent snow fall open substantially more pistes? Also how long will it take for the bashers to get them into a reasonable state?

They blew a lot of snow last week so that they could make a path back to the lift, the piste looked a similar depth to Double M.
