Well, I was happy to see the forecasters proved wrong today - 10cm overnight in the Saalbach valley, and it kept coming all day. First run was in 20cm of light fluffy powder over the hard icy pistes of yesterday, with some areas which the piste bashers hadn't touched having knee deep powder. One kid of about 14 found a nice stash off to the side where windblown snow had filled in a gully, and disappeared up to his neck...
By the end of the day, we'd had about 40cm since yesterday in the valley, and maybe more like 60cm on the hill. That made for some interesting conditions as the day warmed up and the snow turned heavy, with great mounds of snow over the pistes where it had been scraped through to the ice in some places, and the scrapings deposited in hillocks to trap the unwary.
-15C and 40+kph winds on the tops, with poor visibility for most of the day. At times it was easier to ski off the side of the pistes, and at other times the quieter runs were more like off-piste, with what looked like an untouched snow field with gentle undulations. Only the piste markers gave it away.

Fantastic. If you can update during the week that would be really appreciated. The off piste should be really shaping up well. We arrive in Soll Saturday, so the new snow couldn't have been timed any better.

Is it still snowing a lot? Forecasts are variable, but the gist seems to be around 8cms expected today..then getting more sunny by the weekend.
Oh my, those conditions are going to be good.

Got some good powder around Schladming yesterday, was snowing all day quite steadily. Though had a frantic drive back to Munich airport after a hard days powder skiing. Major jam on autobahn somewhere before chiemsee, stationary inside lane full of lorries for miles and then eventually outside lane as well. Pulled off onto back roads and satnav was estimating I'd get to airport 30 mins before flight took off. Got back on A8 and was hardly any traffic, all stuck further back, but it was snowing hard and in places road surface completely covered, so putting my foot down wasn't a real option. In the end dropped hire car off with half empty tank and ran through airport and got to boarding gate just in nick of time. Total drive time from altenmarkt was 4.5hours. Was worth it had a fab pow day playing in various woods and meadows. Looks like a cracking week ahead. My next skiing fix will be eurosport watching schladming night race, tonight.

Tuesday in Saalbach was incredible, it just kept coming, and on the first lift up we had about 20cm of powder over everything except for the off-piste which could be identified by the 50cm wall of snow left from where the piste bashers had stopped. Any attempt to enter this resulted in snow over the knees, and much giggling.
Then overnight it dumped 30cm more down, so today we had the same start to the day, but the off-piste was just unbelievable. I had it to mid-thigh level, and in some places waist deep. Today we also ran down one of the few black runs here about 09:30, and it is the first time I've ever experienced 30cm of undisturbed powder on a 35 degree groomed slope
Today has also featured that much treasured sight - small groups of people prodding poles into waist deep snow to try to find the missing skis. It may not be fun for them, but it provides entertainment in a way (is schadenfreude an Austrian or German concept?), and shows the riches to be found.

Amazing stuff! So how much do you think there has been in total? I've lost count of all the snow depths!!
|
Picadilly, according to the Salzburg avalanche report this morning there has been up to 70cm of snowfall since it started snowing on Monday (that's the maximum to be fair, but 10 to 50cm in other places).
In parts of Steirmark 40-70cm since the snow began.
In Tirol they are reporting up 35cm in the east since yesterday (though 5 to 10cm more generally).
In Vorarlberg 15 to 20cm overnight.
