Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Serre Chevalier Snow Report 2009-2010

Yesterday was the last day of skiing.... Sad Sad Sad Sad

But we still found powder......after 5 days of the big storm, really nice. This time need a little effort, between 5 to 30 min hiking, but new lines in deep powder worth it...

I don't know if conditions like this are common, surely not, but I could title the whole week as: "The perfect Storm" Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy And the area of Serre Chevalier amazing, lots of opportunities, lots of different types of descents...

i hope they're common, and happen again soon - i'm there from sunday (due a little freshen up according to the wigglies). are most of these lines relatively easy to scope out from the lifts?

Yes, I think all of this you can see from lifts. Maybe the Grand Pre area are a bit tricky and need some terrain knowledge and some navigation skills, because there are lots of variants and routes, some of then ending in a narrow gullies or steep tree slopes. Also the couloirs in the Cucumelle side of La Balme ridge are a little hidden because in there aren't any lifts in the vallon, but you can take the red piste and take a look from there.

ooooh the excitement is building. two sleeps left (have to leave here on saturday to catch early flight sunday).

snowangel., do you have a local forecast site (or local forcast) at all? i've had a look at snow-guess and netweather.tv and they seem to be suggesting freezing levels about 1500 - 1800m on saturday and tuesday. my reading of the wigglies would have it a bit lower - closer to 1200m or so.

Just a bit of an information update (code for how to make the folks at home wish they were here.....)

Great weather round Serre Che and nearby resorts the last few days. We've had one day in Serre Che, one in Vars/Risoul and today in Montgenevre. Snow conditions great, pistes excellent; off-pistes getting a bit cruddy.

In Serre Che the Eychauda drag lift was open and the Ailefroide run beside it (near Clot Gauthier lift). Don't see that open too often.

Vars/Risoul is about 50km south of Briancon. Worth a visit. Vars is where they have the speed skiing competition....more like a free fall than a ski run. There is a competition there this weekend I think. The area is a bit behind others in terms of speedy lifts and linking things up but hey it's good skiing. Good snow park for the young and/or brave.

Montgenevre is always worth a visit especially for anyone who has bought a six day pass for Serre Che...includes one free day at Montgenevre.

Monetier les Bains tomorrow....

sunday 24th, Fab day on piste today..... hang on a minuet i hear you say dont you work every weekend? Yes i do and today i was paid to go snowboarding! (god i love my job!)
I spent the afternoon visiting the Neige de Culture on piste. while i find the trail of vauban (in briancon) and Cesar (in monetier which we didn't visit) really a big waste of money. I thought the little mongol village great, interesting, a nice place to warm up for 5 mins while speaking to the guy there who tells a great story!. I also think the new orientation tables fab. you really can find easily what your looking at.
Took a couple of pics, will post them later.
pistes still really in great condition. found a few icy ones but really fab conditions here.

Yeah I read it cost €1.5M, personally I would like to see my financial contribution to the ski area going towards sorting out the lifts in the secteur du Frejus without putting a chairlift up the Cucumelle Valley. What appears from 800 miles away is to be a few flamboyant tourist boards, then the amount of money spent sounds like a joke.

Christopher, i agree totally so do half if not all of the girls i work with! But hey ho! If all the tourists that visit say that in the questionair that they do maybe they'll not continue with this rubbish as i believe there is more to come next year.

today wasn't so nice up there, light dropped in the afternoon and it was rock solid, very icy in monetier and villeneuve better in chantemerle and briancon, Still i'm glad i went up.

After having watched the webcams for the past 4 years in the area. I reckon this year has the most number of overcast days in the season so far. I know its only Janaury and its typical for this time of year, but I reckon it has had a fair chunk into its 65 days of overcast weather as they claim to have approximately 300 days of sunshine a year.

snowangel., Does some nostalgic romantic run the ski area? If my memorey serves me correctly Briancon is in no small matter of debt due to extravagent spending on heated pavements, lift investments etc in the 1980's. You would have thought they would have longer memories and have learnt their lessons. I thought after having been brought by the CDA they would have prioritised the lift system as it still a fair criticism of the area and €1.5m is a huge proportion of the price of a chairlift. I'm sure many locals would laugh at an English teenager with such views who only visits a couple of weeks a year, but it seem a joke as I don't really see the benefit of a few signposts to raise awareness of the culture and history. You wouldn't think we were in a reccession.

Doesn't seem long to go now on a positive note! snowHead

Christopher, until recently Briancon was run entirely separately to the rest of the area. There was a report on Hors Piste that it was in danger of closing completely. I entirely agree that the lift system should be a priority, but it does keep those slopes quiet in Monetier wink

Got back from Serre Che on Sunday. We had a great week considering it only snowed on the Saturday/Sunday of the transfer. `We were still finding fresh lines and tree runs on day six with a bit of hiking/scoping. Really quiet resort, great trees and even our budget apartment was a pleasant surprise (Residence Maeva). Not the most thrilling nightlife though Laughing .

snowangel., dropped by the ticket office to say hi, but missed you both times. I left a quick note with one of the girls who was there though. Maybe next time, the rest of the group thought the resort waranted a second visit so maybe next year wink .

Christopher, most locals would agree with you.

Helen Beaumont, with any luck they'll stop monetier having a 6 day pass from next year too, about time really, its a bit rediculas if you ask me! Its definaltey something they're trying to do, have been for the last 3 years, maybe next year

Arrived here on Saturday after a week in Isola 2000 (reported on in another thread) and skied yesterday and today in brilliant sunshine and the most intense cold I've experienced in many a long year. -16 plus considerable windchill. We had to come in yesterday after the first hour to put on another layer. It's the first time in several seasons I have had to put on a balaclava under my helmet. Great skiing higher up but the runs down to the valley floor are quite scraped and hard.

We are staying in the heart of the old part of Chantemerle in what was a chance find on the internet - a gîte called Le Passe-Montagne. A double room with ensuite shower and WC and breakfast for €42 pp a night. (We have paid much more for a so-called double room in Val d'Isère with about 30cm space around the sides and end of the bed.) Dinner is an optional extra at €12 for a simple, well-cooked and substantial 3 course meal with plenty of wine. The owners are great - friendly, helpful and organised. To be recommended with the caveat that so far the other guests are all French so it definitely helps to speak some French.

By the way, I went to Sport 2000 tonight to get my skis waxed but baulked at €10 for the privilege and am now getting them done in Intersport (bottom floor of the shopping centre) for €5 plus another €5 to repair a nasty 3cm gouge along an edge.

We have battered some blacks, roamed many reds and cruised some blues. This is just a three day taster but overall impression is very good: I reckon we will be back. Just a pity about the lack of off-piste wink wink

I expect it has, Helen - the current owners are called Cédric and Isabelle and I don't think they have been here that long. A lovely couple and excellent hosts.

Today was less appallingly cold - almost tropical indeed at about -12. The skiing on the upper runs was generally good again but overall there is a need for fresh snow to deal with the scraped, hard bits that are increasingly apparent and the odd stones beginning to come through. Off-piste is widely tracked out but can offer some good bumpy pitches and variable snow conditions to tackle. The tracked areas included, to my irritation, a section of woodland clearly roped off and sign-posted as a no-go area in order to protect young trees. What is it about some people that they are arrogant enough to think they are too important to pay attention to such restrictions? You just have to look at a poor wee shredded baby conifer that has been stripped by one ski or board edge to realise why that area was cordoned off. And it's not as if there aren't a good few square kilometres to play in!

Anyway I guess if we're spared, we'll be back. It's a great skiing area.
