jazzy, You should have a great time. It's been quite mixed but the good has outweighed the not so good by a considerable margin.

Absolutely dead on the hill today, but good snow to be skied - powder on the pistes this afternoon, and lots of fun under Laisinant and in the Fornet forest - soft & powdery on a variable base... Should be great when it clears!

Hi All, I'll be a first-timer at Tignes when I arrive at the end of Jan, and having read this whole thread I must say I'm pretty excited! I can see from the piste map that the area is huge but it's good to hear the day to day experiences to put it into perspective.
I've been checking the webcams religiously and although you've had a fantastic few days recently it seems that it was bad weather or flat light for weeks on end up until a little while ago. I'm only there for a week, but want to be out there sliding around the whole time so I'm hoping for some tips on the best pistes / areas for flat light? (just incase its not bluebird everyday!)
I know there aren't many trees in the area, but from the map it looks like Brevieres or Fornet are the spots? I'm an 'improver' and would be better on blue or maybe red runs. Any advice appreciated!

Don't forget that you can try & get above the cloud, often into blue sky conditions.

haken,
Over christmas the light was good in the mornings and the cloud would come over in the afternoon.
Trees in Fornet, Brevieres and down to La Daille.
Other than Kenzies sugestion, you can always use the force

Thanks in advance!

hakenvisual, if it's horrible weather then La Daile is my favorate - tree lined runs but you also get to warm up in the funiocular

dave_wick, The lake behind the dam was last emptied in the spring of 2000 (http://www.tignesnet.com/about-the-area/tignes-from-past-to-present.htm), and as the work is undertaken every 10 years it shouldn't be long to wait

Sunday 17
Back in Val d'Isere and staying with Finlays. Travelled yesterday and skied today. Happy to say that we had an almost uneventful journey from Gatwick via Geneva. Soon after sitting down on the Thompson aircraft the pilot informed us that there would be a delay. One of the passengers had argued with security staff and refused to let his bag be searched. They in return refued to let him fly. So they also had to find and remove his bag from the hold. Luckily this was quick and we only had a 30 min delay. The flight was good and the cabin crew were cheerful. The transfer was quicker now the new motorway from Switzerland to Annecy can be used. Today there was 20cm of new snow in the car park and much more in places higher up. The pistes are in very good condition and many have fresh snow on top. We skied a lot of powder on piste plus bits close to the piste, mostly around Belvarde but also down Genepy from the Tignes funicular. Lots of new snow everwhere but today it was a bit damp and sticky. Poor visibility this morning in the falling snow, the sun came out for the afternoon.
Val d'Isere is hosting a polo competition, I watched a little of it today when the final was held. Quite fun, no idea what makes good polo play but the commentators said it was a good close competition. Several of the local bars had stalls around the playing field (actually the roof of the new sports centre) and were giving away food and van chaud.

Many thanks for the tips re bad weather / flat light conditions - will bear them all in mind for when we get over there. Does anyone know what the rules are re wearing helmets in the fun parks? I don't have one but am keen to 'charge' some of the green jumps!

just been out on a perfect bluebird day. we had about 8 inches of fresh snow fall yesterday, but a lot of the lift accessible off-piste areas are pretty tracked out today. can't wait to see what tomorrow brings !

Wonderful sunny day. Skied Tour de Charvet and saw two chamois. Then did the sunny bowl between top of Signal and base of Col, twice because the snow was so nice. Then out into Pays Desert. Lots of fresh powder today, but could occasionally feel the old crusty snow beneath and found a couple of places with thick snow that stopped the skis throwing the body forward. The pistes we used were all in top condition. Some of the "obvious" off piste areas, such as the area to either side of the Manchet Express, look well tracked but still have soft snow.

Sunny morning. Pistes in good condition although getting quite hard packed in places. Did the Lavachet wall and had part of it avalanche right beside us! Immediately to skiers left of a couloir, the fracture line was about 30 to 50cm deep and 20m wide and the snow slid down into the trees. It broke as the third skier in our group went down, he was just outside the avalanche path, to skiers left. He fell over but did not slide down. I was second down that slope and had just traversed out so I had my back to the avalanche, it was just a few metres behind me. I heard and felt nothing until our guide, who was first down, shouted out a warning to the group. Later we had lovely powder in Cocaine Sud, so we did it again. At the end of the morning the light faded making the traverse into the Familial more challenging than usual, but the 50 powder we had turns made up for it. Cloudy and overcast this afternoon, the forecast snowfall has not started.

Snowed 20cm last night and not much more up high. Sunshine all day. Skied Fornet sector today, old ski tracks still visible in many places under the new snow. Seemed much colder today than previous few days. Had great snow in Pays Desert and Col Pers. Access to Col Pers is a walk with skis on shoulder straight up from the piste, there is no traverse path. There was plenty of snow on the steep section just over the Col, so the entry is easy. We had lovely snow in three or four pitches before climbing out to avoid the Gorges. An ESF guide spoke to our guide on the climb and was complaining that he had found difficult snow conditions! The slopes after the climb were well-tracked but had soft easy skiing. The road from Pont St Charles is fully covered with snow and was fairly easy to walk and pole along. Skied hardly any pistes today, so cannot say much about them.

Adrian, sounds mouthwatering, as I'm due there in a few weeks. But I'm confused by you climbing out to avoid the gorges. I thought that conditions become easier with more snow underfoot - can you explain?

sproggski, the "Gorges des Malpasset" is, as its name says, the gorge (ie deep ravine) of the bad passage. (Perhaps a French speaker can produce a better translation.) It needs lots of avalanches to fill in the gorge to form a continuous snow bridge over the running water. Until then the gorge is considered impassable. So after skiing the big area just after crossing Col Pers, one climbs up and over a wide ridge (I called it a shoulder) to avoid the gorge.
If you search Snowheads or Pistehors you will find the sad details of someone who died, in the last two or three weeks, while attempting the gorge.
"Col Pers" is popular offpiste route, but it provides several opportunities for the unaware and the unskilled skier to kill themselves.

Another lovely sunny day. Skied Cocaine Sud and then the Sachette. The high traverse from above the pisteurs building was quite bumpy, but the climb at the end of the ridge and the traverse across the couloir were OK. And the untracked powder was great. Walked across the flat bottom area to access the slopes to skiers left of the valley and had more great powder. Saw about seven chamois high in the rocks, then two more that were close enough to see their colouring and their limbs. The path out that joins the Sache piste near the tree line was quite undulating but had almost complete snow cover. Across the piste and onto a racing side-slip to the pistes and the Boisses chair, this was quite fun as the snow was fairly soft. The pistes from there back to La Dialle were excellent, although a little hard packed in places.
sproggski, Cocaine Sud is the slopes above the top of the Sache bubble lift. Cocaine Nord is the other side of that mountain, ie the slopes down to the Sache piste.
