Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

TIGNES snow report winter 2007/8

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Just back today from Tignes. Very windy and bad visibility for the last few days but previous to that brilliant weather. Expected huge queues and although most accommodatin seemed booked only bad queues at the bottom of the Fresse lift. Bit icy down to Les Brevieres but generally good on piste skiing.

Glorious powder day today, amazing skiing. Found some fantastic lines.

Had a bit of an adventure as we went tree skiing under the Sache gondala and ended up on a 50 degree slope. Ended up having to take our skis off to slide down an ice wall! Funfun. Very Happy

Merles black/skiroute exceptionally good.

Bring on tomorrow.

Oh, and it's still snowing. Ilovelife. Very Happy

It's been snowing since Saturday, putting down a couple of feet (so Morgan & the guys in the Loop tell me, and they should know - they have to shovel it off their sunterrace). Went down to Brev this morning due to the poor visibility. Better amoungst the trees, but the snow was sticky. Hopefully it is due to clear up a bit latter in the week, so time to dig out the off-piste kit!
Anyone who is coming out & wants to meet up, give me a PM & I'll give you my mobile no. snowHead

Snow as well, rain at about 1100 metres. Snow was pretty wet/slushy when falling but was definitely snow.

Oh my God what an amazing day, easily the best of the season. Powder everywhere, did most of the smaller itineraries. Amazing conditions, not a cloud in the sky. Perfect pistes.

And to top it all off I skied the Lavachet wall at the end of the day, I'm so chuffed. Very Happy

Lavachet wall is (unsurprisingly) the face of the mountain next to Le Lavachet.

It's the face to the left of the avalanche barriers.

The Tignes Wall is (was) off of the Grand Motte. It was a beautiful slope, smooth snow, tipping away down and out of sight, you were never sure how steep until completely committed. To get there one could ski down Face or Descent from the top of the Funicular. Then turn left a little before the pistes go through the rocks at the base of Double Plan. The slope can be seen from the Les Lanches chair as the end of the glacier. Sadly it is mostly rocks now that the glacier has shrunk.

Lavachet wall is very avalanche prone. Seen so many slides over the years and also remember when I did my first season there the ESF set it off on purpose and skied it. Think it was for a video.

The other Wall is a real shame. I'll dig out some picks from 92/93 season and it was 100% smooth with no rocks. Even in summer. Now its a tight entry although haven't been back since 2004 so not sure what its like this season? Can you still get a good run down that?

Alex

My dad was telling me about the Wall off the Grand Motte, he pointed to where the glacier used to reach down too. It's really surprising how far it's receded. Sad

Yeah Tim will be the car pushing "slag" if required Toofy Grin

Yeah that forecast looks nice. My wish would be (realistic not fantasy) for a nice big dump this weekend / early next week, then it goes stable as it always does and then we arrive to powder city...I dont care if there is a white out...I need powder after Chamonix last year (Blue Skys bit nice) and VT (Blue Sky and crap) the year before that i'm suffering withdrawl symptons BIG TIME Sad Year before that in Jackson Hole I was spoilt and every year / season before that I have been lucky !

I have a feeling about this trip though...Tignes is going to deliver the goods Smile
