Anyone got an opinion on what is the best (read: cheapest) ski hire option available at Nevis?
Ellis Brigham in Fort William, or something at the base of the gondola?

Coo, that's good. Shame the train's not that cheap this weekend or I could do it, starting from Crewe.

paulio, Oh. No not trying to put you off just thought flying would be better. I booked my flight last week so I don't know what the short notice cost of flights are now.

One of the best places for detailed information on Scottish mountain weather is the Mountain Weather Information Service (MWIS) who publish detailed daily weather information.
Click here to view the latest report (PDF) for the West Highlands, including the Nevis Range area.
From what I can see there although the freezing level shot up this morning and there's rain even on the highest tops it's set to shoot down again later (and stay down) giving snow down to 550m - "Freezing level: 1300m, lowering progressively toward 550m from
north from late morning onwards."
The outlook for the weekend:
"A bitterly cold Easter Weekend on all mountains, with persistent, at times strong northerly winds bringing sub-freezing temperatures to even fairly low hills. Snow showers will continue, mainly on hills open to the sea to the north, but there remains the risk of one or two troughs bringing temporarily widespread snow on Sunday or possibly Monday."
If going up take lots of warm gear, wind chill is apparently going to severe:
Friday - "At 900m: –5C but will feel as cold as minus 22C directly in wind. Freezing level: 300m."
Saturday - "At 900m: –6C but will feel as cold as minus 19C directly in wind. Freezing level: 250m."
Maybe see you up there

Hooray! I'm not scared of a bit of cold. Had -30 with wind chill in Verbier last year and that was fine.
I say fine - actually my face went numb and stayed numb for several days.

paulio, if you have a face mask or a balaclava it'll be well worth taking it.
Funnily enough I got one last month for similar conditions in Mammoth lol.

Deliaskis, no - no-one wants to come, miserable s*ds. I really don't fancy doing the drive on my own, and flights were too expensive, so not looking overly hopeful at the moment...

Boozing away in a pub in Ft. William right now. Weather not great - extremely windy. More of the same forecast tomorrow, most of the area was shut all day today - only 4 lifts open in the beginners' area at the bottom when we scoped out the lift station. Ah well, have already:
1) Seen a man playing bagpipes
2) Had black pud
3) Had haggis
4) Heard someone say 'och'
5) Seen a stag
Still to come: drinking Tennants and a local malt, and we'll have the full set of Jock stereotypes.

One photo from today. The Ben appears from the summit tow. I've never seen as much snow on the summit uptrack you can almost grab the tow rope way way above the top of the fence in places.

While the base isn't as extensive as at Nevis and Glencoe, CairnGorm has notched up around a foot of fresh powdery snow since Saturday evening. Ploughs have now got ahead of the drifting on the Access Road and it's almost time to play!

Cairngorm had foul overhead conditions on Monday, but some big drifts of powder everywhere. Bit of pisting needing in places, but should be great skiing for those who can get up mid week. Car park was full when I was there, but due to the conditions only the train, Cas and M1 were open, surprisingly no queues on the lifts, perhaps everyone was hiding in the restaurants. Most people were skiing the Cas which was covered in a lot of nice powder - though it was sitting on top of a very icy base, so in the dodgy vis you could get caught out if you hit a scraped area. Almost no one was skiing the m1 or the Lady. the M1 was actually quite a nice ski, the Lady was fine if the cloud was up, but a bit of a pain in the more usual poor vis as then you couldn't see where the big drifts of powder were (or even the run on occasion).

Glad you enjoyed Glencoe, shame to miss it, as this weekend was my first time on the west coast, Nevis was fun and I'll have to see if I can get over later in the year and do Glencoe. It was probably a wise choice though, as it is much colder and snowier here on the east coast and some bits of road back into aberdeenshire were a bit dodgy. I'm looking out onto a snowy scene here in Aberdeen and we've had regular heavy snow showers going through all morning.

Skied at Glencoe today and found the narrowish runs a bit challenging after LDA but nevertheless good to have some Scottish skiing again after 20 or so years absence on my part. Yes, easiski, there are as many loos now at Glencoe as at Les Cretes! I took the compact Rossignols from ca 1979 but thought better of it and hired a pair which seemed half the weight; I used my old poles though for old times sake.

Sounds like the Clash will be good for you though, enjoy it

roga, At least they now have a tow up the 'plateau' and a sensible lift from the car park. I understand they also have loos on the mountain - none of these were present when I went there nmany, many years ago. That's why I stayed away .... Looks like I missed out. |
So they have upgraded it, mind you we could only find the one loo (two cubicles) in the cafe and that was for male and female use so there was a permanent queue - in fact it was the worse queue on the mountain
I have heard some horror stories in the past but never realised it had such great terrain and good snowholding or such a lack of snow fencing - that was the biggest surprise!

glad you all had a good weekend. |
Thanks

I seem to recall more at Les Cretes but the memory cheats sometimes

At Glencoe last week I spotted as I came off the chair from the car park, that there are loos and a small cafe at the top on the right hand side just below the plateau poma. I hadn't spotted this in the past but then I hadn't been for a few years either. It is marked on the map too.

But I doubt the Glencoe loos are guarded by a little old biddy doing her knitting as she collects the admission fee from visitors who have already forked out for a weeks ski pass (the cheek of it).
Ah I nearly forgot - in Scotland we have Health & Safety as well as loos!
I’d love to know how the injury statistics for the Cretes ski run compare with those for the Cretes loo spiral staircase.

metoffice warning for Friday.....
There is a moderate risk of a severe event affecting N.Ireland, western and central parts of Scotland and also northwest England. There is a potential for heavy snow with accumulations of 2 to 5 cms possible, mainly over hills above around 200m, but perhaps to low-levels in southwest Scotland and northwest England. Strong winds are also possible with gusts of 40 to 50 mph giving blizzard conditions at times.
