Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

@Snow Hound, 2 choices for me, Hansi’s if you want independent local and a schnapps as you get sorted! or Check in sport 2000 within the Schattberg gondola station. Book in advance for Check in for better price, I use them when staying down that end of the village v Hansi’s because they have a room downstairs where you can leave the skis and my boots ( despite fact every accommodation I stay in have same ) just found it more convenient than going back to my accommodation.

@Snow Hound, for ski hire look no further than “Hansi’s Best-Price”, which is next door but one to Bobby’s Pub (a couple of hundred yards along the main road from the Schattberg Xpress). It’s Hansi’s own business, he really knows his stuff, speaks fluent English, and renews his equipment every season.
His prices are very competitive, and, being his own boss, he will generally undercut any other quote. Additionally he gives an extra discount to anyone who I recommend to go to him, so say you want the “Tatman discount”.
And, if that weren’t enough, he has a schnapps fountain and bar in his shop and will offer you a welcome drink as soon as you walk in.

@tatmanstours, is it worth booking in advance through Hansi's own site? He offers a 20% discount online for the dates I'm there (14th-21st Jan. Or will walk up do fine?

Nice guy Hansi.

I'd booked 'Silver' skis but he let me have some brand new RC4's for the same price when I admired them.

This was after about 4 of his little schapps's and a good bit of banter

somebody had a code on here for alpinresorts and it gave me an upgraded pair of skis and 3 sets of skis boots and helmets for my adult kids for 400gbp from hervis. Compared to what i was looking at early season it seemed a steal for first week in march.

A ski boots question. ( this and 'recommend me an Apres Bar' should probably be a sticky for all local forums on SH, I reckon.)
My boots are getting softer (not me!) and larger. And yes, I've changed the liner last January and it was ok for a couple of weeks etc. but I do need a stiffer and more responsive pair.
I'm arriving to Saalbach from Vienna airport through Salzburg, any idea where to buy a serious pair at a decent price, and a bootfitter in Saalbach cause it will probably hurt... ?
How is Brundl Sports at McArthur Glen Outlet?

@Gilly28, so am I!

@drporat, the general consensus is that Marcus Hagleitner at Hagleitners Sports Shop (just over the bridge on the right in Schulstrasse) is the man to go to.

@drporat, my wife had boots fitted by Hagleitner and they have been perfect. You can go back as many times as you like but she didn't need any after the initial fitting and moulding. She was so smug that I took my boots in to see if he could fix a tight spot that 2 years of tweaking by EB (different footbeds the works) could not eliminate. After one good rummage around and marking session he kept the boots overnight and now they are just right.

G@tatmanstours, @Col the Yeti, thanks. Good to know, some of the reviews on Google (albeit not specifically related to bootfitting in the main store) were discouraging.
How are his prices, I imagine anything out of the resort will be cheaper (and of the season NehNeh ), was thinking of Brundl Sports at McArthur Glen Outlet.

This was pre-COVID, preBrexit so I have no idea how his prices are these days. I expect you can get lower prices out of resort. We had to buy in resort because the old boots died on day 1. That said I would go to a specialist fitter next time, the price difference is not worth risking weeks of painful feet for me.

Any recommendations for boot fitters in Hinterglemm? My wife either needs a boot punched or a new pair of boots.

Quick question - I was previously told that some of the restaurants on the piste are cash only. Anyone got any recommendations on daily budget/cash I should bring with? I usually stick it all on card!

pretty much every night. Seriously its not that kind of resort with lots of chalets etc like you get elsewhere when staff have a night off. My experience is that everywhere is open and fully staffed 7 nights a week and there is a party atmosphere all the time if you want it.

Even in party towns there's usually one night per week that stands out as extra lively.

@Gow87, soup is around €5-8. Mains €12-15. Beer and wine ~€5.

Quite a few places take cards these days, is only the odd one which doesn't now but best take cash just in case.

find Spacey and you will find the party, think he is doing Otzi on a Wednesday and he used to have regular spots (Tues and Thurs if I recall correctly) at Spitz but don't know if he's playing there this year @tatmanstours will be able to help with that

@kb36, Spacey is no longer performing at the Spitzbub. But he’s getting plenty of work elsewhere (Ötzi Bar on Sundays and Wednesdays, the Irish Bar at the Jufa Alpenhotel on Thursdays, occasional gigs at the Saalbacherhof and Hotel Post, a couple of hotels at Hinterglemm, and cameo appearances at the Hinterhag Alm and no doubt the Soul House - but that doesn’t get going until next week). I think it’s a fluid situation, and he doesn’t know himself where else he might be employed to do regular gigs.
He might not have the best singing voice, but he’s great at working an audience and getting a party going. And there are places that need that - two of them being the Hinterhag Alm and the Maisalm. It wouldn’t surprise me if he’s offered work at the Maisalm, as currently too many people are skiing past it. As for the Hinterhag Alm, which used to be the best après-ski venue in the whole area, and possibly one of the best in the Alps, it is in danger of being destroyed by its owner, who suffers from the delusion that she can sing. Sadly it’s a case of the emperor’s new clothes. It needs a new band, or maybe Spacey to support the resident singer (Radim), who valiantly does what he can (whilst his boss squawks and caterwauls, and imagines that she has an appreciative audience).

@radar, what a beautiful start to my day in the home office

Looking at some forecasts at the end of the week, appears more snow due up top, but temps at valley level still ‘warm’ and rain due, fingers crossed that doesn’t pan out and it continues down below

@tatmanstours, disappointing Spacey not in Spitzbub this year. Are they having no live act or turning to something different?

Hope he appears in Soul House, love the atmosphere when the crazy guitarist/singer (swede?) and band are playing there, believe Spacey had it rocking also when he played last year

you should look at webcams rather than some chart. Can see it is snowing resort level & not raining.

@ribblevalleyblue, the owner, Mike, may think that he can fill the place without Spacey. I don’t know his reasoning. There’s no sign of any other live act. Mike may come to regret it later in the season if people are flocking to other bars and après-ski venues where the music is live. My own prediction is that the Soul House will be the place to go, as it was last season. It hasn’t yet got going, but Spacey tells me that Peter Thederan and his Swedish band have been signed up for the early evening après-ski, but have declined to perform in Castello in the late evening - apparently Peter felt it was too much. I think the Soul House may be kicking off this weekend.

Weather update: it’s snowing nicely - heavily at times - and is very murky outside. The temperature is currently -1, and is forecast to remain so (and for it to continue snowing) until late afternoon, and then to drop to -9 overnight.
I note also that the expected high temperatures over the next few days are being revised downwards, the maximum now being 3 degrees. I’m pretty optimistic that seasonable weather has now finally arrived. It’s predicted to be a snowy 10 days ahead with lows well into minus figures every night, and becoming colder with highs hovering around zero as the week wears on.

@Gored, I spend every day looking at the webcams, if you read my post I referred to forecasts later in the week, whilst Saalbach is a fantastic place, I am not sure even they can provide me with a webcam to look at the future

Even a chart a week away cannot look into the future. It can give an indication, but there is a huge amount of unpredictability. Just ask Michael Fish

@tatmanstours, I can understand why Peter may think a follow up at Castello after the soul house apres is too much, I recall watching him down a bottle of neat Jack Daniels whilst performing at soul house apres, we followed him to castello later and it’s fair to say he was struggling!
